GH2 official discussion thread

Buy a big hdmi monitor. No need for MF assist. I usually turn it off.

have you ever tried to balance a 17" HD monitor on top of your camera on a stabilizer like the Blackbird or Merlin ?!?

Hehe, I jest of course, but for me, I need my focusing solutions light and the mass centrally containable.

Have any additional details about the HDMI-out emerged since Bloom's blog post stating that the feed was clean? Wasn't an external recorder test supposed to be immediately forthcoming?

Thanks.

If it were "easy" (inexpensive) to implement I would expect it to be common on cameras in this capability/feature range. Since it's not common, I suspect it's not easy or inexpensive to do.

.
Video focus assist is called peaking and it easy to implement (software only) , MF assist like GH1 GH2 came from still camera world.
It took Panasonic and users a while to understand how useful a cropped sensor might be . It will be the same with peacking on the LCD EVF.

Thanks Sassi. If peaking had been mentioned I would have discussed it, but the original question was concerning magnified focus assist. I'm very familiar with peaking features typically found on pro video cameras. Cheers.

Joking, but there's some truth to it: DSLRs & their relatively low-res LCDs alias so bad it serves as an unintended focus assist. Just adjust the focus until maximum aliasing is achieved, and then you know the video is perfectly in focus! ;-)

To the best of my knowledge, no, the GH2's "MF Assist" focusing/magnification feature can't be used while the cam is in video record mode.

(Or, if it can, it hasn't been reported by early GH2 owners.)

Refer to the note at the bottom of page 85 in the DMC-GH2 user manual:
http://dlc.panasonic-europe-service.com/EUDocs/
But with a HDMI recorder if we don't need to record in-camera too, it would be possible to have the "MF Assist" focusing/magnification working during the HDMI recording via external device, no?

Oh wow look at the difference in motion, guess none of this is really all that surprising though, especially when comparing the 17mbps "old" 1080i60 recording

Looking at this clip via HDMI on a monitor, I find the BlackMagic slightly sharper, but I find the motion, (look at the cloth above the left glas while the picture is moving), to be much smoother in the AVCHS version.
This will do for me.
I do not need an external recorder.

Have you guys watched this? http://www.vimeo.com/17327938

I was like WOW!!!! HDMI Capture will take this to another level but it looks amazing as it is on my full HD monitor. I think this is making me re think my whole 2011 choices. This will be a steal!!!!

Holy sh*t! Now that is sharp, and so detailed...

As for the HDMI stuff, that was all interlaced- if they had shot it 24 progressive, the "i" artifacts would be gone.

Looking at this latest vid.. Recording at prores HQ, it would be insane looking...

You could extract almost any one of those frames as beautiful hd res stills and probably print them to 7x5 with excellent results, maybe even 10x8, will give it a try. Its looking amazing isnt it:happy:

hey

now can please someone organize all those vimeo "wow"'s to a statement i can understand ? i cannot tell what is outside recorder, in camera, post processed.. confused..
this is a very crucial stage before making next decisions. what do we know from all this and what is the good/bad news.

Thanks

In a nutshell - with reference to the links I posted (not the HDMI capture link earlier in the thread) - this is the best video imaging I have seen come out of a DSLR. These were AVCHD captures and they look stellar. My humble 2 cents. Just ordered one from Japan on Ebay!

but as i recall none of them is available as MTS... i (or someone else) need to ask the uploaders on the exact settings etc.. intersting.

They are some mpgs - some transcoding perhaps - perhaps some sharpening - I don't know but whatever has been done in post - it is still a nice image without too many artifacts that I object too. A tiny amount of aliasing will be present as expected but hey the image will be softer with faster lenses.

Editor's Note: After editing the video Canopus HQ Codec, MPEG-2 50Mbps in the output file. The editorial department does not guarantee that we will not play the videos posted. In addition, specific questions about the playback environment, so please understand that we will not answer.

Whatever that means... weird translation. Japanese speaking people in here?
