GH4 GH4 - External 10bit 422 for greenscreen?

Hi everyone,
I've been using the GH4 for awhile and considering to buy an Ninja Flame to record externally. One of the main reason behind this is for flexibility in post, including chroma key. Has anyone used this set up for this purpose yet and what do you think about the performance. How much of a difference does it makes over internal codec. Would anyone mind sharing some footage? Thank you very much.

Yes, i've heard that V-Log is great with 10bit images. Have you tried chroma keying with it or just everyday filming?

I'm using the GH4 and YAGH outputting 4 BNC cables to an Odyssey 7Q for some very nice UHD green screens. Works very well for me!

I just used a GH4 and Atomos Assassin 4k 10-bit 422, and it keyed like a dream. In FCP X, I just dropped the keyer that comes with FCP on and boom perfect key. No tweaking at all. I recorded ProRes HQ, so I'd say it works freakin great for green screen.

Thanks for all the answers guys! I am very appreciated. It would be awesome if you would send me some of your green screen footage to test out before making the purchase.

The GH4 still output 8 bit with the other two leading bits are all 0 - so even though people said 10 bits, it is still 8 bit of data output.

Please don't state false information as if it is a fact. It is very well known that the GH4 is true 10bits. Lots of studies and tests to back this up. Just look at any v-log users who have used 10bit and the difference is night and day. The GH4 without any doubt at all outputs 10bit via HDMI.

If you are in no rush... just wait for the GH5 which will offer 10bit internal for less than (or similar, I expect) the cost of a GH4 + 4K recorder.

Panasonic has won the game of camera wars.

Panasonic was first mirrorless/DSLR with 10bit external before anybody else, now it looks like Panasonic will be first with 10bit internal before anyone else had even caught up and offered 10bit external aside from Panasonic!!

That is not correct. It records true 10-bit 4:2:2 over HDMI. Maybe you didn't enable the 10-bit function correctly.

Will this external recorder be obsolete if the GH5 has internal 422? Does it supercharge the GH4 substantially enough to warrant being a great b cam to use with the gh5?

External Recorders are fast becoming the answer for getting the most out of your camera investment. Our PIX-E5 has elevated both our DVX200 and GH4 cameras into 422, 8 and 10bit winners. Regardless of 8 or 10bit recording it’s very likely we’ll always use our PIX-E5 for 422 Pro Res HQ on the speed drive and HD H264 on the SD Card. I can see this as standard operating procedure for almost everything we do, it will squeeze the most out of the cameras we have and give us the option of 10bit recording. https://youtu.be/HAKf-ne09ow

I've heard that the PIX-E5 is very hot when recording. Some even said that it is impossible to touch when filming. Is it what you have been through as well?

Are you gonna trade up to 4k version or does Ninja 2 perform well enough not to worry about it?
Kinda in a holding pattern until the GH5 announcement. Depends on the GH5 price, if it had 10-bit/4:2:2 internal and it's less than $2K I'll be really torn. Add a 4K recorder for $1000 and lose IBIS, extra weight and no crop 4K, or sell the GH4 for $750-800 and spend another $1000 on the GH5.

Sounds like I answered my own question, but false color is simply a must have shooting V-Log.

DecIsions, decisions

Its all aluminum enclosure does get quite warm but it's not causing a problem as far as I’m concerned.

Nothing wrong with waiting on the GH5 if you can. I'll also say that I have zero problems keying footage from the GH4 shot internally.
