[GH2] One-time autofocus

I'm not sure if this has been already implemented in GH2.

When using m43 lenses on GH13, I've been switching AF and MF modes like crazy to do one time autofocus just before recording video. It focuses very fast and accurately. I wonder if there's such one-time autofocus mode. No I don't want to press and hold shutter button while manual focusing. Simply press shutter button once to do AF. then press the video record red button. then do MF while taking video. Is that possible in GH2?

I'm doing the exact same thing as you.
I tried everything I could think of to do a one-time autofocus, and the only thing that seems work is to turn the dial from AF to MF.
I'm used to it now. I just hope the dial doesn't wear out!

Some more hints on page 43 of the GH2 manual:

I'm surprised that this feature isn't more talked about, but I guess it would be of more interest to videographer (like me) and home video users, and not so much film-makers who are using manual lenses.

It's probably the #1 reason I wanna try out the GH2...to see how it works in real life...as I know eventually I'll finally tear the focus switch off my GH1 cameras from switching them so much. :D

I disagree. There is already a mode where it autofocuses only when you press the shutter. What we need is full time manual so that you can do manual pulls and then hit your shutter button for AF assistance when necessary. Why they havent dones this i have no idea

Definitely should be possible hardware wise, one of the advantages of having a fly by wire focus, it should make this sort of thing easier to implement

There is a setting in the camera menu that allows for manual focus in AF modes on the dial after AF is acquired. This would allow manual refocusing in AFS mode after you set the auto focus once. It is called AF + MF and is located in the Cwrench options. Unfortunately the MF only works if you continue to hold the button down halfway...it's primarily used for readjusting focus manually if the AF fails.

I have a GH2 with the 14-42 kit lens and I don't think it can do a 'push focus' like traditional video camera.

That won't work for me... cuz my right hand will be holding a hand-grip on the tripod mount. Why does it work that way? To save battery power? I know Canon allows AF+MF without holding down the button halfway. No I won't switch to Canon, but I hope Panasonic addresses this issue soon... before I break the focus mode dial button.

Heck... I can throw away the hand-grip... and use the right hand to control the camera buttons. Nothing but an extended eye cup, a portable audio recorder on a "cold" shoe, and Power O.I.S.!!!
