GH2 official discussion thread

btw,
i can't watch the mp4 file on my pc: quicktime, vlc, and free mp4 player won't play...
what do you use?
thanks

"Splash Lite" is for free: http://mirillis.com/en/products/splash.html Otherwise I use "Power DVD".

panned this quickly, will have some degree of "flickering"
First I thought it was a quick pan too, but it isnt that quickly. Hopefully, you´re right. As Matthew said, I´ve already noticed it on other footage too. But ok, all the pannings have been pretty fast... Perhaps, its not worth to make a great fuss about it but if this is happening all the time during pannings it would disturb me...

Tried a few players only one that worked was K-lite codec pack "Splash Lite" is for free: [URL said:

I am not sure that I want to really discuss material where someone takes one lousy shot waving the camera from a window down onto a run-down tourist place and shout's "my pre-production-GH2 did lay a golden egg".

I am very critical of some of Panasonic's probable decisions about the GH2 if it really should come with the specs as recently advertised...... but really, somebody give us a break, please: This comes down as having the same predictive qualities as reading the innards of a dead fish.
Good point, tipota. Same goes for the other clip (posted by Quesabesde). Shot in 1080/50i, cut and exported as 25p. Good God!!! Results -- if I was seeing this footage as an "advanced p&s shooter" looking to "upgrade to an DSLR" (having not gotten on the bandwagon with GH1) I would steer clear into Canons welcoming arms.

Yeah.... I wonder how all this mysterious figures get their hands on "pre-production" cams and how people who have such secret and wondrous ways to get the holy grail - with help and allowance by Panasonic, without doubt - have at the same time not very much ability to shoot something meaningful.

If this guys really got GH2's before even Bloom has gotten his (he has it by now, he writes) then something in the kingdom of Panasonica would be really very weird.... the word "fake" rings through my head.... ;-)

interesting...
so why faking it?
just to boost the AF-100?
and even without 25p? ;)

You better stop unfounded speculations.
Most guys who have GH2 are reviewers of some kind or sellers representatives.

Btw. first raw D7000 footage is now available.

With quite good surprises.
It seems that it has full H264 codec.
With B frames, CABAC, and 24.5Mbit bitrate.
Generally, from encoder standpoint it is better than top GH2 mode :-)
May be this will be another reason for Panasonic managment to add special setting for filmmakers. We'll see.

what does a full h.264 codec means?
vs the t2i etc?

S which is now offline and not available any more.
There was written, that there are 2 possibilities:

We will see, once the GH2 is available and real life test can be made.
http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh2/movie.html

Still Picture Priorities
Images will be recorded with the set picture size and quality.
Up to 8 still images can be recorded in movie recording.
The screen will go dark while recording images. A still image will be recorded in the motion image during that period, and audio is not recorded.
Motion Picture Priorities
Images will be recorded with a picture size of (2M). The image quality may be different to (2 M) of standard images.
Up to 30 still images can be recorded in movie recording.
Only JPEG images are recorded when quality is set to RAW+Fine, RAW+Standard or RAW. (When set to RAW, still images will be recorded in quality of Fine.)

AND

In addition, you can copy a number of frames during playback of an HD movie to produce high-quality photos thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology.

It means proper AVCHD implementation...with no workarounds. Higher efficiency codec than basically ALL of the DSLRs so far which would make its image more robust or more predictably good (if shot with care....as usual). It's basically equivalent to standard camcorders implementation.

Honestly,

I've come across a lot of people with weird manners in the internet over the years, people who want to be interesting at any cost, people who are lonesome and want some attention.... whatever.

Supposed this is material from a pre-production GH2 - what would it tell us? That Panasonic hands out this camera in a stage that is extremely dangerous for a company to people who shoot wild amateur-stuff and silly water-birds and cars driving by and the lobby of a wanna-be posh hotel? Really? Would people who go down to the river and chase water birds or hold the camera out of a window and not try to shoot something more meaningful like Dale did? Even only a grey scale card?

So we have only two possibilities left, imho: Either Panasonic just produced a major public relation f**k-up and should fire - along with the people who had the idea of not implementing 25 p in 1080 HD - the people responsible for this. Or the people posting this crap are show-offs.

Apart from that: This material, along with the material from the Photokina - which is GH2 for sure - does not tell us much. So let's wait until somebody a bit more professional get's his hands on the cam under more telling circumstances as a trade fair booth equipped with shrill models in terrible outfits and make up and lighting can do. And believe me: Hesitation is normally not my second name.... ;-)

Sometimes footage like the ones shot by Tan Kin Hor can be more telling and meaningful than stuff shot by a professional filmmaker. The latter one will select carefully a few really good shots out of several hundreds. So, for sure, the result will be very clean and worth seeing. I personally do appreciate both...

Could you post links to some of the samples you think are the best? I do wish they had a 720p @ 60 FPS on the D7000. That and the extended teleconversion feature are the only reasons I am going with the GH2.

Might be this (scroll down to the link to the mov file (the mediafire one))... http://vimeo.com/15859118
I think we should all venture out of our little GH1 forum sandbox once in a while ;) There is a thread over in D90 forum

Wow strong D7000!

So what does the GH2 lack from being full H.264 and camcorder equivalent? CABAC and... what else?

So regarding codecs the D7000 is now #1 ?

What's the best? Somebody taking the camera out in the real world and showing it off warts and all, or the other guy who takes the camera out on a Zoolander style road trip and then edits out all the bad bits?
