GH2 official discussion thread

well said Vitaliy...this is a hoax lets leave it at that...I know some background info on this which I wont go into ...but lets just carry on and not degrade the thread ...

I call BS on all of this. This guy has posted many videos from a GH13 claiming they are from a GH2. He also has many other very questionable videos. I think he is just shopping for hits.

This is exactly the case. There is no way he has a GH2, he's simply fishing for hits/replies/trolling.

Got many raw clips today from GH2 with v0.2 firmware.

Quality is very very good.
ISO 3200 is usable in many situations.
No fixed noise had been spotted.
Encoding is good, it breaks down only in very detailed scenes and if motion is present.

Awesome!

Good news indeed. Is it better than D7000 then?
Do you know if this firmware supports completely clean hdmi output while recording (without the red pilot)?

Thanks for sharing the info

If you want to use camera for video, of course GH2 is better. Even GH1 is better.
But D7000 is big step in right direction for Nikon. Making proper codec.
They prevented changing aperture due to nature of aperture lever. As you'll get clearly distinguished noise if you allow to change it.
And as result - many complains on your support line. So, they are quite smart.

This is the scary part. I hope someone on the inside sends you a copy of the firmware

I don't see anything scary here.
Every AVC codec breaks on such scenes (due to 24Mbit top standard bitrate). As you just need raw bitrate power on them.
Best implementations even in such situations work very good (ala HMC150 and upcoming AF100).

As for firmware. We have some hope :-)
Plus I hope that they'll up bitrate up to 23.4Mbit (I mean pure video bitrate that is at 21.5Mbit mark today).

Phil Bloom is not releasing any footage from his copy apparently.

Phil Bloom says he is not releasing any footage at the moment, says "its too buggy at the moment" on twitter, wonder if he is pre 0.2 then?

I really do not know anything about Philip.
But this is general rule to not release any complains or footage before final release version (until production company want - like in Sony SLT case).

Excellent. I think it is worth buying the GH2 over the GH1 just for ISO 3200 during video vs. the GH1's limit of ISO 1600. One stop could help the 14-140mm a lot in low light situations. Can't wait to see what your thoughts are after you have had a chance to examine the clips more.

In addition, the GH2 has increased lens capabilities compared to the GH1. Mainly regarding AFS - adding many lenses which didn't have it with the GH1. For example, I was going to get the Tokina 11-16, then noticed that the Olympus 11-22 now has AFS (which it didn't before). Couple these expanded lens capabilities with faster autofocus, and the extra tele conversion feature and the GH2 is starting to look real good. Not to even mention what Vitally is now reporting.

Lens capabilities:
GH1 http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/g1.html
GH2 http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/gh2.html

Yes, you brought up a great point. There are some great 4/3s lenses that are now very useful on the GH2. Maybe that is why we haven’t seen any fast glass from Olympus? They are focusing on getting old lenses to work on the new bodies.

However, that doesn’t make any sense at all for Panasonic. Why are they working so hard to get their new cameras to work with their competitor’s glass when they don’t have any equivalent lenses at all?

Vitaliy,

Do you have any Extended tele-conversion samples? I am VERY curious to see how well that mode works. Your opinion on it is always appreciated.

Note, have you all seen the pre-production analysis for the GH2, DR is improved but its not earth shattering better, but the ISO has been "equalised" with normal ratings, we no longer have the under rating of the GH1. So, on GH1 ISO1600 was near to ISO2500 I think, now ISO1600 is near to ISO 1600 or even less. However, ISO 3200 is near to 3200 also so reality is that sensitivity in video is about 1/2 stop better, but as we all know none of us would use ISO1600 in the past anyway.

I don't see where you find "earth shattering" words :-)
Panasonic officially released improvement in still mode and it is no more then 1 stop. Really about 1/2 stop.
But fixed noise removal on video is much more important.
As well as encoder improvements.

I, presonally, do not understand all this "give us noise free ISO 3200" thing.
If you are shooting even at ISO 800 and could use extra lighting instead, you are idiot.

Wait a second. Are you saying we are idiots for not carrying around extra lighting? With a camera that is designed to be as small as possible even at the expense of “some” image quality that just doesn’t seem practical.

Also until we get fast lenses from Panasonic ISO 800 will remain useless indoors unless we are carrying the lighting that you spoke of.
