I have a GH3 gripped with a flycam 3000. I balanced out with a Oly 12-50mm kit lens to test it out. What I'm wondering is this the best lens out of what i have for flying? My plan is to use this for weddings in the future.

Here is what i have for lens:

panny 35-100 2.8
oly 12-50 3.5-5.6?
panny 20 1.7
30mm 2.8
panny 14-140

ill be buying 12-35 2.8 here shortly. ( once the bugs are out)

I was thinking 12-50 is the best bet because ill more then likely be flying at f8 or somewhere around there so i dont need a fast lens. I like the zoom fuction and the fact its weather sealed and the wideness of the 12mm.

What would you think is the best lens for fying? (im a flying nube :))

Thanks in adavanced

A lens that extends as you zoom (like the 12-35mm) means you're going to have to re-balance every time you change focal length.

I thought that. I like the camera to be slightly forward when flying (from testing) so my guess is ill have it extended and leaning forward, then when bring it close, it will be level.

At least that my plan. I dont know the weight so im not sure if it will work or not. Ill let you guys know.

I with the 12-35 was like my 35-100. life would be great!

I think it would be rare that you'd want to change the focal length while on your flycam. Especially given the hassle. You really want to stay on the wide end to help your stability anyway.

+1

I've run fly cam style on events, I keep pretty wide. You will have to rebalance I believe if you change focal length. I don't see a reason to zoom at all if you are floating around, and constantly walking.

My Tokina 11-16 doesn't extend when it zooms and I still have to adjust the fore/aft balance if I change the focal length. Remember that the heavy glass elements are still moving inside the lens when you zoom or focus, even if the lens doesn't extend.

I use the GH3 + Olympus 12mm f2.0 for steadicam work. I find f2.8 not sufficient on m43 sensor size for low light shooting so the f2.0 really helps for low light shooting like reception halls. And the autofocus is also good with the olympus 12mm lens. The steadicam cam shots in this wedding video were shot with GH2 + Olympus 12mm f2.0 and flycam nano dslr.

But I wish there was a way to get the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 lens wider and faster. Does anyone know if the new meta bones speed booster adapter will allow you to attach it to the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 allowing it to become wider and f2.0 with autofocus? I would be all over that combo if it does.

Also, for steadicam shots, more weight and wider lens both help for more stable looking shots.
