GH2 official discussion thread

I donated for the Gh2 body only two days ago as I missed any message on the issue .
Maybe better put it somewhere else ...
I hope you'll have a GH2 body asap !

It all depends on two things - few last donations and Panasonic GH2 release date :-)

Can you shed some light on the 720p50/60 format ? on paper it has the same specs as the GH1 720p50/60, 17mbps, no B-frames !
720p50 on pre hacked GH1 would break on some occasions !

You can't be certain about it on this stage.
Encoders are not finished yet.

Why not start a new sticky thread, with a first post that can be edited occasionally (like this one) by the moderator .
we can call it "Requests for the upcoming GH2" and when the GH2 will be available we then can change the name to "Firmware request for the GH2" .

I am sure that we'll have such thread.
May be it is just a bit too early.
They are working hard in this last days before release.
And already implemented bunch of very useful features.
So, may be good idea to give them some small rest :-)

Sounds like you might be having some input into the final product Vitaliy? cool.

If so the original hack has achieved things on many levels, this is very encouraging.

According to the moment I am thinking of changing hacking project official song
to this one - http://vimeo.com/13762496 .

Btw, this song has very interesting connection to previous one. Very hard to spot.
But as Barry got the hidded meaningof first one, may be someone could get this one also.

We must wait for final firmware to get proper answer to this question.
Plus you must remember that realy fast AF lens is only 14-140mm.

Am hoping the really fast AF will also apply to the new 100-300.

And Adventsam asked about the output being 8 or 10 bit -- think you can count on 8 bit seeing how the AF100 is only 8 bit 4:2:2. Not sure if the GH2 will be 4:2:2 though.

So we are getting 1080p uncompressed footage from the gh2 if I am not mistaken :-) That would be a first for any dslr and make the gh2 an even better purchase. If someone has one of the hdmi recorders the codec bitrate would not be an issue any more. My only gripe would be the 25p and a need for a hack.

from what Vitaliy said i'm not sure about the 1080p

I would not call HDMI output uncompressed. Less compressed than AVCHD? Yes. Not "uncompressed" however. Also, remember it is very likely only an 8-bit signal. And with visual nags (at least currently).

Also, Canons have had HDMI out for years.

'But output switches to proper resolution and fps as soon as you hit record.'
Isn't it he means above. Perhaps I am mistaken, I don' t know.
AFAIK, Phillip Bloom briefly reported HDMI out functionality. 1080 is progressive at 24 fps in Cinema Mode. Interlaced in other 1080 modes. No 25p. Remember, this is an early prototype, which he returned back to Panasonic.

The fly on the wall at Panasonic HQ in London reported the following conversation:
[PA] How did you like it, Phillip-san?
[PB] This prototype has no 25p!!!
[PA] Who needs that stuttery relic anyway?
[PB] Grrrrr ....
[PA] Yes, we understand some other Europeans are upset. We watched some Youtube videos.
[PB] Just fix it and give me something else to play with. I have some fine Cubans to smoke :)

FWIW, according to Wikipedia article the most compressed HDMI format is 8-bit 4:2:2

I don't know about the GH2, but from what I'm reading the AF100 will output uncompressed 4:2:2 from both the HDMI and HD-SDI ports. Only difference between the two is that the SDI includes timecode.

I haven't had time to read the Wikipedia article, just going by informed sources in the AF100 forum and assuming "uncompressed" means uncompressed. Maybe there are technical variances - I don't know and probably am not smart enough to understand it anyway, if that's the case.

IF you can do HDMI uncompressed out of the GH2 - theoretically, how high can you go? (according to Wiki max HDMI is pretty high)

I mean before the avchd encode. For sure everything other than full raw footage is compress in some way or the other. The thing is that this output would be better than any Avchd bitrate, be it standard ones or from a hack.

In my mind, chroma sub-sampling (4:2:2) is a form of compression. Additionally, the "sensor signal", what you get in a RAW file is 12-bit, so will [likely] get down-sampled to 8-bit. So, yes, compared to AVCHD, HDMI out has no AVC-codec compression applied and is less compressed chroma-wise, but it is far from being "an uncompressed" output.

Just keep in mind that many people can get you wrong if you tell them "compressed" meaning this.
This is just uncompressed signal with reduced color resolution.

As for RAW, only specialised cinema oriented cameras use RAW (or specially compressed RAW-like) formats.
You can't sell such equipment today to wide market of ordinary customers.
