GH2 official discussion thread

At least I'm discussing what the GH2 can do rather than what it CANNOT (i.e. 25p framerate).

Yes much more interesting than the endless repetition of things we already knew weeks ago. I was already curious about what the crop mode would do to DOF, imagine shooting wild life with the new 300mm zoom, you want a large DOF then.

F1.4 Depth of Field x 5.2 crop factor = F 7.3

Do I understand it correct if I'm saying that if you shoot with F1.4 and you use the crop factor, the DOF becomes like if you are shooting with F7.1? That's very good for those who want large DOF.

With a 2.6x crop, fewer total photons are being collected by the reduced number of image sensing cells. Since the same level of luminance is maintained, does the effective noise level increase?

It shouldn’t affect noise at all. Each pixel in the sensor sees the exact same thing as it does without the extended teleconveter feature. It simply just ignores the sensor pixels outside of a 1920x1080 or 1280x720 rectangle in the center of the sensor.

Personally I think they added this feature directly from the requests for it on this forum. They seem to have given us exactly what everyone was asking Vitaliy to give us with respect to this feature.

Although, I am still wondering how long it will be before they put a point and shoot toggle lever on an m4/3s camera and give us a continuous digital zoom feature. It would not be true 1:1 pixel mapping for most focal lengths. However, their scaling is already very good. I wouldn’t mind that if I could get a continuous and silent zoom for my 14mm F2.5 pancake lens.

I haven't heard anything from you but negativity so far. How about focusing on the topic of the thread rather than abusing other posters with juvenile insults?

My suggestion to create a last-minute list of feature requests and send it to Panasonic directly is very positive and constructive, I am sorry if you experience it as insulting and abusive. Some people are very sensitive it seems.

I stick with my suggestion. Create this list of feature requests, make sure everything is covered, have it electronically signed by a bunch and fax it to Panasonic UK, DE, NL, FR, HK, AU, JP, etc etc

Maybe 1 hour work for one person? Problems are there to be eliminated in the most effective and easiest way.

I would think so...as a best guess. In my mind I can only think that if there was noise there "before" the crop blowup...then it will be magnified even more. Then again the camera might have some super duper noise reduction kicking in. I do know from the little samples we've seen it looks clean...but ...who knows.

EDIT: Maybe I'm just thinking of a digital crop (blowup).

I have a wireless one, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. But all it does is send one of two resistances via a 2.5mm 4 pole plug. One for focus and one for shutter. I can't imagine Pan. redesigning the established plug. But who knows. It is the same plug that inputs the stereo signal from a mic, but via the other 2 poles.

zzzzz....ZZZZZZZZZZ.....zzzzzzzzz...

is it here yet???.....huh ok ....someone text me when a real Gh2 get in someones hands...so we can start some cat fights on the real deal .... LOL !

Holiday time for me ...see y"all in a couple of weeks ....please be civil...

cheers!

Japanese members? Wait. That's me...well I live in Japan in any case. I'm thinking I'll be sitting out the early adopter status this time... But you never know considering I was just going down to the store to have a *look* last time... As it turns out, I'll be having a peak on release day....we'll see how that goes...

Something tells me that once again you will be the one getting the earliest model and giving us all the scoop (hint, hint). Seeing that you did such a good job the first time around (nudge, nudge). lol

For sure, you would make a lot of people happy here if you could give us some good raw footage (including me). But if you don´t want to be an early adopter: Do you have something like a "14-day money back guarantee" in Japan? We have such a right in the sales conditions, if we buy the product over the internet. In that case you could check out the Gh2 for a couple of days without any risk...

Something tells me if I keep it for a while to test it, it'll be a long while indeed... I do have 300 bucks in points just sitting there... Sheesh, it's basically free for a body only. Who knows? We'll see...
BTW thanks Ian for those completely genuine words of praise ;) Not even a sniff of ulterior motive!!!

Some new footage from a French site and done with a good sense of humour

I think this looks really clean at 1600iso, not bad!
It does indeed look clean. I'm however reminded of some early reports that GH2's overstates sensitivity ratings a la Canon, at least compared to GH1, by ~1EV.

This is interesting here:
I rushed to the HDMI output, and tried to save the stream with Aja KiPro Quictime in 4:2:2 and ProRes HQ is where I got a shock, the output has not designed to be registered. To sum it already is 1080i50 even if we set the device in 1080p24. The image produced on the output seems less good than the outcome of the card AVCHD 1080p24 24 mb / s?!
Let us hope this is only a pre-production firmware anomaly, as Bloom reported HDMI out at 24 Hz in Cinema Mode that has nags but is otherwise clean.

I expect that the GH2 will only output 1080i over HDMI. In may embed 1080p @ 24 FPS in 1080i but I am not sure why everyone thinks it will do native 1080p @ 24 FPS output over HDMI.

"The output resolution of the DMC-GH2 can be selected as 1,080i, 720p or 480p (576p in PAL system)." I have never seen anything that indicates that it will pass through a native 1080p signal over HDMI.

I wonder what a PAL TV would do with the 24 FPS output of the GH2? If it outputs it in native 1080p @ 24 FPS would your PAL TV be able to display it properly?

My guess is that the final product won't output 24 FPS for PAL cameras. It will only do 1080i over HDMI. Hopefully, someone will show that this is incorrect but I have not seen any indication of it so far.

If you think about it logically, sensor is outputting 24fps, AVCHD encoder is outputting 24p, why should additional procedures add the 60i wrapper? How will this work for PAListan? Add the unusual 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown?

In any event, Bloom already posted the following screenshot. Hopefully, this is one thing that will not change when the prototype goes into production.
