GH4 GH4 V-log?

It looks like they didn't expose for the highlights, so yes something like zebras would be useful to know what's going to burn out.

Something I would love to see, is a high/low viewing option like employed on the Sony F65. Once engaged it allows you to better judge your exposure when shooting log.

The A7r II doesn't have false colour on it's LCD internally no. I take it you'v mistaken it with the simultanuously announced 5" field monitor with False colour that was mentioned in the A7r II PR?

I'd love to see false colour on our cameras. ML does it with the 2009 550D so why not.

Hi Ebrahim,

…
-I am now using a GH4 for nature, landscape, real estate, drone work, for anything where extreme resolution will impress the client, and I am using Nikon DSLRs for everything else, the D810 got me hooked, can't find a better image for shooting narrative/music video stuff. So lively, so organic and so filmic.
…

That the Nikon D810 video looks "so lively, so organic and so filmic" compared to GH4; is it due to specific technical parameters that you can pinpoint, or is it inexplicable feeling, or both?

Also, how would you compare the video quality of the Nikon D5300 (which I can afford) to that of the D810?

Ponder while we WAIT...

IF Pann decided to charge for this log update, wouldn't that add considerable hassle of virtual paperwork in their business to track, log, bill, and maintain downloads for all the consumers? Do they do this already for pro cameras? Seems to me it would be easier and better for their reputation to just give it away with firmware.

Which is why I think it will be free - especially since it's taking so long to release. Wouldn't make sense now to charge for it since newer cameras in this range are becoming available with similar tech.

Here's a quote from TheCameraStore youtube video... 15:20 - "The V-Log really responds well to Arri Alexa LUTs. It seems to be a very similar curve, very similar color..."

Nice!

Not really. It's like ordering anything online.

TCS fellas say it will be a free firmware upgrade. Let's hope they are correct (and I am sure they have the inside info)

I hate to be "that guy" but I played the TCS video section part over and over, where they said that.... what I heard is "THEY" got it free and are enjoying it. Not "Everyone" will get it free. I actually re-listened over and over to that one line trying to determine if WE were getting it free... I don't think he said it like that. :) Or I am over ANALyzing it

I asked Jordan about this in the comments on youtube - he said that he couldn't give a definitive answer because he doesn't work for Panasonic, BUT the impression he is getting from them is that it will be free and released for the GH4. He thinks the idea is to prolong the lifespan of the GH4 because the GH5 isn't going to arrive until well into 2016.

GH4 came out in numbers in April, 2014. Then, if you count for a 18-24 month product cycle ...

Its price has been lowered recently to $1,500 and, on B&H Hit Parade, it's no longer in first place among the mirrorless, yielding its spot to A7RII, but it's only down a slot. I reckon they'll ride GH4 into the 2016. For which, they will need a V-Log.

I really can't imagine how they could release a compelling GH5 before 2016. The GH4 packs so much in Panasonic haven't really left themselves much room to improve within the MFT remit (sensor size, body size, lens availability).
5-axis stabilisation would be big. Another stop of dynamic range might be possible. Slightly improved low light I suppose. 10-bit internal prores? (very doubtful but would be amazing). Obviously V-log would be a draw for the GH5 if it didn't get to the GH4. Perhaps new processor allowing improved HD/slowmo with full-pixel readout.

If they wanted to really go wild - an 8MP sensor! (MFT version of the A7S). That would be HUGE. Not as a stills camera though ...

Since GH4 is still a hybrid - and these topics has been brought up in various forms during the AF-100/200 discussions - they could/should offer a BSI sensor with an improved low light performance (there's also sensor technology with "white/see-through" pixels serving the same purpose), 20-22 MPX for better stills, ~ 13-15 MPX oversampled 4K, HEVC @ 120-150 Mbps with 10-bit internal recording, 5-Axis image stabilization, V-Log, etc. When GH4 came out, it smashed the "bang-for-the-buck" parameters. It'd be nice if GH5 did the same.

PS. This would be a departure for Panasonic but it's also a product map that has been bandied about with Fuji, Pentax and other manufacturers and that is to offer a larger APS-C/s35 or even a full frame sensor camera. Unlike those others, the company does have a fully working s35 sensor in its top of the pro line Varicam, so the technology isn't all that foreign to it.
