GH4 GH4 V-log?

LOG with 8 bit works fine with many cameras including Canon C100, C300 and Sony a7s...
Can't wait to get proper skintones out of this camera :)

It's a fallacy to think you need log to get good skin tones out of this camera.

+1

I've had no problems with the four camera profiles I shoot with, including Cine-D. ( I do use a digital color-meter when I shoot, and I always color correct and grade in post )

Me too - I use a Minolta colormeter II. I would say that with the arrival of my ninja, it's getting less use though. Apart from being able to shoot 422 10bit images, it's my first real pro monitor. What I see on this screen is what I get in the edit bay. Makes me wonder what I did before.

I am currently using an $800 Marshall monitor that is pretty good overall, but it still mucks up certain blues and purples that look nothing like the image being recorded. ( the GH4 LCD is a lot more accurate with these colors )

oh Mr Bill,
you are right! I don't think I would shoot anything with this camera without using my Ninja Blade. A lot of tools on that monitor that make my shooting way more positive!!

@TheDingo - if you've never seen the screen on the Ninja Blade, then I suggest going into your local dealer to check one out. It's a 5'' screen, but I'm finding it big enough, plus I haven't seen any of the color aberrations you describe on your Marshall. The only thing it doesn't do is provide a punch-in focus assist, but then I can still do that with the camera. I'd pay the money for this if it was just a monitor - the fact that I can record to 422 color space and do that in 10bits as well is blowing my little pea-sized brain. Great bit of kit.

Can't see what shooting V-log on the GH4 will get you other than destroying the color data and a lot of extra work in post. But hey seems like everyone is screaming for it so to each their own.

Potentially greater dynamic range and better contrast control, but I expect it's going to take some work to figure out the best way to expose and process it properly in post.

@The Dingo - no 1-1 pixel support afaik. They do respond to feature requests for firmware upgrades via their forum, so we live in hope. As far as v-log goes, Panasonic will have to begin releasing luts, like Canon and others do. Whether Atomos will incorporate their use on any models lower than the Shogun remains to be seen.

There are new firmware update rumors floating round the japanese sites. I hope Panasonic will improve the styles and codecs a bit to compete with the NX1, before it gears up for the GH5 release - the GH4 is clearly a cash cow that has exceeded sales expectations and each camera sold is now pure profit. If its capabilities can be perfected by firmware, the model life might be prolonged a bit. But if it falls behind in perceived abilities, Panasonic will be forced to cut prices.

I would love a freely editable tone curve instead of this highlight-shadow nonsense, and RAW, please RAW.

Edmund

You ain't gonna get RAW in 4K mode, UHS-I just ain't got the bandwidth. But I'd sure love to see 4:2:2 saved internally or 4K at a higher data rate. Do you have any links to the Japanese rumour sites? V-Log most definitely calling my name!

You'll see, and I have a feeling you will be a big proponent for the benefits of V-log after you see the results for yourself.

The release date rumor from a couple pages back is false.

Is the V-Log basically the same as Sony S-Log2 or the Canon Log profiles, I mean are there any advantages, disadvantages as compared to these other Log Profiles?
Also is there much of an advantage in dynamic range?

@edmund - I'm surprised that one wasn't released on April Fools day. Why on earth be so fixated on a new camera release when you can make great images with the thing you have in your hand? Maybe you should have bought a BMCC
