GH2 GH2 vs. 5D3

Thanks for that, Gary. Call me crazy, I still like the look of the GH2 better. Of course, fast pans are out, but otherwise...

Yeah, I preferred the look of the GH2 as well.

Jello? It's ALL trash.
Yes the jello is less on the 5D but it is still so bad I can't stand it at all.
I swear - just use any 3CCD video camera for your fast pan stuff and call it a day. The jello of CMOS is totally unusable to me.

I'm not sure you can compare the skew, these cameras are at different focal lengths.

Well once again, if you use a non OIS lens on the GH2 that's what you get, jello, jello and more jello. Why can't people understand that? There is a lot of horrendous GH2 footage out there shot with "wonderful" prime lenses.

Haha this is awesome. I can't believe how long the GH2 is reigning supreme; the footage wasn't just a little better, it blew it away as far as this test is concerned. Jello aside, gh2 motion / cadence simply cannot be beaten, so smooth / film like.

Ouch! My eyes are still trying to look sideways after that! Not sure I can make any judgment at all on shakey-cam footage

I wish the video could have been smoother but a) I had a very small window of time to do this and a tripod/monopod wouldn't have worked because I would have had to spend time mounting and dismounting both cameras. I barely made it back to where I was supposed to be at on time as it was.

The 5Dm3 seemed less jittery. I assume that's because it's heavier.

The 5D Mark III I used had a battery grip attached, thus even more surface area than just the body alone. The 35mm L series lens is also very big and made the GH2 quite front-heavy.

I wish the big guy in the black striped shirt could have been in both shots to get a real life moire test.

As soon as I saw that guy, I knew he was perfect with that shirt. Hate to have had him move off by the time I got the GH2 up and running, however, I can confidently say that moire on the GH2 would not have been a problem either. The short film I shot in January is a good illustration of that fact:

Ultimately, I think if you want that Photographic Full Frame video look, then the 5D Mark III is simply a no-brainer. Is it worth so much more than a GH2 outside of that? I don't really think so.

Gary,

Thanks for the early test. Appreciate it. It will be nice to get side-by-sides at some point with equivalent focal lengths and system lenses on both cameras.

For me, the takeaway is that this little $1000 camera is at least competitive with the latest generation $3500 FF camera in a straight up IQ comparison.

Seems to confirm Andrew Reid's initial assessment in his early hands-on with the 5D3:

"To be honest after today's hands-on I am a bit worried about the 5D Mark III's actual resolving power in 1080p as well. Zoomed-in on playback mode with the Zacuto EVF at 1080p I saw nothing to suggest it was as good as the GH2...I really do hope that the final 5D Mark III has better video resolution because at the moment it is nowhere near the GH2 or a moving still (at least from all the evidence so far). There's no reason why it shouldn't be. The GH2's hardware costs far less."

!
Pretty good value for money.

Hoping for a global shutter in the GH3, though. That jello was awful :-)

Cheers,

Bill

Man, the lighting was so horrendously ugly in that room it was hard to focus on the images. From just that footage I couldn't see much difference other than the worse rolling shutter on the GH2 and the fact the MK3 still had moire issues on the guys shirt.

Did you download the source? Because I didn't see any moire when I downloaded it.

Thanks for the quick test. But I think the video doesn't tell us much in terms of jello comparison. The GH2 looks bad against the 5D MK3 simply because of the longer focal length. With a 17.5mm lens (35mm equivalent) it would perform much better.
