GH2 official discussion thread

Have you guys watched this? http://www.vimeo.com/17327938

I was like WOW!!!! HDMI Capture will take this to another level but it looks amazing as it is on my full HD monitor. I think this is making me re think my whole 2011 choices. This will be a steal!!!!

The difference is marginal, and i even would choose compressed in camera captured video in this case. Try to increase contrast very much, compression softens the noise in the image and looks more pleasing for me. Chroma subsampling is the same there in compressed and blackmagic captured versions, i think it's 4:2:0. I would like to see how in camera compression handles extreamly dynamic shots in comparition to hdmi capture. (f.e some light flickering, moving camera, maybe some in the club dancing shot) and green screen with motion blur and some shadows maybe

Have a look at this clip:

Somebody compares the 1080/60i in camera with 1080/60i recorded with BlackMagic IntensitiyPRO HDMI Capture

Until the person who shot this footage provides more information about how this clip was shot, I remain hopeful but skeptical: Until then, I say it's _allegedly_ GH2 live HDMI video captured using a BlackMagic card. I hope I'm wrong, but I think this sort of video clip could be faked relatively easily.

I'd prefer this person had a good track record on Vimeo (they've only posted this one video with that particular account name), or even if they would just post a few words describing how they did it (they've posted nothing, not even a descriptive title or follow-up comment), and maybe a snapshot of their set-up ... but there's none of that.

So, again, I really, really hope I'm wrong about this video, but without more information I'm trying not to get too excited about it. :-)

This clip is also being discussed here:

Anyone tested the GH2 24p AVCHD for keying work?

I'd expect GH2 AVCHD video to key at least as well as hacked GH1 AVCHD video, which can work quite well.

For example, there's a brief green-screen clip I shot recently with my hacked GH1 (1080p24 progressive) included in my demo here (at the 21-sec. point):
http://vimeo.com/16879681

Of course, GH2 & GH1 AVCHD is only 8-bit (as with many other cams), but quite a few folks are using them with success for carefully shot green screens.

On a related note (GH2 vs. hacked GH1 video quality), see:

I have the GH1(3), and I have the 40mbs reliability patch, so 24p is unchecked (I do pulldown removal in post), but it seems like the original interlace-y effects screw up my keys. I guess I was wondering if the true 24p of the GH2 would help this? I'm hoping to dump my 5D (which I use for keying work to pretty good success) and get a GH2, provided it can pull decent keys.

Barry Green did a test when native 24p hack was first made available for GH1 and found (IIRC) that chroma sampling was progressive vs interlaced in 24PsF footage. Given that GH2 records native 24p footage it is reasonable to assume that interlaced chroma artifacts will not be present in GH2 24p footage.

Just to say, the post you quote me on is not the comparison of the AVCHD and hdmi capture. I was referring to the mpeg files from impresswatch.co.jp which are not hdmi. IMHO the difference of HDMI capture and AVCHD is not marginal in ALL the cases I have done. I always get home and when I review the footage I always marvel at how much better it is. After a transcode it loses the mojo off course.

http://www.henryolonga.net/Blog/?p=674 . You can download some first generation Cineform files here to review. The difference when done right is delightful.

On this thread example it seems marginal but when you see what the first generation files look like you may see a posiitive benefit. The 24p AVCHD looks really good though.

I was trying to figure out how to transform the footage out of video space and into a more film-like one.
Color science is a big deal with the gh2; please share your thoughts and feelings about how you would handle the color science of the camera vs. others (such as the canons).

Am I reading the Japanese translation correctly on this latest test ( http://www.vimeo.com/17327938 )they used the 14mm 2.5 Lumix lens? If this is what 24p, 24mb/s AVCHD captured over HDMI to blackmagic looks like , then I'm impressed. I had been contemplating a 5D, but this may convince me otherwise.
Is it confirmed somewhere that this is an HDMI capture to a blackmagic card? I don't see that anywhere on the translation?

you did well (except the skin tones- but there's not much you can do about that)

I believe that this is AVCHD. And it is darn good.

I downloaded this video. It is just overexposed. You should expose for the highlights and set the camera up a little flatter.
On any video camera - even the RED - if you blowout the highlights they are usually gone.
With AVCHD you have to get the right exposure.
I would like to see some GH2 footage in a properly lit interview.
All the footage I have seen so far has been grabbed in parties, or off the street.

Couldn't agree more; I also think they weren't shooting in the best color profile settings as well. Highlights aren't blown here, but in a video space, highlights are much farther from midtones.
I want to have confidence that even the most flagrant video example can be brought back from the dead.

I would like to hear any strategies/perspectives on how one personally handles the compressed video space.

Subtle... rich... easy to work with; I love it. The camera is better than I give it credit.

Wow, ok I totally missed this footage till just now. This looks really good. This is the first footage I've seen that really makes me want this camera. The detail on the wides looks really good.
