GH3 focus peaking (ft5) !

Do we have any specific number regarding DR? That's the one area they have to improve the most. And I won't go by "wide dynamic range" or anything like that, I've heard the m43 marketeers say things like that about cameras that could barely get 10 stops in RAW stills, they probably left out "compared to a $100 point-and-shoot".
This is exactly what I'M wondering as well and why I cannot get excited over it just yet.
XLR doesn't impress me, neither does auto focus. So what does the sensor actually achieve. If it's a measly 11stops, that's not a huge improvement. Especially if the highlight rendering is the same as the last camera :-/

I wouldn't call 11 stops measely unless you already own an F3, C300 or Epic...

There isnt' a DSLR out right now netting an actual usable 11 stops. They're all limited at 10. So that's one stop better than what most people looking toward...

HOWEVER, yes, 12 would be ideal.

Have they said anywhere what the price point is "rumored" to be? If it's bigger, and weather-sealed, and has an XLR accessory, then I wouldn't be surprised at all if the price is moving up into a different bracket too. Maybe $1499? Still under half the cost of a 5D Mark III.

If there's any truth at all to these rumors, and based on conversations I've had with folks who actually do know, there is at least some truth to some of them... I will be all over this thing. An actually reliable, from-the-factory high-bitrate codec, actual audio input, etc? Could be the true, finally, low-cost large-sensor spiritual successor to the DVX100.

Still waiting to see what it really does...

I usually do work with the F3 and Red and of course now, tinkering w/ the Black Magic camera.
The point isn't what the DSLRs are doing now, but what can be or should be done tomorrow for them. Hence, if the GH3 simply does the same thing it did years ago only w/ more hardware inputs, well....not really much of an upgrade, really.

As far as the GH3 goes, 11 stops would actually be new. It's no more than nine really.
I'm feeling pretty good about what has been rumored already and what to expect. anything +11 stops and IF they can manage 422 8bit HDMI out? TOTALLY SOLD! 12 stops would be great and fingers crossed. THe stock GH2 in terms of resolution was a winner. They have had 2 years to think about this camera and a year to perfect it after the gh2 hack rolled out.
Can you imagine takeing the short comings of the Gh2 res and building on that. 1000 clean lines of res? The gh2 is sufficient enough, but another 10-15% improvement would be welcome.

Combine these with the Lumix X lenses like the 12-35 and 35-100 2.8's, then the ability to mount nearly EVERYTHING on top of that?

Give me 422 8bit out, 11+ stops, 10% improvement on sensor, and better IO and body... I would pass on the BMDC and wait for BMDC 2.0!

I'm hoping that focus peaking will available in the EVF (e.g. not just LCD) and be accessible when taking stills as this would be a definite boon to shooting with legacy (i.e. manual focus) lenses.

For me, it's going to be the rumored external App support, as in you'll be able to adjust and control everything from an iOS/Android device. Bulb ramping hopefully, as I shoot a lot of timelapse. Speaking of timelapse, have you seen timelapse.org?

Oh, and the PC control will hopefully allow for external zoom/focus control. Imagine an ENG style zoom/focus remote setup on a m4/3 camera, and you're imagine my dreams!

There are a lot of internet myth floting about the gh2 dynamic range. People should look at the gh2 raw DR from dxomark or sensorgen to see that the gh2 is about 11.4 stop. Only about half a stop from the Canon 5d mark 3. So if Panasonic wanted to put a 11 stop DR camera today they could by releasing a log flat profile in the gh2. So I think that with a little development the last 2 years with no increase in Pixel, the 12 stop and more could easily be achieved at least in photo Raw. Now with a flat picture profile most of this DR could be available in video. Now not every dslr are created equal and Sam has developed flaat profile that come close to 12 stop with the Nikon D800. and that is with the internal codec, I don't know if the uncompressed hdmi output, you could get a little bit more DR that won't have been lost in a compressed 24mbit codec.

But we're mainly concerned with video dr, right? As much as I like my gh2, its dr and highlight rolloff is poor. Seriously, is there a camera discussed on these forums that has worse dr for video?

Anyway, these rumours are so juicy it's got me second guessing a bmc purchase. Can't believe I typed that...

If it does most of what they say it will do..... then to buy this camera - if you have the budget - is a complete and utter no-brainer. Especially for everybody who already owns m4/3 glass.

High bit rate, so no need to hack, more rugged body, better DR, focus peaking and and and and...... to buy it is so logical that it can be a bit boring, yes. And with an around or slightly more expensive than 1.000 $ body-only (?) camera one can not really expect F3 or Epic features - at least on this planet. Such wonders only happen in fairy tales and political advertising.

For me personally it may be the best "go-between" for both photography and sneak- and 2nd/3rd unit video-work. Only down side is that it comes too late for my next movie to rampage through the set as the extra "picture sniffer"..... but I am extremely happy to see more development in the m4/3 system.

I can't imagine that they wouldn't improve the dynamic range (for video and stills) going from the GH2 to GH3. Especially if the rumor of the 'high dynamic range' sensor ends up being reality. Hopefully we can either manually customize or select a nice flat picture profile as a menu option to hold onto some of the dynamic range in video.

I'm thinking the same thing about the GH3 possibly being what I'll go with initially over the BMC, so don't feel bad. Especially if the GH3 also has 1080/60p and 720/120fps modes. I think (hope) that the 120 fps mode is in there, seeing as it is in a newer but cheaper consumer Panasonic stills cam (can't remember the name and model off the top of my head).

Daniel has a point: the problem with the GH2's DR in video mode is not that the sensor has too low DR, but that the in-camera image processing throws away a couple of stops (or more, depending on the settings you use). It will be good for panasonic if their new sensor is better, but what they really have to do to get decent DR in video mode is to add a flat picture profile that saves in the video stream all the DR that the sensor captures. (BTW, this is not a panasonic-specific problem, Canon and Nikon could also greatly improve their in-camera picture processing to allow for much wider DR in video mode; the D800 could easily get a couple extra stops of DR in video mode with different in-camera image processing)

I also hope that they give us the possibility like in Canon or Nikon to do our own profile, but at the base a flat log profile will be a good starter.

So the community should put some pressure on Panasonic to implement that relatively simple feature in the GH3!
