dvx100b, premiere cs3, 24pA interlace problems

so i think i doing everything correctly, as far as what ive seen in other threads, but i cannot get my 24pA footage out of premiere without some interlaced frames

importing to a 23.976 project & timeline
have repeat frame selected
capture settings are same as project

export as h.264 and progressive
but big movement still comes out interlaced

have no idea what im doing wrong

Make sure that you're export frame rate is 23.976, and not something like 29.97. If that doesn't work, if you could outline your steps from capture/import through export, that would help troubleshoot. I export progressive H.264 files frequently without problems.

here are screenshots of my project settings as well as export settings

Hmm, very odd. Everything looks to be in order. The Playback settings have no effect on your exports, so we can rule that out. Your export settings look good (though as a side note, depending on your application, I usually prefer to use square pixels and an adjusted frame size like 640x480, but that shouldn't have any bearing on interlacing)--I use the same basic settings myself with no issue.

Could you post up a screen grab of one of the interlaced frames? Just curious about what it is you're seeing...

sure thing

just to make sure, since im still new to this camera, scene settings is the only place where you set it to 24pA? because i have all my scene files as that, just wanted to make sure i didnt miss doing something else

Yeah, that's definitely not right. And correct; 24pA is set in the scene file settings. You have to save the scene file setting after you change it though, otherwise is will reset to whatever the original setting was after you power off the camera. As long as you did this, then you did record 24pA.

Do you see the interlacing in the project itself, in the program monitor? If you step through the timeline, frame by frame, are all the frames progressive, or do you see interlacing like above?

Did you capture in this project? Or did you capture in another project, and then import these files into this one? It shouldn't matter--I don't think--because PPro is able to strip out pulldown from both captured media and imported media.

i definitely have the settings saved

i captured the footage myself, at first from the dvx itself, then from a canon zr880 that is now my capture device, occured with both cameras

yes you do see interlacing in the timeline and if you go to the adobe media encoder window you do see interlacing in both "source" and "output" windows

and thanks for your help

Another "hmm". You should not be seeing any interlacing, whatsoever, in the program monitor by following the steps you've outlined here.

As you may or may not be aware, recording in 24pA mode results in a 2:3:3:2 pulldown, and the 3rd of 5 frames in the recorded DV stream is the only one that would show interlacing. This is good--this is what you want--because on capture into a 24p project, that frame is simply discard, leaving you 4 progressive frames from the original 5. Do that six times a second, and you have a purely 24-frame progressive stream. As a result, you should see nothing but whole progressive frames in the program monitor--any motion will be shown as a blur and not as an interlaced artifact like you've shown above.

I can only draw two conclusions:

1) You didn't actually shoot 24pA (or 24p for that matter, as PPro will remove this kind of pulldown as well)
2) You didn't capture in a 24p project, but instead captured in a 60i project

I don't think #2 is true, because you've shown your project settings above. This only leaves #1--which you've said isn't true either, but would be the only rational explanation. The playback device used when capturing doesn't matter; the software knows what to do with the video stream regardless of where it's coming from.

Another option occured to me just now, and that could be that you don't have User Bits in Recording Setup set to FRM RATE. I believe that this must be set this way in order for 24-frame progressive recording to work properly. Shot in the dark, as I believe the camera defaults this way, but might be something to check into.

i checked that setting and it was set to USER instead of FRM RATE, so you think thats a likely culprit?

i will shoot some test footage today and see if it made a difference

Ah... that could be it then. Yes, I think it needs to be set to FRM RATE, because that's what actually flags the fields/frames for removal. If you use the Counter button on the side of the camera to toggle through the display options, you'll happen on the "24P" display and you'll see it spinning through (I think) "0, 1, 2, 3, 4". Without that information recorded into the stream, the software has no idea which frames are interlaced and which are not, so it doesn't throw away the correct frame. Technically, your footage is 24p--it's just not flagged correctly to be edited that way. If you have After Effects, you could probably process it to remove the correct frame, though it would be a matter of trial and error for each clip until you found it's proper pulldown cadence.

Report back and let us know if that fixes the problem. Good luck!

EDIT: Just searched up the DVX100 manual (look here and search for "frm. rate"); I'm convinced that this is the problem you've run into. Once setting the User Bits to FRM RATE, you should be in good shape to process future recordings as true 24p streams.

ok so changed to FRM. RATE and went and shot some footage but something still isnt right, every frame is like what you see below, much more jagged than it should be im sure, also, when importing many frames were dropped, unlike before.

this is probably back into camera setting issues, but please help if you can.

Weird...

Let's try something different for a bit. I see that you're on a Mac; as such, you capture to DV QuickTime files vs. DV AVIs on PC. I would try downloading the latest version of QT, uninstalling your previous version, and installing the new one. No promises, but let's try there...

ok so i created a new project, tested with the old tape, with the previous footage, came it just like before but without the pixelization like the flowers above, then i switched tapes to the flower footage, recorded with FRM. RATE set and it came in just like the other footage, with interlaced frames on big movements, i am at a loss.

edit: was able to successfully bring footage into fcp with no interlaced frames, so that apparently means i dont have something right for premiere

have you tried re-interpreting the footage as something else (remove 24 pulldown, etc) or turning off frame blending?

i checked that setting and it was set to USER instead of FRM RATE, so you think thats a likely culprit?

i will shoot some test footage today and see if it made a difference
I am going to try this also because I have had the same problem. I will put it on FRM Rate and hope that is the fix! Now another question I have is the user buttons 1, 2 and 3. Do they operate independently of the scene files? Like if I am in user 1 will scene file 5 be active? If I am in user 2 and in scene file 5 will it look different?
