GH2 official discussion thread

Hi,

in the Vimeo forum, the user Jonty made an offer, to supply GH2 cameras to Vimeo members,
who definitively want to have an NTSC GH2 before Christmas.
They are Japanese GH2 normally and of course legally imported to Taiwan and he has them in stock.
I have nothing to do with him (no business connection) except for being in the same Vimeo group.

I asked, if he would make this offer also for the DVXuser and he wrote, that he is not member there and would not like to join only to make this offer.
He permitted, me to post the following offer and maybe some of you wold like to use this opportunity to get a Japanese GH2:

+ Package Details
Brand new Japanese GH2 Body
14-140mm HD lens
8GB SDHC card
Kenko UV filter
Lens cleaning kit (Lenspen brush, wipes, cleaning solution etc.)

+ Payment Details
US$1,899 / £1249 / €1419 via PayPal
If anyone would like additional buyer protection, I can create an eBay listing, but the price will be $70 higher to cover the eBay fees.

+ Shipping Details
The price includes courier delivery with insurance and web tracking (usually around 5-7 days to most countries).
There probably will be customs duties to pay, but as every country is different, these are the buyer's responsibility.

+ Language Details
These are Japanese models, so the camera menus (and I guess manuals) are all in Japanese. There was no official way to convert a Japanese GH1 into English, other than using a hacked firmware, so please don't expect to change the GH2.

+ Contact / Questions
If anyone's interested, please feel free to drop me (Jonty) a line at 'linqiangdi' at 'yahoo.com.tw'.

I totally understand anyone's reservations about buying like this.
However, with the recent GH2 delays and Christmas coming, I hope I can help people out.

@ Moderators: If this offer is not OK due to forum regulation, feel free to delete this post.

You can buy from any retailer in Japan the exact same deal for less.

This is a couple of pages back now, but it's worth nixing this sort of misinformation:

"Uncompressed 10-bit YUV 1920x1080", which is ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2

No, it isn't. ProRes is not uncompressed; it is very very far from uncompressed. This is an alarmingly common misconception. ProRes is compressed, Avid's DNxHD is compressed, Redcode is just JPEG-2000 and it is very very very compressed. Yes, I know everyone desperately wants to be able to have uncompressed quality without investing in the gear to do it but unfortunately once again wanting something to be true doesn't make it true.

"10-bit YUV uncompressed" almost certainly refers to Y210 (Blackmagic's designation) or a comparable codec, which really is uncompressed, and at 10-bit YUV that's just under five megs a frame, plus a bit of padding, and no you cannot record it on your eight hundred dollar Macbook no matter how white and fashionable it is.

Check this out, 1080i? wow? do I need my eyes checking? would love to see the original clips, quite a bit of motion to check the codec, OOC too, hmm!

Nice find. They used narrow DOF to good advantage. Not a lot of what I would call fast motion, but that's often a good thing. ;-)

I agree it would be good to see the original clips, because YouTube/Vimeo compression certainly takes its toll.

Question? will you get perfect half speed-fluid motion in 1080i mode in post like you do when you do 0.5 speed with the 720p? that would be really cool if you do?

He has another clip here, he's using the basic zoom I think and the 25mm f1.4 d summilux(nice lens but pricey), the fluid base manfrotto is also put to good use?

I believe he was using the 561BHDV-1 monopod for the shots: http://akehi.hi-clutch.com/images/manfrot.jpg. From Manfrotto:
http://www.manfrotto.com/product/8374.76909.76924.0.0/561BHDV-1/_/FLUID_VIDEO_MONOPOD_WHEAD. $270 from B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618351-REG/Manfrotto_561BHDV_561BHDV_Video_Monopod_with.html.

Assuming that's true, this is the first video I've seen shot with one of those and the results are pretty impressive for a monopod. It looks like a very good, portable support for the GH2 (which I'm ordering this weekend).

Regards,

Dan.

That's the EX tele Zoom mode, 2.6x in 1080p, 3.9x in 720p. One of the most touted new features of the GH2. Can't help you on where to find it though. Look for the EX icon

Ah I found out where it is, it's on the 3rd page of the video setup menu, under the Mic Level Adjustment and above the Digital Zoom.

Your results will depend on the resolving power of the lens you're using, some lens are quite soft in the centre

what i don't get is why this ex tele mode provide BETTER result than without the ex tele mode.. explain please!

Because the camera doesn't have to do any line skipping or pixel binning, using the EX Tele Conversion mode be almost the same as taking a normal photo and cropping out the middle of the photo in 1920 x 1080 resolution. Whereas if you were to compare a normal video frame grab to a normal photo which is downscaled, the photo downscaled will be quite a bit better than the video frame grab. Know I don't know if any of this is actually true in practice as I don't have the GH2 myself as of yet.
