GH2 Tele Conversion feature

And how does the mode work, IQ wise? Is it a good 1.1 mode or for some reason, it deliver non whorty images?

This might be a daft question... but would super8 lenses work on the 1/2" (?) sensor size.

What Super8 lenses would you have in mind? There were very few interchangeable-lens Super8 cameras made, and therefore very few Super8 lenses... maybe D-mount? But there pretty much aren't any, unless you've got something specific in mind. There's the Beaulieu Angenieux and Schneiders, but I doubt you'd find an adapter for Beaulieu mount.

Even so, I don't think they'd cover. Super8 is a lot smaller than 1/2". It's more 1/3"-sensor-sized.

I wanna see what high-isos look like with the crop mode. But wow, just being able to throw 1/2" glass on there is awesome! If the motors in these ENG lenses can be powered somehow there you go...servo zoom....finally a viable option for DSLR run-and-gun ENG type work, while still letting you use the same camera to setup nice interview shots, etc.

Could also be a good (faster) replacement for the kit lens...I use that lens mainly for deeper DOF shots anyway, so I wouldn't mind the deeper DOF given to me by the crop.

beaulieu lenses use regular c mount such as bolex the problem is that the zoom motor of the "newer" angenieux wont fit in the c mount adapter to m43, there are also leicina's lenses that come in c mount and leica m mount. I belive the later could work but am not 100% shure do some research...

On the subject.... don't you think Panasonic missed a massive trick not keeping a smaller megapixel sensor and having a 1:1 1080p crop at 2/3"?
It just would make SO much sense.

I think not.
Megapixel increase can result in aliasing reduction, for example.
As better binning could be possible.
Plus it is very important marketing theme.

I suggest you to come to every big photo store and you'll be amazed that megapixels still play major role.

Nikon do ok without going crazy for mpx... but for the consumer, you are generally right.

Interesting to hear the higher mpx can help the 4/3" image aliasing though.

C-mount, fast and good range... maybe it would be usable past a certain focal range?
It might cover, but whether it'd be usable or not is another question. Older angenieux lenses are not known for high quality. More modern "HEC" angenieux lenses are great, but the '70's era Angenieux lenses... not so much. Us Beaulieu fanatics back then were chompin' at the bit for the Schneider 6-66, not the Angenieux.

Now consider that a Super8 frame resolved, at most, about 640x480, and it calls into question the resolving power of the lens -- would it truly be sharp enough to be worth using? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. But it's fast enough that it may warrant experimentation!

Does anyone have the mm dimensions of s8 compared to 4/3" cropped? I'm not good at figuring this stuff out.
Super8 film is 4.8 x 3.5mm. Not sure what the cropped size of the GH2's extended crop is.

This was what I had my eye on...

Thanks for the replies.

Oh, sorry, I was thinking of D mount only -- I think it probably mount ok. Gh2 sensor / 2.6 is a little bigger than a super 8 frame, if I remember correctly (I looked over sensor sizes on wikipedia when I heard of the new tele-conversion). The glass might still cover it, though. With 3.9x 720p I'm sure it would.

The c-mount on there actually looks like it would attach pretty well to a c-mount adapter, as compared to some of the c-mount zooms that I own (which have required a lot of filing.)

Thanks guys, I think if one pops up cheap again, i'll grab it for some testing. It might resolve ok for PAL output... and could be interesting to use as a style in HD.... a bit like the 8mm style footage in the Beyonce video "why don't you love me"
