GH2 official discussion thread

Okay, now we'll go further into this. is it "even in theory possible"? Yes, it's possible. Reel-Stream did this kind of thing with the Andromeda.

Will it happen? No it will not happen. Nobody's going to go hacking apart a $900 still camera to attach custom-made hardware directly to the chip.

If you want 1080/50p and/or 1080/60p, you'd be infinitely better off getting a camera that supports it, such as the TM700 or the AF100 (which doesn't direclty support 1080/50p playback, but can be made to do so).

Thanks for the info. I was using the GH1 hack's ability to remove the interlace wrapper as a reference and was thinking something similar could be done with the GH2. I wasn't thinking that it would require extra hardware. I guess I'll just have to follow the market for now.

Something similar was done with the Native 24P hack. It resulted in something that is usable but not stable.

I see, I wasn't aware that it was unstable, thanks for letting me know!

There isn't much that can be done at this point because the code cannot be hacked further without much more information about the source. It's possible that IF the code were hackable, that over time, Vitaliy could figure out a way to get the raw 50p out before interlacing, however it *could* also be of unknown quality since the post processing could be done on the interlaced data, or any number of strange things could be happening.
Ok, apparently the in camera processing isn't as straightforward as I thought, i.e. sensor output -> add wrapper = output. This is pretty much the kind of answer I was looking for!

it would be just like the start of the GH1 hack project was. Just a project to see if it's even possible to do stuff with the code. If something cool happens, then great, but let's not hold our breath.
Now I have a better picture what is going on. Thanks for all your help, very nice :)

How in the world did that statement clear everything up for you? Now, you are just trying to make it look like you got the answer you were looking for.

You seem so defiant in what you know is possible. Why do you need any of our speculation? Why don't you just go try it yourself? Oh that is right you don't have the camera just like the rest of us don't!

It is obvious from your posts that you haven't learned anything today.

You asked a question to which everyone else has responded "No one knows the answer to that question". And yet you insist it can be done and you just want someone to acknowledge that you are right.

I don't know why I waste my time.. I did NOT insist it can be done, I insisted it has got to be known at least to some extent, and as it turns out I was right.

Someone, basically says "Anything is possible" and you accept that as the answer to the ultimate question? You are daft, aren't you?
Why don't you go read Svart's 2 replies, I think that's a bit more than "anything is possible", that was pretty much what I wanted to know. Also in Barry's last post there was good information. I think you are pretty much the only one who didn't even try to be helpful.

I fully understand your question but the answer is still the same. No one knows what things Panasonic has done to prevent us from capturing the data before it gets interlaced because no one has a camera with the final firmware yet.
Yes, well it seems I was looking for a deeper insight than "no one knows". The GH1 was hacked so of course the people involved here "know" how these things work inside the cameras.

As for tcglog question.
It had been answered at least two times in this thread :-)

I have been following this thread from the beginning but don't recall that. Maybe I just don't remember. Now from these replies it seems evident that it is very unlikely to get at least stable 50/60p @1080p from the GH2, how disappointing.

No, the problem is that you still havent understood my question and that is why you think I didn't get my answer. It wasn't that single statement, it was everything he wrote (why do I need to explain this, I have more important things to do).

You seem so defiant in what you know is possible. Why do you need any of our speculation?
And why are you wasting my time when you so clearly should be wasting yours trying to understand what I was asking. Here you think I have claimed that I know it is possible to implement 1080p50. Where have I done that? Please let me know? Or at least try to be less ignorant.

Why don't you just go try it yourself?
Oh that is right you don't have the camera just like the rest of us don't!
Yes, and also have no knowledge in hacking a camera in general. What this has to do with anything regarding this case is beyond me.

It is obvious from your posts that you haven't learned anything today.
To me it is quite obvious that you're still clueless about what I was asking. I actually learned everything I wanted to learn to get an answer to my question.

Since you still seem to be out of it here it is in a nutshell for you (need cliff notes?):

Ok lets put it this way. IF we could hack the code, we still don't have the original source code. It's easy to make changes to values in tables to get things like higher bitrates in the decrypted code but it's very hard to add features that are not already present without the source code. IF the camera is hackable and IF there is a routine that does most of what we want, it MIGHT be possible IF the hardware can support such datarates.

EDIT (I made it yellow so you would notice): And here is my question repeated for you since I'm sure you need it:IF GH2 can someday/somehow be hacked, is it even in theory possible to make an intervention before the data from 50p is lost in transition to 50i

How can you still say I didn't get an answer to this or will you admit you were wrong like adults do? Oh wait...

Yes, in theory (theory!) it's possible. Probable? No, there are too many variables. Now please, stop banging on about it. :)

Hmmm... ETC & fast tv lens. This gets pretty interesting. I had thought ETC would introduce higher noise level. I'm glad I'm wrong in this case. What are good models for fast tv lenses? Canon and Fujinon? ENG lenses are expensive. Will those for 1/2" sensor show no vignetting with GH2's ETC feature?

Yes, guys, can you please move the discussion about the meaning of probabilities, learning, understanding/misunderstanding and reading tea leaves into the Cafe DivxUser forum or into Private Messaging? Thanks.

