GH4 GH4 ‘M-Log’ Field Test - Devil's Peak, Hong Kong

A new combination for the cameras Cine Like D from Matt Mosher, and called M-Log by himself.

I took some long shoots of the Landscape in Hong Kong from Devil's Peak Hill.

The tuned picture profile is flat and pick up more detail from the shadow compare to record in Rec709 or Standard. The shoot was pretty long but viewers can notice more detail of the city.

How is "m-log" not color correction/grading?

Furthermore, how is "supertone" not just adjusting settings?

I will now declare that setting SHARP at ZERO is called "G-Sharp"! :D It is a special setting the makes your images look well defined, with more realistic resolutions, closer to real life. The science behind it is that setting sharp to -5 has been proven to add blur rather than show what the sensor can display in its nature state (around -3), thus negating the best functionality of the subpixels.

Master Pedestal set to +10 is not a good idea. I tried that and it just added noise. I found that most of the tweaking on the GH4 results in more noise to a camera that is already pretty noisy at ISO 800 and above so I just keep it simple. YMMV.

Cinelike V with lower saturation, noise reduction and sharpening looks pretty good and seems pretty clean. Any curve adjustments ruin skin. Smooths them out and adds noise. The issue will get worse as you start to grade. Every time you add a filter or adjust color it degrades the image. You want to have the cleanest image possible to get the most when grading.

Keep it simple and the GH4 will shine.

The purpose of M-LOG was to be able to match the GH4 with other cameras. Read the post. It wasn't designed for al around best settings. Here is a quote from the article.

"When using M-log, your exposure needs to be very carefully judged to avoid highlight clipping. You will need to watch for underexposure as well. Underexposure in M-Log is, however, less noisy than some other looks that have been posted in the Internet. But, you will still need to pay attention when grading to pull out color noise and to obtain clean blacks.

My intention in giving this look away is to help others in the same situation. If you are shooting with a mix of cameras and formats you will get good color match and dynamic range also long as those cameras are shooting in log and LUT modes."

I don't agree on this statement since I've matched cameras in the past without all this.

I did a blog post a while back and tried lots of settings. Since then I just dialed it all back and i'm happy for now but Vlog L will be out and all this will be done with.
