Atomos says they offer the same ProResHQ with Ninja

http://www.atomos.com/Ninja/#techspecs

the same 10-bit ProRes codecs right?

Yes, correct, the Ninja & KiPro Mini will both record to ProRes (and all ProRes codecs are 10-bit).
http://www.aja.com/products/kipro/ki-pro-mini/ki-pro-mini-description.php

My point is that the Mini will also have XLR inputs, whereas the Ninja will have mini-jacks. True, the Mini's XLR feature may cost several hundred dollars more compared to the Ninja (depending on how you figure storage media costs), but for some folks the difference will be well worth it. For others, not.

And, as Vitaliy & others have pointed out, the vast majority of GH1 & GH2 owners probably won't ever buy an external HDMI recorder, and many (most?) won't even buy an external audio recorder, either. Depends on what folks think they need and can afford. It's all good.

Have you noticed that recording stops just slightly before you press the stop button? I'm guessing it stops at the last GOP and unless you're lucky enough to end your recording exactly at the end of a GOP you're going to get a slight trim at the end. Glad you got one, I ordered mine from Japan the day they went on sale and haven't looked back since (I full well remember last year's GH1 North American shipping fiasco).

Yes, exactly the same as on a gh1. You just let it roll a bit longer.

Regarding the hdmi out:

It is defiantly sending a clean signal out (not avchd compressed). I can visually see this as grain/noise is not compressed where as on the avchd clips, much of the really tight "grain" is compressed out and smoothed by the compression.

Regarding the 17 seconds "freeze frame" myth:

I dont have an hdmi recorder, but I just did three tests where I did a continuos pan while pixel peeping on a 1080p monitor (via hdmi out) while recording, there are no frame studders anywhere (I recorded for 60 seconds and was scruntizing the 17 seconds area) looks like its pumping true 23.98 out of the hdmi 4:2:2 with no noticeable compression and no "freeze frames".

:grin:I think it would be helpful if people didn't confuse the word "hypothesis" with "question." The only hypothesis was that if the video stream was being fed post-encoder, that it would possibly be a marketing decision to protect sales of the AF100.
But the question was, "Could it be . . . ?" And that was clarified as a question motivated by word-choice in the manual.
So glad you're here to clear things up though. Never would have guessed it was originally written in Japanese.
Oh, and there is no such thing as a sunrise, either. Searches on Google and wiki show it to be an earth-turn. LOL
If you can't figure out what I mean, why offer an opinion? Or are you suggesting that video, after being encoded, can't also be tapped for HDMI display? Oops. Google search shows that taps and faucets are rarely used as transmitters for HDMI.
How literal

Great news!!! Been watching Bloom's site for 2 days LOL. Thanks for the update. I know doing a encode-decode would be an unnecessary expense for this camera, but in this economy, there's no telling when a company might turn into a car-dealer just to survive. Very, very cool.:)

:-)

Any same man won't tell you about "streaming AVCHD over HDMI" :-)
I know the man who came with this idea on his site. But at least I know that he is insane :-)
Ha ...ok.. I get it.

I guess if I had stopped and thought about it then it wouldn't have made any sense. Even if something like this existed I would expect there to be some sort of obvious delay.

Have we decided the PAL region camera has 25p yet?

Hi Phil: To the best of my knowledge, the final production PAL version of the GH2 has not shipped yet.

The GH2's UK user manual doesn't indicate the PAL version of the cam will feature 25p, but user manuals aren't always the final word on ... everything.

I find it unfathomable that companies like Panasonic and particularly the folks who built the GH2 seem perfectly happy to allow us to wallow around in the cesspool of 17 second FF myths, 24P speculation, HDMI out uncertainties and on - even as the camera is on the market and selling.

I would have thought that at least natural human nature and out-and-out pride would have the engineers and marketers overjoyed to talk about their baby, their proud creation that has consumed them over these past years.

Imagine a prideful, knowledeable engineer providing public-consumption insider GH2 tidbits and explanations and backgrounders. That's the kind of stuff that would bond me to the camera and whip me into a raving fan-boy.

Is it a language barrier thing? An inscrutable guerilla marketing ploy? A threatening direction from the powers above? Paranoia? Indifference? I don't get it.

For some reason, RED came up.

> 25p only @ 17Mbps (24p @ 24Mbps) AFAIK

Nope. There's no evidence whatsoever that I've seen that there is 25P presently. Bloom mentioned 25P yesterday but corrected himself and said it was 50i. We live in hope that it might be added as a late-breaking feature.

+1 to this! Although a software rather than hardware company, Cineform is a perfect illustration of the success of such an approach.

These are good news, thanks. Although, as Barry accurately pointed out yesterday, we cannot know yet, at this point, without verifying in loco if that signal is pure 4:2:2 or just 4:2:0 after all.

+1 million! :-)

(I don't get it, either.)