I, presonally, do not understand all this "give us noise free ISO 3200" thing. If you are shooting even at ISO 800 and could use extra lighting instead, you are idiot.

I've been shooting with ISO 800 with the GH1 most of the time this year because I was shooting indoors and needed a quite large DOF so I had to shoot in f8, f10. That's with 4 big kinoflo like fluo heads. Not everybody wants to shoot with superthin DOF.

Yes, it is major concern. This is extremely important to them.
Generally, I don't have problems to come to an agreement about this. They know it.

If Panasonic wanted to do what is best for them and us, they would hire you as a product designer engineer. But they are Japanese and Japanese are very proud people. If Panasonic was a German company you would already be working for them probably.

Geez theres alot of blabbering in this thread. I was looking At finding a gh1 and hacking it but now this gh2 is so close. Having hdmi out is really useful. Do u guys figure its better to spend the 500 more and get a gh2? I do need a rock solid camera that can record for hours. I dont know if i trust the hack. At least on the gh1. Im assuming here as well that the gh2 isnt hacked at all. What do guys think?

I'd wait for GH2 reviews. But the GH1 hack can be very stable, it all depends on the configuration used. LPowell's stable settings have been pretty rock solid.

Amen brother,...LOL...It is rather funny how this thread seems to get hijacked into personality clashes...but I remember reading I guess from an admin post about trying to maintain civility ..especially during the launch of new camera models..,, as some people seem to have their winders a bit too tight at this time ....no truer words have been spoken ..

cheers

I've been thinking this ever since I found out about the GH13. "Why hasn't Panasonic been loving this"?...I mean with the hack, Panasonic is the maker of arguably the "best" DSLR for video to date. I'm not saying they should rely on the hack to make their product better but if the hack happens besides the fact. How can that be a bad thing? Products that are open source or even semi-open source are capable of generating huge community bases of dedicated users. Whatever the case I'm sure they have their reasons...What do I know I'm just a "film maker".

Agree,

Customers can and will do whatever they want to your product (like putting it in a blender), 99% of casual users DO NOT read the instruction manual anyway. Even most people installing the hack know what they are doing, Panasonic still benefit from the hack because:

1 If people buy GHs because of the Hack, Panasonic make more sale. And those people became potential customer for Panasonic lenses or even the AF 100.
2 If people screwed up during installation of the hack, then Panasonic get to charge them for reinstalling firmware, making money out of nothing. (or in a more aggressive manner, they will claim that the hack has damage the MB and charge you for a replacement)
3 If the hack improves the performance of the GHs, Panasonic gain popularity in the film making community. And if it makes the GHs worst, then Panasonic can simply blame those hackers.

Either way Panasonic is a winner, it is just impossible to lose. Officially they will not recognize the hack for sure, but I don't think they will be stupid enough to close all the possibility for hacking.

I also agree that in the future Panasonic should really make the GHs more like the i-something, letting people installing apps. That way they get more changes to sell stuffs.

You'd probably get a better response if you stated what you wanted to use the camera for. Any production quality camera can record for hours so if thats your only requirement I'd say your options are pretty open...How can the GH2 be hacked? Its not even out yet...I trust the hack 100% and would gladly buy a qualifying GH1 again right now if I had to make the choice.

I am considering waiting for the GH3 so if you re-read my post I was not with a single word asking WHEN it would be done. I was simply asking if it is even worth to wait for the GH2 hack because I wanted to know if it is likely/unlikely or impossible to add 1080p50.

You are far better off waitng for the GH7 due out in first quarter 2018....it has 1080 @500P FPS and apparently comes pre-hacked so you can increase bit rate to "11".

Well Vitali HAS TO KNOW since he already hacked the GH1.

I think you will find that Vitali did not hack the GH1, he probably started with a firmware update file for the GH1 and from that was able to modify (hack) the update file and then updated a GH1 with that customized firmware.

The reason the recent GH1's can't be hacked is probably that Panasonic modified the firmware in a way that the older (hackable) versions of the firmware can no longer be installed. This most recent version of the GH1 firmware has also not been made available outside the factory and perhaps repair centres, thus, it's not possible to access and hack the new version(s).

We will possibily not see a GH2 firmware file so again, if the file can't be found, it can't be hacked, thus possibly no GH2 hack either.

One possibility is to be able to actually access the data within the firmware chip of an actual camera. This probably requires removing the chip and even then there is no guarantee that the chip can be accessed.

See, it's not a simple task, perhaps now even impossible now that Panasonic wants to protect their cameras from external enhancements. Those of us who have an older GH1 might just be the only ones who can make these changes.

The worst case for us - perhaps Panasonic is certain enough with their software that they no longer use reburnable memory and there is no possibility of ever changing it without actually replacing the chip(s).

No way that the GH2 wont be firmware upgradeable therefore flash memory will be and is a necesity. If we cant have 1080p50/60 from GH2 its no big deal but I think in the main people would like 25p and for the bit rate to be up'd a little in all settings especially 720p. Why they dont just give evey setting a 24mb option and be done with it is just plain stupid, but Panasonic have their reasons and it will be down to protecting their other segments, no doubt about it.

After all is said and done though there is also no doubt I will buy a GH2, but will I offload my GH1, no way.
