GH4 GH4 V-log?

If Blackmagic makes a "Pocket Mark II", with the same sensor but with the added ability to shoot at higher-frame-rates (I'd be happy with 48/50FPS), then Panasonic can keep the firmware and all this corny secrecy and hesitation. Ha.

Right, Blackmagic announces everything. We know what's coming.

Wonderful!

And then we have to wait. And wait, and wait, and ........ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :)

True. They suck pretty bad with their product launches.

I was a victim of the 2.5K BMCC. I waited 13 months for mine. Finally got it, then 4 weeks later they dropped the price by $1000. Was a really s**t experience.

The BMPCC redeemed my love for the companies products. But don't think anything will redeem my opinion of their product distribution. Hopefully the mistakes of the past has taught them something.

Has anyone here tried the 12-35 Panasonic on the BMPCC? Does the stabiliser/AF work well/at all?

Edmund

Yo.

I have. I own the Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 + 0.58x BMPCC SpeedBooster for my BMPCC.

I don't find that I need stabilisation between 12-35mm, however it does work rather well. The AF not so much. I never use the AF at all. Just double-tap the focus button and you get peaking. Blackmagic's peaking is the best I've ever used. Ever. One thing I've noticed with its stabilisation, and the stabilisation in every other lens (except the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 - best stabilisation I've used/seen) is that it has this sort of "floating" feel about it. Kind of like when you do software stabilisation - how the centre is stabilised but the edges of the image kind of "float"/gravitate around the centre? Not sure I made much sense, haha...

Just came across this in Andrew Reid's latest article: http://www.eoshd.com/2015/03/dp-review-gold-for-sony-a7s-read-my-filmmakers-perspective-on-page-8/

"The camera landscape is rapidly shifting at the moment, but everything I said about the a7S still holds true. Mine has been a good investment so far, the images I’ve made with it will stay with me for a long time. However I have a feeling the Panasonic GH4 could be making a resurgence if what I here about the next firmware update is true. A big resurgence!"

This curiosity is killing me...

Yep...Saw that too...Just my opinion...but the way forward for Panasonic is probably to make at least part of the firmware open source, so others can write apps for it.
If they dont do this, they run the risk of being eaten up by Samsung, the whole totally inhouse development thing is becoming very dated.

The thing with the GH4 is that

1. The GH4 is dirt cheap, to make and to sell - few mechanics to adjust or break.
2. It is made by a company, Panasonic, that likes making dirt cheap things (Blackmagic uses the BMPC to suck them in)
3. Each GH4 made makes it even cheaper to make.
4. The lenses make good money for Panasonic, so it makes sense to keep selling the same body cheaply.
At the moment it looks like the GH4 is becoming the loss-leader to get people into Panasonic's 4/3 system. If the sales are really good management may reinvest in that midlife upgrade, and we might get a camera that becomes fun rather than just useful.

i think the next firmware will tackle the noise issues a lot of users have had. that seems to be the top 'deal breaker' for a lot of people it seems, a lot of people are jumping to over cameras because of it.

Funny thing that...I have had mine for about 7 months, used it heaps, never had a real problem with noise...unless it was really underexposed in very low light
I have even shot night shots with the 12-35 2.8 at outdoor carnivals...and it looked great.
I realize some have had problems...and its real...but I have never really had any.
Mind you I welcome anything Panansonic can do in firmware to make the camera better...thats for sure.

Raw at 1080p at slow bitrate could be possible i guess. Anyhow I am curious what it is and more when we will get it.
They are prob waiting for NAB

Every video I've ever seen showing off or demonstrating the OIS from the 12-35 2.8 looks terrible, mainly for the reason you just described. Also because the image still jitters and shakes, albeit slightly dampened. Same with the 35-100. I know many are happy with these lenses, but I just can't bring myself to purchase them for video work.

Different batches of sensors can be very different in their noisiness.

Same here. I started learning how to color correct and grade properly, and there are some tricks to reduce the appearance of digital noise without the use of any de-noiser products. There is more than one reason teal-orange is so popular.

The last firmware update completely eliminated all jitter for the 12-35mm f/2.8 lens for me, and made this my favorite lens for handheld work. ( the 35-100mm f/2.8 lens still has issues )

Dirt cheap was an understatement for me, just picked up a used gh4 in great condition for an even grand!

but i am having one odd issue: no autofocus in any 24p mode. can't figure it out!

Do you have a link to a comparison?

No, sorry. I did not shoot any before and after footage. Before the last firmware update I was becoming pretty pissed with the OIS, to the point that I would no longer use it off a tripod.

Make sure that any footage you use to evaluate this lens has the last update, which I think is 1.2. ( I am on location right now and can't check )

If allowed to dream a little - V-log alone is awesome but didn't Panasonic license the Prores codec from Atomos for the Varicam? Here's hoping they may send it downward!!!! V-log to 8 bit would be smashing but Andrew of EOSHD keeps hinting at glowing things about the upcoming firmware. V-log itself doesn't equate to the enthusiasm and hyperbole he is using me thinks. So I am dreaming of V-log to Prores. ............please........please.....V-log to 10 bit.....please
