GH3 GH3 arrives in USA

Just picked up my Pre-order from Samy's/Hollywood.

And for anyone interested they're having an GH3 event tonight. Reads like they may have some kits available, but it isn't clear

“I’m hosting the first event featuring the GH3 in the United States at Samy’s Camera Los Angeles. Panasonic is bringing in NatGeo shooter Ira Block to show his recent video work and Samy’s will be showing and selling the first batch of GH3 cameras hitting our shores."

Glad this camera is finally hitting the stores.

Phillip Bloom tweeted a pic of a GH3 & GoPro 3 that were waiting for him in his hotel room when he arrived in LA earlier this week for a shoot.

Personally I'm really anxious to find out about the HDMI output. If it is a usable 8bit or 10bit 4:2:2, and / or if the HDMI stays on when you switch to ETC mode.

Oh Yeah Bern. Congrats on getting your cam. Hope you can share some footage sooner than later. I should have mine early next week. I have a good feeling that this camera is going to be quite something. I bought it to add to my Gh2 for a low profile camera system and plan on using the 12-35 and 35-100 mostly on the cameras. If I like the Gh3 enough, I will sell the Gh2 and get another Gh3. Hopefully it will get hacked but if not, no big deal. I also hope the HDMI outputs a clean recordable signal at 422/8bit.

Bern, what's the firmware version number of your GH3 ? ( I am curious to see what Panasonic are shipping with )

Mine arrives tomorrow via UPS :)

Dustylense, I read somewhere that a user reports clean hdmi output (as in image only) but currently 4:2:0

Think it was driftwood at personal preference but I'm at work and can't check.

Awesome Erik! So far the things I'm seeing from the Gh3 are great looking. Now I have to get the 35-100.

The 35-100 is a keeper! I was thinking about selling the GH2 but want to see just how much larger the GH3 is in my hand. I like how small the GH2 is and would make it the always with me camera but if it's not that different off she goes.

Gary Huff stated it's 8bit 4:2:2 out of HDMI
I really hope so. If not, won't be the end of the world. I'm gonna hold onto the Gh2 and see if the cameras can somehow match up in a few profiles. If not, bye bye gh2. What I'm seeing from the Gh3 won't warrant keeping the gh2 if there is no match. I'll just get another gh3 for 2 cam set-ups (which I might do anyway to stay consistent). Good to hear about the 35-100. My plan is to only use the Gh3's with the 12-35 and 35-100 for light 2 cam setups for interviews and such. Then, I have my eye on the C100.

@GAry. What leads you to think the Gh3 is 422 out of hdmi?

Sorry my bad. I deleted my post since it's incorrect. Gary was talking about the C100's HDMI out being 4:2:2.
I'm hoping I can feed clean audio into the camera. I know many poo poo that idea but it sure would be nice to record clean usable audio into a DSLR. I'm renting the C100 for a couple of shoots next week but decided to rent it for a full week. Its coming in on Monday. I hope I don't like it :)

Good luck with NOT liking that C100. I bet by end of next week, you'll own one. Especially for the work that you do.

I was afraid of the size increase too, but the GH3 is minimally larger than the GH2. Don't think you'll really notice, & will be thrilled by the new build. Ergonomically it's big step up from it's predecessor. Every dial, & button, is cleaner, better layed out, & more robust. It just feels more pro, & easier to use instinctively.

Haven't had any time to dive into the camera yet, but noticed it didn't allow the choice of a shutter speed below the reciprocal of the frame rate, & so fixing one flaw that sometimes ruined GH2 footage.

I was in pre-production meetings all afternoon for a 11 day trip coming up next week, & am unsure how much I'll be able to put the cam thru it's paces beforehand, but am certainly going to try. I'll at least decide the Scene Files I'll start out with, but it's rainy in LA for the next few days, & I may choose differently later.

I got my GH3 from Adorama today. I pre-ordered from them the day it was announced. Last night I received an email saying it wouldn't arrive til tomorrow and got a nice surprise from UPS today. Too bad I can't find anywhere that sells spare batteries yet.

Has anyone posted a color resolution chart shot with the GH3? I'm very curious to see what the measured resolution is, and whether there's any moire.

Spoke with a couple of Panasonic's Reps tonight. Spare batteries won't be available in the USA until December 15th.

Awhile ago I was part of round table that included a dozen or so photographers, including three from the ASC, & an ARRI rep. Supposedly it was a bit of an eye opener, & Panasonic decided to utilize almost all the suggestions. As memory serves, I think they did address most all the requests, though some (especially peaking) are hopefully still coming via future firmware.

If this is true Panasonic should be commended. They should be either way.

I'm sure DVXusers could come up with even better suggestions, & Panasonic should figure a way to properely mine it. Perhaps Polls would whittle down which features to prioritize.
