GH2 GH2-X v3 "THIRTY" (Quantum 7 + P-frame 720p Patch for 30MB/s)

Good grief. I'm really glad there is so much experimenting being done with patches and updates. But it's really starting to make my head hurt.

Doesn't mean I won't use them. I'll just have to take some aspirin first.

Thanks Sage :)
appreciate the effort to put the video.
looks very promising indeed!

can you please shed some light about the difference between the 24H footage on various Quantum versions?
as Papa asks, What are the advantages of shooting with this new hack? Is it better for 24p in either H or L modes?
where will i spot the improvement? you said V7 is the best 24H yet.

Yes, being following the patches also and I am a bit loss also. It has become so technical I would like to get a bit more layman terms or explanation. Like when everybody says better quantization does it mean that the grain is smaller, better defined or something completely different like less banding, macro block etc. I am on quantum v2 now and just would like to know if there is any benefit, I like to push and grade my shots so any improvement would be nice.

Quantam 2 for the win :) I use L mode all the time for general shooting and it looks amazing, H is silghtly nice in the grain but thta's about the only advantage i see at a huge jump in space. What's going on with these new patches...

Got the two 64gb Sandisk cards in from JR Electronics .Authentic cards. Spanning in full quality mode now and getting some 720/60P. At least 1:30 so far.

Few more odds and ends and I'll have a complete kit.

Thanks for the patch, Sage.

I'll chime in and agree that I've lost track of what is going on with these patches.
End of November I was on top of it, but it's moving so fast now that most of the descriptions that accompany the new patches are a foreign language to me.

ok, maybe someone here who is really on top of all these patches,
could simplify a list of all the Quantum 'upgrades'?
(with a clear visual description of each improvement)
is this possible pleeeeaaassee? :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Man I'll tell you what, watching this hacked footage in vimeo with HD TURNED OFF looks a lot better than my 60D footage with HD on.

just tested all three settings.

shutter 60
iso 400
stopped down to 4.0

24p good for 2mins on death chart.
1080i stopped at 1:46 on death chart.
720p good for 2mins on death chart.

all 3 played back in cam. even the 1080i.

oddly, your version of driftwood's v7 didn't freeze up, whereas his did.
i still like his v3 better, but his 1080i/720p freeze up on the death chart.

Just to clarify: this patch does not have a 1080i option. By boosting 720, 1080i is made unstable because it is entwined. It is only for 720p 60 SH, and 720p 50 H (60 H will do for spanning). For the extreme, its an unstable 720p 60 SH, and a stable 720p 60 H.

I have a "library" of standard Class 10, 20mb/s. Anyone have a recommendation for a moderate slowmotion patch? I realize its a little off topic, but I figure most people in here are familiar with the other slowmotion patches. Spanning would be a bonus, but frankly if I can get up too 5min SOLID per clip, im happy.
I'm still waiting, pool side, to invest in a few 64 95s... just cant justify them over good glass at the moment.

Thanks in advance... P.S. Link those Vid samples, I gotta have a look! :D

Fwiw, I think the slow motion and 24L of this patch will work perfectly. I loosely tested on a class 6. The bottleneck for continuous slomo is the camera's bitrate pipeline, not the card.

how long are 4G of 24H with Quantom 7?

About a bit short of 4 minutes. The exact time is dependent on material filmed.

All of the Quantums are more or less the same - no tremendous differences. Driftwood is just trying out little tweaks to perfect it. Quantum means: AQ4 Intra. Seaquake was Aq3.
You wouldn't want to use 1, 5, or 6. Versions 2, 3 & 4 are essentially the same 24. What he has been doing since v6 is trying to smooth out the buffer use to avoid the quantizer from switching to a lower table in the matrix.
This means 'look up values' that automatically make the image worse because of a rough bitrate allocation over time, when the level of bitrate really available should have prevented such a table drop.

thanks for explaining.so you're saying that in V7 he minimized the bitrate drop even further? When will he stop trying and decide it's the best?

He tried to minimize the quantization drop - which determines how the bitrate available is implemented. I suppose when he labels a version as final he'll be done; he's described the current crop as beta. He has noted he will continue to incorporate changes after VK releases the next ptool for 1.1.

Curious to know what your full kit is. Do tell.

We're very fortunate that driftwood has such perseverance in striving for the best out of the GH2. Of course, none of this would be possible without Vitaliy!
