GH4 GH4 V-Log FREE !!

That is patently false. I know of no terms of use or other contract that users are violating by using publicly available features of publicly available hardware/software. This did not even require a hack. This is how Panasonic delivered the product. The onus is on the manufacturer to protect a feature that they want to limit. If i bought a car that was supposed to be limited to 100HP, but Ford forgot to put on the limiter and I got 150HP, is it my responsibility to not use the extra horsepower? Nay. I say this as a paying customer, and someone who accepts that Panasonic has every right to charge for this feature. They screwed-up. This is actually the last link in a long line of screw-ups with this feature. It's almost karmic.
Couldn't agree more.

Those pink magenta "macroblocking" has been discussed also in the fb forums. What ISO settings is this?
Leaving the NR at 0 instead of -5 mitigates the issue a bit. The higher the ISO, the more noticeable the issue, which also seems to indicate it is a compression artifact. (more noise, harder to compress.)

Sorry, but we will have to agree to disagree.
Inagine this, you are a new owner of a GH4 and you know nothing about the vlog paid upgrade. You scroll (in the app) through the picture profiles and you see vlog. Will you write to Panasonic to ask them to send you an invoice?

thats a bit different than people openly sharing information on how to rip off Panasonic. If you find it by accident then fine you did, yay for you. If you share steps on how to rip off Panasonic that is wrong.

Not only is that illegal but its immoral and a slap in the face to the hard work that went into developing V-log. Panasonic doesn't owe anybody on here anything. They developed the GH4 with X,Y and Z features. Features that made all of you go gaga over the GH4 and rush out to buy one. Now that GH4 owners are getting "bored" with the camera they think Panasonic owes them something. Panasonic delivered the exact product they promised when people bought it. No more and no less.

Panasonic could have kept V-log for the GH5 yet they decided to allow it to be used with the GH4. Anybody who thinks the development of V-log for a camera not designed to ever work with it is an easy and free task has no idea how hard it is to develop software. Particularly software to work on a hardware device never designed to use such a function.

Why do people on here feel so entitled that they think Panasonic owes them something? Owes you for what? Did Panasonic promise you that someday the GH4 would have V-log? A rumor floating around from an early beta tester is not the same as an official word the day the camera was launched that someday Panasonic would fill a gap and add in V-log. Most of you didn't even know V-log existed when you bought the GH4.

And yes Panasonic could easily kill the unofficial V-log with a firmware update. Since the firmware overwrites the entire software of the camera any unlicensed V-log will be wiped away. Granted people could just choose to never update their firmware and that is their choice but do you really want to limit future updates to your camera just to save $99.00? There is also no guarantee the illegitimate version of V-log people are now installing is even finished or fully optimized or if it could in fact even cause damage to the camera. Hacking is done at your own risk and I think its silly to brick a camera just to save $99.00 or use a half implemented V-log to save a few bucks while the legit people could be using a better implementation of V-log.

Thats not a good example because Ford doesn't charge an upgrade fee to unlock the 150HP mode. If a feature is designed to be a purchased item then you are in fact using it without paying for it as the company intended.

If you download a piece of software that has an unlock key to unlock the full version and somebody adds a unlock code to dropbox you are in fact breaking the law. The person adding the unlock code and the steps to unlock the software for free are breaking the law and the users who download the instructions are breaking the law. A lot of times software piracy doesn't involve a pimple faced geek hacking the software but just sharing an unlock code and steps to unlock software for free. Just because a particular piece of software left gaping holes to be unlocked that easily doesn't give a free license to people to use it for free.

Here is another example. Lets say you download Adobe Creative cloud to use the 30 day trial and wipe your computer every 30 days so you can download the trial again. Technically thats a pretty simple hack yet its still considered illegal since you are not paying for the software. You might think you are clever for finding a loophole but being clever does not trump copyright law. If it did hacking would be fair game since most software hacks are just clever little loopholes.

Who said that Panasonic owes us something?
Not every GH4 owner are active on forums (like DVXuser). Some are not aware of the paid upgrade...some don't even know about v-log. Are they stealing from Panasonic if they use v-log through the app?
Panasonic screwed up...that's it!

I never said anybody hacked anything. But people are posting instructions on how to get V-log for free and even creating links to get it in case Panasonic removes it. That is a form of hacking. Sharing a method to use a piece of software for thousands to use for free that is intended for purchase is a form of hacking and illegal. Sure people could have figured it out on their own. Then again people could have figured out how to wipe their computer every 30 days to install Creative cloud for free or discover that changing a few digits in an unlock code for a trial version of a piece of software would allow thousands to use that software for free.

Just because no actual programming was involved doesn't mean the end results are not the same to Panasonic. Its still a loss of revenue for a company that spent months developing a new piece of software for the camera that they have already pretty much made all the profit on that they are going to make.

Why is V-Log on the GH4 being looked on by many as the holly grail? Seems like a whole lot of work in post. I like the "baked in" image I get using the profile settings. Just a little white balance or curves tweak in post and good to go.

Panasonic V-Log Announcement

Panasonic V-Log Announcement

Just in from Panasonic:

Many thanks to those who have recently purchased the LUMIX GH4 V-Log L upgrade.

We are aware of an oversight in our Panasonic Image App which allows enabling of V-Log L as a “custom” setting without purchase.

This was not our intent, and our apologies for the oversight.

We appreciate the many messages of support for the continuing development of innovative new products and features, and Panasonic intends to stand behind your investment in V-Log L and the LUMIX GH4.

Therefore, it’s important to know that future LUMIX GH4 firmware upgrades, including mobile app upgrade pushes, will disable unlicensed activations of V-Log L. In addition, it’s Panasonic’s service policy to upgrade firmware during warranty claims, thereby eliminating unlicensed features.

Thank you again for your continued support of Panasonic and the LUMIX G camera system and innovations yet to come.

I got Vlog by the image app...for me it's a stop gap until I can pay n get the 2.4 firmware...more interesting to me is the hint of things to come....I wish they could improve the Image app to a more video friendly setup...waveform and full screen monitoring would be nice.

I've tested internal vrs external 10Bit.
Just applying Pannys Varicam LUT and Alexa LUT.
4k timelines and out to 4k master and 1080 master

Internal is garbage. Most smooth greys show this magenta pink garbage. Useless.
10Bit is what the VLOG is for. Works fine. No magenta or pink. Still bands though in certain situations.

Do this. Film a candle in a glass like this. Internal and external. then you will see why the internal is not holding up well.

hi Dusty would you post a comparison of the 10bit V 8bit footage?

Interesting that you chose to use the word patently, because that is the issue. A patent is a license. Legally, you need the license to use Vlog commercially. It's not theft to possess it because it was mistakenly made availiable, but, licenses for it were not. Which is why Panasonic can and will disable it if you send your camera in for repair. This is very plain and simple.

That hole in mobile app can actually do more good then harm to Panasonic. People will try it out, get used to it and when app or firmware will be updated or will get tired of it's limitations (zebra etc.) will eventually buy it.
