GH2 GH2vk Unleashed

Yes, motion and also postproduction/grading. The higher I-frame bitrate should - technically - improve static shots too, but the codec was already great for static scenes before so you won't see much of a difference at first.

EDIT: That is for 1080p24, all other modes significantely benefit from the hack in static scenes as well

Yes - we can talk about the poor picture and beautiful. Vitaliy spoke of a photo-BQ for his announcements at 3.61D. No, I say!

It seems to me just before so he would have with the 3.61D the excellent 1080/24pN eliminated. . . and one would now 1080/60i with high MBit. . .

Not quite following you can you clarify this a bit?

My 2cents...
He's basing this off of a comparison footage in a different topic in this GH2 forum. Hunt it down. You'll see it.
I disagree since his comparison is between the GH1 and GH2, not to mention the exposures and settings (ISO) were "probably" different. (Unless he stated it in the audio--still different exposure)
Also, the comparison should be done between GH2 and GH2VK. And most importart, if you're seeing more noise in GH2VK, it's due to you are ACTUALLY seeing more detail that would normally be smeared due to the lower bit rate less opimized compression. So far from what I've seen, this is going to make the GH2 one heck of a camera. good luck finding one in a couple weeks! LOL

Thanks Steve. I did find that footage after I read the post so it made a bit more sense. Luckily I have a Gh2 already and 3 more at work lol. So I am stockpiled. I haven't tried the hack yet. I am interested in the 30ish mb hacks but will wait to it is a little more mature before I start hacking.

The stabilized motion is stunning. There is now a filmic, photographic clarity to the motion, every single detail preserved. (I also use half GOP in addition to 42)

Hey Sage - by half do you mean GOP=6? Just wanted to make sure. Great looking results, I'm about to try it with 42/6.

Reduce the bitrate to 32 mbit and you won´t get "blips"

Sort of defeats the purpose of hacking to get high/stable bitrates. I like the visual IQ I'm getting @ 46mbps...but the start-blips are unpleasant. Has anyone noticed if changing GOP has any effect on the start-up problem?

Motion tests are done uploading:
160 ISO
f5.6-8 Split
1/50 shutter
28mm
Cinema Mode, everything -2

The most significant area to see a difference between the hacked and unhacked clips are just when the image motion is beginning to come to a stop, or just when it's beginning to move.

My wife and I watched these repeatedly this morning, and could not really notice a difference. We did both comment repeatedly about the beginning "blips". Not worth the cost in disk space for my usage so far for minute negligible improvement. Now 720p, 1080i, et al I can see the point.

No hack for this guy yet.

32mb fotage from GH2 is superb...its not all about bitrates.
GH1 had to have higher bitrates and GOP fiddling to fix the poor codec out of the box.
GH2s 24h mode has none of this problem. Only other modes will probably benefit from a boost.

To me a second of blips is not a big deal. I am not sure if I ever had to use a footage as soon as I started recording.

Just curious, is proper playback in camera important to you? I think the real question here should be "Is 42 really better than 32". Just because it is showing a higher bit rate doesn't mean it is actually better. How those bits are dispersed is far more important than overall max bit rate or even average bit rate.

What we need is for the I,P, and B frames to peak when needed and to retreat when not needed. I am not convinced that it is doing that when you set the bit rates to 42000000. I have a metronome coming today to figure it out though.

Yes. And I have no issue playing it back in camera properly except for the first second of blips. It plays the rest of the footage fine.

I agree. I never said 42 is better than 32. I simply stated the first second of blips on each footage is not a big deal to me and therefore, I am okay with 42 since everyone seems to safely assume 42 is either better than or equal to 32, but not wore than 32.

If 42 turns out to be not better than 32, there's no reason to insist on 42.

For others its important...documentary work much?
If it is important to you, it is important to you. When I do documentary type works, I usually start recording a bit earlier with anticipation that something may happen. If I start recording when something starts happening, I am already a bit late. BUT THAT'S JUST ME.

Anyways this thread is about GH2vk, so LET'S GET BACK TO THE MAIN TOPIC. :)

Gosh, I got dizzy watching this fast movement. I`ve watched it in players, in a PP CS5 timeline (the clips above each other) and I couldn´t perceive any difference. Maybe I have to do it several times more - but afterwards a doctor is needed...

I think the difference is very subtle, and really only worth it if you want to squeeze the absolute best out of your camera. I think you have to go frame by frame to see any noticeable difference in ungraded footage. The hack does remove the macroblocking and muddy shadows of the original codec implementation, but most viewers would never be able to spot the difference - especially on ungraded footage; just like most viewers won't see the difference between AVCHD from the AF100 vs a recording from it's SDI-out.

However, if you know you want to grade your footage, I would heartily recommend using the GH2vk hack. It's hard to have too much codec information if you're going to do any moderate or heavy post work.

ps - I sincerely regret any vertigo or nausea that my footage may have caused you! Hope you're feeling better! ;)
