GH3 GH3 vs. 5d mk III

Yep. I just downloaded the clip and I think the Gh3 is a nice camera. I have both cameras and I feel like the Gh3 is like shooting with the Mk3 but with better DR and resolution.

I'm as willing to get enthusiastic as the next guy, but Gh3 better DR and resolution than the mk3??? But hey, if I was ever hiring a publicist, you'd be on my short list :)

Do you have both cameras? I do and I'm reporting what I am seeing by my own conclusions.
Here is my public message about you as your publicist. STOP BEING A TROLL.

I have a Gh3 v Gh2 thread with star chart and color check on the GH forums.

I just set up my Mk3 and did a comparison of the Gh3 and Mk3 and on standard profile with contrast and sharpen all down on both, the cameras look quite the same with the resolution edge going to the Gh3. But they match up very very well in DR. Almost identical but with the slightest edge to the Gh3 in the highlights. The reds are a touch more saturated in the Mk3.

Thank you for this test. Next week I will order the GH3, it has now been decided.

The 5D looks also very good in this test... Better than I expected actually. But still, everytime the GH3 shot 'kicks in', there is an increase in detail and yes, dynamic range. At least to my eyes, especially the skies have much more color definition in the GH3 than in the 5D. In the 5D the skies are white on places where the GH3 still renders a cloud and blue details.

Great shots as well!

Yeah I loaded that clip into my NLE and saw that there is more headroom in the skies of that swing scene on the waveforms. THis is assuming the shooter had all settings the same between cameras though.

How much of the detail could be the lenses? I know the Canon 24-70 f2.8 is a killer lens but I'm not sure how the sharpness stacks up against the razor sharp 12-25 f2.8 Lumix.

Oldcorpse:

It looks pretty conclusive to me that the gh3 has better DR and resolution than the mk3.

You seem to believe the opposite. Would you point out some video that support your claim?

Disparaging someone for his opinion doesn't convince me of anything.

I have one (GH3) sitting in a box from B&H back in the U.S., its a little frustrating, I won't be able to lay hands on it until next month.

Is there a profile on the GH3 that matches prolost?

I'm thinking of getting one for the 60p and high detail wide shots.

I just had a play with the film convert pro demo, it has a bunch of presets for the MKII and GH2, it could be a good option for matching MKIII and GH3 footage when they update the presets. The film stock emulations look great, it takes me hours to get looks like that in magic bullet and it can output to 2k.

Interesting comparison, but unless you get the wave forms exactly the same for exposure you have no way of making a judgement. All the footage with the MK3 is using the pos standard PS and mostly underexposed which really throws off that as a proper test. I think you'll also find the MK3 does way better as the ISO goes up as well.

With that said I'm getting a GH3. It just looks good and with ETC it's the only game in town at anywhere near that price :)

Cheers,
Pete

Sorry, stupid question maybe, but what is ETC?

Extra Tele Conversion. It allows you to zoom in camera without losing any image quality. Think of it as a free tele converter.

why is Canon yellow & GH 3 not? I did a shoot with a GH2 & a 5d3 - very hard to get the colors to match any suggestions?

Why use different lenses?
That's my question as well. Putting the F0.95 Voigtlander on the GH3 immediately gives it the upper hand, so it would have been a more accurate test with an F1.4 on all the comparisons.
