GH2 official discussion thread

Some really outstanding high ISO image samples here. If the GH2 ISO 3200 is really usable for video as opposed to the GH1's limit of ISO 1600 then the zoom lenses might actually become interesting despite their small apertures.

Wonder if the GH2 will have the GH1 low light trick to get 6400iso.

Does anyone know if the teleconversion function simply makes your lens longer, as in turning a 14mm-42mm into a 28mm-84mm, or can you start at 14mm and then zoom all the way to 84mm in a continuous shot? Seems unlikely that you could do that....

Thanks so much, Philip, for checking this & publishing your results thus far.

I know you're dealing with the home remodel contractor from hell right now, but when you have time (and after you've had some sleep!):

My questions are:

1. Does the GH2 live HDMI output have a "regular" framerate (no dropped frames or non-standard pulldown pattern), both during live preview & when cam is in record mode?

2. Does the GH2 live HDMI output have copy protection enabled to prevent it from being recorded by an external device?

3. When the GH2 is in record mode, and it puts the record symbol & numeric timer on-screen, are they close enough to the top & bottom edge to allow cropping the video to something like 14:9 or 2.35:1, etc. in post?

4. Does the GH2 live HDMI output include camera audio? If so, does it sound relatively clean?

5. A different audio question: Does the GH2's USB/AV connector output live audio when the cam is in preview or record mode? On my GH1 I can connect my Sennheiser headphones to the USB/AV connector via adapters to listen to audio when the cam is in playback mode only. But, can the GH2 do this during live preview or recording?

Thanks in advance for your efforts!

Ugh, what an abomination. Hopefully, that gets "fixed" in final firmware with an option to turn all non-image output in HDMI off.

He mentioned in the post that live view HDMI mode is 1080/50i, presumably the real interlaced kind, not 25PsF. During recording (in Cinema Mode?) the mode is proper 1080/24p. No funny wrappers, just funny artifacts.

3. When the GH2 is in record mode, and it puts the record symbol & numeric timer on-screen, are they close enough to the top & bottom edge to allow cropping the video to something like 14:9 or 2.35:1, etc. in post?

Nah, because to go from 42 to 43 the lens would have instantly widen to 21.5mm, which obviously isn't gonna happen.

On a c-mount or similar, you could use the digizoom to cut right into the image circle, and what you got from that should be hypothetically consistent with those lenses' intended focal range (e.g. a standard zoom would still give a range that went from wide to tele-ish.) If I'm thinking right, that is.

Proper resolution and framerate HDMI output is possible only during recording (today they have symbols over it).
In LV mode resolution is not the same (can be slightly better than GH1, but nor FullHD) and framerate is much higher (on GH1 it looks to be 60fps on all regions, on GH2 according to Panasonic data it is 120fps).

Andrew are again in his style. Now he thinks that HDMI output is compressed (i.e. raw->conversion and scaler->avchd compression->avchd decompression->hdmi out :-) ). I laughted for almost 10 minutes :-)
I suggest to provide him GH2 immediately. As I want to know all details of build in micro washing machine that he finds out (put off the lens->add water and washing powder and hanky->put your lens back on->turn on sensor cleaning for 10 minutes->get your lens off->look at your result, only $1000 spend to clean your dear handkerchief :-) ).

Phil,

Once you've sorted out the cowboys, I'd love to know if the 25p is the same as the GH1? ie, not interlaced but full 25 in a 50i stream.
Thanks

Do you know if the ex. tele. conv. has the rec symbol over when shooting?
Otherwise we'll have at least a 2/3" camera without aliasing with all c mount lenses available and the capacity of recording uncompressed 1080 24p video to an atomos ninja (for example).

Even though I hope Panny will fix the rec symbol so we don't have to crop the image in post.

So it has the 25p mode after all?

I've been listening to this whole forum bitching about not having 25p for nothing?!

If you could spare enough time to read the link or what other "bitchers" like me wrote, you would have read the following:

"The Gh2 is very interesting, it’s much improved over the Gh1 but the 24mbs bit rate is only available in 24p mode. The 25p mode is still the inadequate 17mbs mode. I told the guys there today they need to fix that as in Europe we need 25p bit rate equal to the 24mbps."

These are the words of Mr. Bloom. Hope you do not accuse him of "bitching"... ;-). Yes, us poor PAListanis want 25 p with 24 Mps too.

First you all were like "I would get the camera FOR SURE if it only had 25p!!" Now when it turns out it actually HAS 25p everyone is like "who cares, it's not 24mb/s". NOBODY has been complaining about that 17mb/s is not enough for 25p, EVERYBODY has been complaining about the fact that there is no 25p at all. Can't you be happy for once? I don't care about 24p or 25p, I want as much as possible, I want 50p. I worry much more about 50i being only 17mb/s than 25p being only 17mb/s.

I suggest you to stop citing small part written by Philip before he double checks it. With about 90% probability actual footage is 50i.

What obstacles do I get into if I use this 24p-Camcorder in Europe as sole camera (no mixing of footage)?

It depends on how your footage gets distributed; on the web you can use any format/framerate you like, via DVD you can use 24fps, but PAL broadcast is 25fps. You can simply raise speed from 24 to 25fps though, that's how it's usually done.

Hey newbie stop barking. Low bitrate and poor codec were already the main topics when the GH1 just came out. There have been long discussions about what improvements the GH2 should bring and better codec and higher bitrate were two of them. In this context, 17mbs for 25fps is disappointing but Mr Bloom is sorting that out for us now.

So - I haven't seen anything about this...

It is being advertised that the 3d lens is for stills only. Wouldn't you be able to set the camera to "shoot without lens" or whatever it is that the GH1/GH2 says when you connect a non-autofocus lens. Wouldn't it simply create a side-by-side 3d video that would be a button click away from viewable using After Effects, or a final cut plugin like Tim Dashwood's? It would seem strange if Panasonic would completely stop you from using it.

Also Side-by side, is the most usable format, in my opinion, because you can convert it to any display format - anaglyph, checkerboard, interlace...
