GH2 official discussion thread

At the stock bitrates the Sandisk Extreme is complete overkill, but if a hack is released allowing you to up bitrates you can take advantage of the cards. The default rate is 24Mb/s that is megabits, the sandisk extreme is 30MB/s that is megabytes. There are 8 bits to a byte so the sandisk is really 240Mb/s(in reality it's a bit slower than this at it's minimum speed, all cards are). That is why a class 4 card is fine.

With the GH13 hack, people were pushing bitrates of 100Mb/s with MJpeg

went to a sandisk dealer yesterday and they told me sandisk is phasing out the Extreme 30Mb/s SDs and the 40Mb/s Extremes are coming next month.

Personally I'll be happy with Transcend Class 6 (which are said to be closer to their Class 10), at least until a hack really uses the extra bandwidth. Even then I think it unlikely, as the GH2 codec is already so much better, so no real need to hit anywhere near 100mbps - well maybe unless Vitaliy can unlock the 120fps sensor mode the GH2 uses for auto-focus :).

Of course if you care about stills, don't forget that the speed is also relevant to how quickly shots can be flushed to the card. It would be interesting to find out where the GH2 tops out on that. An ultra-fast card may be wasted if the body can't write that fast.

GH2 / Lumix 14-140 - Short Night + Ride Test:

Quickly shot and edited today. All handheld, some stabilization and noise reduction in post. No Grading. Certainly, its not a "light wonder" but if you push it to the limits a bit you can get some acceptable results imo...

Panasonic Gold SdHC 16GB 'smart cards'.

Panasonic Gold SdHC 16GB 'smart cards'.

I just went through the SD card research myself. I chose Panasonic Gold. They don't mention it unless you dig a bit deeper but the 16GB cards have the same technology that the new 48GB and 64GB cards do, one of them being "static wear leveling". Another is the, "refresh function" and my favorite, the "automatic data retrieve function". It's like having a little techie living in each card, LOL.

I went for the best deal which was actually at my local Future Shop for the 16GB version. Right now the size is perfect and the price was right, I got mine for $99 just before Xmas.

One thing I miss from my 7D is the transfer speed. I could transfer from the CF via FW800 onto my PC at 70 MB/s. For movie files from SD it all depends on the size and how many, the larger the slower it gets. Other than that I love the 14-140 on the GH2 among a bzillian other things.

I had to laugh at this, while double checking my info I came across a comparison between the new Panasonic SDXC Cards and the price of Gold. Apparently the 64GB card is worth 8x it's weight in Gold.....:-Laugh(DBG)-1

I bought a remote control and an intervalometer for the GH13 and they work fine.
But both do not work on the GH2. Chinese stuff, JJ-something. Quite opular a year ago if I remember right.
Any ideas?

Is it a JJC TM-D? I just got mine yesterday and thought it wouldn't work at first sight. Later on I noticed that I have to press it quite firmly into the GH2 connection port. Now it's working. Deutscher Meister wird nur der BVB (-:

Thanks a lot. It neeeds an additional push when you think it is in already.
Different to the GH1.

Thanks, both work now on the GH2 as well.

Nach gestern Abend sowieso.
Das 3:1 war schon beeindruckend. :D

Übrigens, damit der normale Smiley kommt musst Du es umkehren:

Erst der Doppelpunkt : und dann die Klammer ) ohne das Minus -.
Dann kommt das raus: :)

I recently bought a gh2 and I have some issues with it. If someone could answer I'd be so thankful. First thing, in some conditions it gives me horrible banding issues, it looks like scanning the whole image. When I find the right shutter the banding disappears, but it looks like a fabrication issue to me. Does anyone experienced the same thing? Should I wait for the firware update that will fix the problem or should I give it to a panasonic service? Secondly, camera genarates some stange lens flares in certain light conditions such as car lights, street lights, tv reflection etc. . I don't know is it because of the Cmos or the lens(Panasonic 20mm 1.7 pancake). Thanks

I don't have the GH2 yet, but CMOS + fluorescent light = frequency banding, using shutter you "match" that frequency. It happens in any CMOS camera (5D, 7D, etc).
About flare, it is how light goes through lens elements, the 20mm is a short lens with less elements, should be good, do you have any filter in the lens ? Post a flare image...

I only have an uv filter on the lens. Do you think a ND filter help to reduce the banding? I'll try to post as soon as possible. Thanks

No, all an ND filter does is block light. They are mainly used in video if you want to use a particular shutter/aperature combination, but the scene would be overexposed with them (eg. in bright sunlight). Camcorders actually have them built in, so that you are never stuck with too much light.

Anyway, post some screenshots so we can see your problems.

No, banding is light frequency vs shutter speed, set the correct shutter for the light environment and probably it will be ok. Filter can cause flare.

Guys, we are approaching new phase of hacking project.
Open databases for all cameras. I'll open all documentation that I have.
With dedicated site, wiki, and developers forum.

But we need some money for scripts licenses (it'll be mostly forum and various plugins) and hosting, about $400.

So, if you like this project go to www.gh1-hack.info and donate.
As soon as we'll have required funds we'll start new phase with few surprises :-)

Thanks in advance.
