GH2 Gh3 full specs now posted

Yes. Clearly, it has to be Foveon.

Oh, wait, maybe you meant Dalsa?

Or, perhaps you were thinking of Toshiba?

Or Fairchild?

Or any of who knows how many companies that make sensors?

Man, I wish people would quit spouting made-up bullcrap as if it was FACTS. Panasonic did not confirm nor deny that it was a Panasonic sensor, but that in no way leads to there being only ONE feasible option!

Maybe I have this completely wrong, but. . .the idea of Panasonic using a Sony sensor in their flagship product for the Lumix line seems a little bit of a stretch. I realize the new Olympus omd is using a Sony sensor but that's Olympus, Sony and Panasonic are Coke vs. Pepsi.

Like I say, maybe I completely misunderstand the relationship between these two companies.

I kind of feel the same way. I mean if they designed the sensor and they already have the chip fab, why wouldn't they just make it themselves? On the other hand, maybe they didn't design it, maybe they just designed the way the image is processed and it was cheaper just to buy a preexisting sensor which had already proven it's performance. Who knows.

The fact that it's not multi-aspect and that they say "no comment" about it being a Panny chip, does lead one to believe it's made by someone else. If it were Sony for instance, I would be pretty happy about that. Sony sensors have been kicking ass lately and we already know they make an m43 chip that has proven itself in the E-M5.

I know everyone bashed my comment about the only possibility being a Sony sensor. I realize it seems like a foolish thing to say with so many companies producing sensors... but I'm just calling it right now. Based on predictions of myself and even Vitaliy that the sensor is definitely Sony made. It's hard to imagine what other company could truly take on the task of developing in mass quantity the flagship sensor for the Panny stills division. Sony already does this for other companies, so it's no stretch of the imagination to think that they've lent a hand here. Finally, it looks VERY sony; no doubt there's traces of their style here. Even the way the monochromatic aliasing looks... very very sony.

Anywhoo, these are all just conjectures, and since the camera isn't even out yet... it's part of the fun. So a month or 2 from now, when we really do know who manufactured the sensor, I'll be able to go back to this post and say I predicted correctly : )

How do people think JAPAN got to become the biggest camera maker in the world? You think there is "fierce" competition between the camera companies down there? The reality is that JAPAN IS THE CAMERA COMPANY!

Has anyone here considered where the AF100's sensor is made? Do you think maybe the GH-3's sensor was made by the same company....um....Panasonic (or whoever it might be)? Why do we think it's a Sony all of a sudden when....the AF100's sensor was never a multi aspect sensor...so........??

I don't know if it's a Sony Sensor or not, but what I do know is that it still does resemble Panasonic to my eyes. Varicam, HVX200, etc. It doesn't completely look like a Sony image, or Sony motion from what I've been able to watch.

Kinda doesn't matter, really. either you want the look or you don't. xD

I don't own a GH camera so could someone please clarify for me. Is "White Set 1, 2" a manual white balance option? If not, which setting allows for manual white balance?

This needs to be the #1 question at the event. Although to be honest with insane high levels of hacking I'm finding it less important and actually more of a hassle to record externally. Even out of the box we can now get I-frame only at a somewhat higher bitrate so for most people the need to use an external recorder is sort of tossed out the window unless you really need 4:2:2. Once the GH3 is hacked 4:2:2 may be the only logical reason to want external recording.
If it's hackable to 4:2:2 I'm interested. Otherwise, I'll wait for the next version . I don't do much Chroma Key but 4:2:2 is more about post Color Grading for me.

Indeed. I've written about this extensively. Most younger westerners don't know much about the history of the Japanese (and now, pan Asian) Industrial complex. There are books out there for that ;)

It really doesnt matter to me either. But it would be something of a precedent. Coming from a broadcast background and many excursions to NAB, the idea of one of the two giants sharing core technology on a flagship model would signal to me the apocalypse. . .well maybe that is a little over the top, but I would be surprised, if true then the stills division definitely does things way different.

Well I have to say, it doesn't really matter to me either who makes the sensor, it's just an interesting fact to think about. What panasonic does with the image after it's captured is where most of the magic happens as far as I'm concerned. If anything, the only downside to a sony sensor might be a bit of softness and tincy bit of aliasing. Overall, nothing to cry about. I do think it's interesting though how amazingly innovative and aggressive Sony has become in recent years; it just kind of feels like they're taking over. Good for them though.

15. Vignetting shading compensation. How cool is this? If you have a c-mount lens or something that vignettes, the camera can automatically compensate that out so you get an even field of illumination...

Does this mean I can pull my Angenieux 12-120 f2.2 c-mount out of mothballs? Been there since the 90s but I'd like to give it another go.

Great example of Panasonic corporate marketing strategy working perfectly.

Not really. Just an example of what we know from next to all manufacturers of nearly all technical devices: Engineers sometimes don't think in user's terms.

If for instance Atomos was able to implement focus peaking and other goodies in a firmware upgrade I do not understand why the GH3 does not have it from start (okay there a bazillion arcane technical reasons I do not understand...).

But we've learned it with 25p for the GH2: First it was stated adamantly that it is impossible. Later it did come - nearly sneaking in. A lot of us from PAListan, Mr. Bloom among them, had told them from the start that we would really need that.

But: Sometimes I also do believe Japanese companies react slightly stubborn if we bang against their door and demand this or that and call them names. So let's bombard them with courteous hints rather than straight demands.

Still next to anything else about this camera seems to be absolutely good enough for me to having ordered it already.

With a faint hope mount Fujiyama may emit a cautious, cherry-blossom coloured cloudlet of firmware in, say, January ..... ;-)

So not having read the thread through yet is the Pal [Full HD] 1,920 x 1,080, 25p (sensor output is 25p, 72Mbps (ALL-Intra))the same as the GH2s BD compatable or as i fear not.
