GH2 official discussion thread

The detail of the 14-140mm lens drops off from 100mm-140mm, any lens with a large focal range always makes compromises in quality at either end of their range.

The image quality across the focal length range of both lenses (the 14-140 and 100-300) is very close (does not vary noticeably), although there was some deterioration in the longer range from one of the 14-140s I checked - but not anywhere near enough to account for the difference I see here. What is not close is the image quality from the 14-140 (and I have checked three of them) compared to the image quality from the 100-300s. At 300mm the 100-300 is essentially the same as what you see here, where the worst aperture of the 100-300 (and one far faster than the 14-140) is quite a bit better than the best aperture (almost two stops slower) of the 14-140. I tended to use mostly primes until I switched the the Nikon 3D and 3Ds, but none of the zoom lenses I have (Canon 70-200 f2.8IS, Nikon 27-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8VR II or 200-400 f4.0) exhibit any noticeable falloff at their maximum focal lengths. We really do need a better lens, and one that is at least f4.0 at the maximum focal length. If you are working in a way that allows for the use of other lenses, there are options, but for following fast motion, AF is almost mandatory on the GH2.

FW 1.0 ist the one, that the GH2 has, when it comes out of the box.
There is not firmware update up to now.

...on this site...it says there was a firmware version 0.2 before FW 1.0.

Before the GH2 was officially released, several people had access to preproduction models. Those cameras had lower firmware versions.

This issue has to do with focus tracking being available on pre-production models and having been taken out with the official release, for whatever reason.

Sounds like you'd appreciate the Olympus 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 auto-focus zoom. While it requires a Four-Thirds adapter and is not as compact and lightweight as the Lumix zooms, it's a significantly faster and sharper lens. I have the earlier model which auto-focuses on the G2/GH2 but not the GF1/GH1. The auto-focus is precise but not quick. The newer SWD model auto-focuses quickly on all Lumix G-series cameras and is priced accordingly.

That would be great if 50-200 SWD lens works on the GH2. I looked on the Panasonic site, and they indicate it will AFS, but not work in AFC? Is this the case?
I would need the DMW-MA1 adapter - correct?

Also, do you know if the AF100 will take stills (RAW images), or is it only video?

Thank you!

Bill

Yes, as with other Four-Thirds lenses, the Olympus 50-200mm SWD works only in AFS and manual focus modes and requires the Four-Thirds adapter from either Panasonic or Olympus. The only lenses to my knowledge that also work in AFC auto-focus mode are native Micro-Four-Thirds lenses.

The AF100 only records at video resolution and lacks the GH2's Extended Optical Zoom feature.

Ok, thanks. I would like the AFC for both action video and stills. Are there any good, fast micro-four-thirds lenses?

Is there no way to turn of that shutter noise when taking single shots? I see a new menue : BEEP : E- shutter volume which sounds promising but seems to only permit to turn it off during Auto Bracket.
I would at least like to turn down the volume for single photos...or turn it off alltogether. I dont like this fake shutter sound with the mirror clicking although I understand its existence...

It is no fake shutter sound.
There is a shutter moving twice when you take a picture.
This is what you hear.

about the judder - i watched all my recent footage from GH2 on my projector via popcorn streamer.
it's a different world from my monitor. while the monitor shows an exaggerated unnatural judder,
the projector judder is natural, smooth and almost filmic. so there.
i must find a new monitor that support this 24p for editing and watching more fluently.
any ideas?

If you look for a small monitor, I don't know. On a Panasonic Plasma TV (I use 50V10) with "Smooth Film" switched on all judder is gone (speeds film up to 4x24p=96p)and image is as smooth as 50i shots I took, but much sharper. You have to play via mediaplayer or BR player with 24p capabilities though, otherwise conversion to 50 / 60p introduces another kind of judder from conversion processing (which is much worse). I can imagine professionals like to have 25p or 50p (or 30 and 60 in US) but for standard home video work 24p in combination with a good TV works great. (and looks much better than played on a computer monitor).

Is there software out there (Windows player) that can do the same trick as the plasma?

Has anyone figured out a way to make aperture the priority for the manual exposure settings? I'm talking about how you have to push the dial to toggle between setting shutter speed and aperture. For video I'm almost always wanting to leave shutter speed constant and change aperture, but I keep changing shutter speed by mistake since that's the default. I can live with this but it would be nice not to have to remember to switch from shutter to aperture. Especially since I'm using c1, c2, and c3 for different iso settings...
Repeating the above quote from an earlier post since nobody answered it.

But more importantly, I've found that the feature allowing you to take photos while you are recording video does not work in movie mode, which means I can only use auto exposure (recording video while in one of the photography modes) if I want to use this feature. I've looked through the manual carefully and I can't see any way around this. Is there?

And, is there a way to retain the iso limit set when shooting auto exposure video? The manual says its disabled, so in low light you could get unacceptably high isos...

Hi, I'm new to the forum. How can I get the English menu on a Japanese GH2? I need help, please.
I don´t want to hurt your feelings, but I don´t think that Vitaliy meant 1 post users as reputable :)
If you read thru the thread, you will find out why. So just read ;) I know it´s a lot of pages, but I could do it, so can you.

Cheers.

I live in Australia and I want to buy the NTSC GH2 because of the better slow motion of 60fps but I'm worried about indoor lighting flickering like crazy. My GF1 has flicker reduction if you press the trash button while in movie mode when you are not filming. Does the NTSC GH2 do this? Or could I just put the camera on 1/50 shutter speed to sync to the local lighting

My GF1 has flicker reduction if you press the trash button while in movie mode when you are not filming.

That is just the shutter speed effect preview screen, so if you were set at 1/50 neither screen view would flicker and nor would the recorded video.

On photo mode on the GF1 it's shutter speed effect preview. On the video mode the trash button is Flicker reduction mode is it different on the GH2?
