GH3 GH3 WiFi Features - explanation?

It seems clear now, that you will be able to stream video footage from the GH3 as it is shot onto iOS/Android devices. This can potentially be huge. So huge I think there should be a separate subforum on the GH3 forum dedicated just to that. The reason being, that for sure there will be a ton of apps that can be developed to augment the GH3 on a tablet and it will be like putting rocket afterburners onto the camera - just incredible possibilities. I am of course assuming that Panasonic is wise enough to release the SDK for app development. I can see this being useful not just for a director to monitor, but for a DP or operator who could use all sorts of apps directly, if one could implement two way communication camera-tablet to control the GH3 with the tablet.

But before we even get there, I wonder if it would be possible to use a tablet exactly like a monitor - you could attach it to the cam for the operator - assuming that you can calibrate the tablet for color accuracy and have apps developed where you can implement monitor functions such as peaking etc. - what would be involved technically? Could it potentially be possible to use an iPad instead of a DP6?

They have already stated they won't releasing an SDK and people will have to reverse engineer the iOS/Android apps they release.

As for functionality, I am guessing it will be similar to what you can do with a Canon camera, or maybe what you can do from the camera interface.

Focus peaking would be possible, IMO. I hope that the Full Area Focus/touch capability is extendable to the tablet/phone apps.

I totally agree with you. The potential is huge for affordable high res monitors that also deliver
all kinds of enhanced functionality beyond what the camera itself offers. I believe that
whichever vendor embraces this modular/open source approach is going to start a
revolutionary blossoming of creative solutions.

It doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't release an SDK. Unless they just don't want to spend the time/money to do so. Which is a poor excuse. The only excuse I'll accept is if they feel like the camera can be bricked in some way because of it. Otherwise something like this could really help sell their cameras. I mean imagine the possibilities of being able to use a variety of apps. You could trigger multiple cameras at once, remote monitor, control aperture, shutter, ISO, focus, zoom, flash, video start/stop, frames rates, etc. It's endless. It would be a second GH revolution right next to the hacking ability.

I am on the fence as to whether I want to keep hacked GH2 and go for the GH3. Having audio out, nicer LCD and 1080/60p would be nice but normally use separate audio, am alright (not thrilled) with the current monitor and and wouldn't use slow-motion too much.

Now if we were able to use a tablet to stream HD video wirelessly like a monitor, that would be MAJOR and I would make the investment. Would love to know if this possible as I could use my Nexus 7 as an HD 1280x800 monitor for focusing and it only costs $200!

I'd be thrilled to be wrong, but imagine even IF the monitoring feature is available, latency could be an issue for many applications.

Yes. I jumped on this on day one and it does indeed look like my hopes are being realized. Just one problem. The GH3 may not be up to our expectations quality-wise so it really will be moot unless Panasonic gives a camera worth using in remote monitor mode. In theory, the convergence predictions are materializing for all cameras and you can bet hat some day, we'll be able to stream the video to our HUD displays!!!

To me it seems like something that sounds good in the specs and would have virtually zero utility in the real world.
Why do you say that?
Here are some real world domains that I've been operating in that would benefit greatly from remote monitoring:

• Surveillance
• Nature Photo/Video
• Hazardous environment
• Boom/crane mounted cameras
• Vehicle mounted
• Adventure Sports sequences
.... you get the idea ;)

New hands on video. I don't speak German, so I didn't pick up much more than what's obvious and the tech English words that he uses.

For me, it's still not 100% confirmation that it works with video monitoring or for video playback. It looks like he's just in photo mode in the video. If someone speaks German and can tell me if he said otherwise, please do. I guess I'm pretty darn sure that it does work for video monitoring, it's just not confirmation yet.

Edit: The same guy has an English version of the video. He says that there will be a video button above the camera (photo) button, but that it's just not in the app yet. So it looks like there's just the one remote monitoring interface on the app, no matter if you're doing video or photos. Here it is:

The real question is "Can you capture the live view on your phone and wirelessly stream it to youtube". That would be a dream come true for streaming live sporting events even if it is only in 480p. This will be the first thing I try to accomplish when I get my GH3.

I have a feeling Eye-Fi will go out of business if wireless makes it into a lot of cameras soon.

I mentioned this in another post, but it was buried in the middle of a long thread. I think that there will be live monitoring, but because it's wireless there will be a lag, so will probably not be good enough for the camera operator. Looking at the teradek cube, which is a dedicated, over $1,000 box to do this kind of thing, they claim to have a 1/4 second lag. So I would imagine that's the best you can hope for, unless Panasonic pulls off some magic. So this will probably be good for other uses instead, like video village (or removing the need for one), monitoring by other crew, and other uses that have already been mentioned by others. Check the teradek cube page for some ideas of what may be possible, if the technology is properly utilized.

@Shenan Latency is an interesting concern. 1/4 second = 250 ms.

It would be interesting to compare that latency to http://www.try-sound.com/ where you are dealing with the latency between input from your mouse being sent via the net to a computer (which at least at launch was 9 timezones away) before being sent back as sound and coming out via your soundcard's latency.

There's no currently foreseeable way that such a process could get down to the local round-trip latency on a system, let alone output only (which can routinely get below 9ms on even very inexpensive systems and sometimes under 1ms).

- I expect the WiFi to become a bigger deal once it has been hacked, and 3rd party apps are able to communicate with the camera. ( Panasonic want to keep WiFi to themselves, which is a silly idea )
- WiFi will be great for remote camera control ( i.e. when the camera is on the end of a jib, or possibly to control multiple cameras at the same time, etc... )

...I want to find out how much aliasing and moire the GH3 has before I consider selling my GH2. If moire is there ( too early to tell right now ), then I will end up using both cameras: GH2 + GH3

I am not on the fence, my hacked GH2 is going to be returned to it's original condition and going on Craigslist, I couldn't agree with you more on the NEXUS 7, I was thinking of buying a SMALL HD or a MARSHAL, both of the monitors are half the cost of the camera body, I just wonder who is going to be first with a camera mount for it. I put both apps on my 50 dollar rebuilt Pandigital Nova tablet however one of the apps needs GPS and my tablet doesn't have it. I was on the fence about the NEXUS 7 (thinking about getting its big costly brother from Asus) , but because it is GOOGLE'S own tablet (made by ASUS) at two hundred bucks, I would call it a necessary addition to the GH3, ANDROID is open source so I can see a lot of developers putting together some really neat software for the GH3

my only other thought at the moment is QUICK, someone in the land of the rising sun, get the RUSSIAN a GH3 so he can reverse engineer it.
