GH2 official discussion thread

I am so looking forward to this camera. Can't wait...$900 is a steal as well. ...

I've got the bundle with the plastic 14-42mm zoom on pre-order from Amazon.com. I might use the lens occasionally, especially if the GH2's new ETC feature works well. A steal @ $1K US.

Although I'm hoping there's some chance I'll instead be able to get it at a slight discount thru my wife's employer corporate buy program (as if).

(I already have a hacked GH1 which I'll keep as a B-cam, backup, and for high-motion scenes.)

Vitaliy, If the GH-2 one day is hackable, would you think the 3 core processor and faster SD cards to come could yield higher bitrates? I watched a video explaining how the Apple ProRes in the external HDMI recorder, records at 10 bit 220mbs. So currently, with the GH-1 people are getting in the 80mbs.

Since the GH-2 will have a better sensor, an extra core, and B frames, I find this coming year very interesting.

As has been mentioned too many times before, bitrates aren't the only important thing. I can't stress this enough. Proper codec implementation is more important than bitrate.

GH2 24mbps with full AVC codec implemented will be as good as 50+mbps of GH1.

Quality > quantity everytime.

If we shoot 1/50-1/100 sec shutter in euro

If we shoot 1/50-1/100 sec shutter in euro

with 24p, no flicker right? or wrong?

Also, if they had implemented 50/60p as per TM700 that is 28mbit, in theory 24mb at 24p is much much higher res. if not "temporally" better! However, to go 60p to 24p is a problem as well, right or wrong? So overall the 24p seems a good compromise.. At what rate does the TM700 do 24/25p or does it even offer it?

*Just checked that the TM7 series have 25p in 1080i wrapper ;-) http://panasonic.net/avc/camcorder/hd/hs700_tm700_sd700/feature1.html
at same bit rate spec. as proposed gh2!

TM700, 60p 28Mb/sec can 9.5mins on 2Gb(28Mb/sec), GH2, 24p 24Mb/sec can 10mins on 2Gb(26.66Mb/sec)?
TM700, 24p in 60i 17Mb/sec can 15mins on 2Gb(17.7Mb/sec), GH2, 17Mb/sec can 13mins on 2Gb(20.5Mb/sec)?

Nope. Exactly the other way round: Electric grid runs on 50 Hz in Europe and 60 in the USA. So 25 p fits in perfectly on our side of the pond because you are all the time in sync with the grid.

For tungsten lamps this is no problem anyhow. With other light sources you may run into problems with 24 over here. But normally most metal halide lamps run through their transformers on higher frequencies. Result: You have enough "flickers" for every exposure to get a nearly constant impression.

But you may a) have problems with surroundings where a lot of cheap lamps that run on smaller frequencies or are not stable in their frequency interact - light may start pumping on a fair ground or so with 24.

Also b) you would probably have problems if you would shoot with very high shutter speed, because now the lesser flickers or light impulses you get from the lamp do not iron out the asynchronity enough..... and it starts pumping again.

In conventional film making you adjust the opening of the shutter accordingly if you need to shoot in 24 fps. For European TV with 25 p also in film cameras shutter is set to straight 180 degrees. And you are on the safe side.

One of the reasons I am edgy about the "true cinema" 24 p nonsense of the GH2 in it's current configuration. If somebody can correct me on this I would be happy - maybe the sensor reads out on a different speed or so..... I am distinctively "old school".... ;-)

You nailed it Tipota. This is the other reason why no 25P/50P is tantamount to criminal neglect IMO if the specs of the GH2 are to be believed.

The first priority being we need a PAL progressive frame rate for broadcast work. Die interlace die!!!!

The 30 minutes PAL Europe limit is stil on for GH2.

Here is a quote from the Panasonic Web Site.

*1 Motion images can be recorded continuously for up to 29 min 59 sec in European PAL areas. *2 Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) movies are recorded at 60i (NTSC) /50i (PAL). HD (1,280 x 720) movies are output and recorded by the image sensor at 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL). *3 QuickTime Motion JPEG. Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording Motion JPEG. Remaining time for continuous recording is displayed on the screen. *4 Approx. The length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card. • Use a card with SD Speed Class* with "Class 4" or higher.

And: I wonder what will happen if you shoot a tv screen or monitor with 24p while you are in 50Hz lands....

In some respect they seem to have downgraded the GH2 from playful tool to very nice toy. Not very clever. If the camera loses it's "aura" as the little wonder-machine it had with the GH1 (and Vitaly ;-)), it will lose costumers too. But I guess they may not care because "we" are not so many.

I'll find out anyway as am going to shoot

I'll find out anyway as am going to shoot

my TV etc tonight in 24p, the latest hack allows you to change video from pal/ntsc via the video o/p setting I think, so I'll give it a whirl, am interested to see the difference between 24p and 25p in pal world from a flicker perspective.

For me the 30 minute restriction isn't a big deal.
I just shot AVCHD PAL on an American trip with 60fps and didn't notice any flicker yet, not even when shooting computer monitors.
I think PAL users should be treated as seriously as NTSC users, treated fairly.

PAL is not what will produce flickers, it's the frame rate: If you run your camera with 60 fps, you will be in-sync with the American grid. If you run 25 or 50 fps which is the usual frame rate over here and usually used in PAL you may - enhance "may" as usually light sources will give you enough flickers to iron out pumping - start having such problems. The same should be true with a-sync of frame rate and grid frequency when shooting with very fast shutter speed.

Whoever can explain why this should be other wise because the sensor or whatever does any incredible stunt that "old school" guys like me don't get: I am happy to get corrected on this issue.

"We" are more upset that with only 24p we can a) not intercut material we have shot with other 25 p cameras without having some sync problems and b) therefore could not use the GH1(3) as second camera with the GH2 and c) run into problems when we want to give material in 25 p to costumers or want to bring it into a line to any tv productions.

Now, I accept that Panasonic may argue: If you want this, buy or rent an AG-AF 101. Fine. In theory that's okay. But what the GH2 also loses for us poor "Aborigines of PAListan" besides from what I wrote before, is also it's ability to be what for a painter was a sketch-book or a collectors box for a sculptor. It's small, it's light, you can take it with you wherever you go and collect stuff in a discreet way "on the run" that you can throw into a 25 p world without problems.

And why the other modes are 60 i/50 i and only 17 Mps is another led-down.

Again, i think no 25p is an impetus for either Panasonic to release an updated firmware, Or put a strong reason for Vitaliy or other programmer to bypass any firmware "lock" and get us all to the pot of gold. sooner than later. Clearly the hardware can output 25p. Its just crippled. And then we'll have our 100 mbs 25p capture;-)

Yes, but I would not take this too serious.
He must have had a pre-Photokina version of the GH2.

Even on the Photokina for example HDMI out was working. One could see it in the life demonstrations there. So I think the GH2 will be better than the version he had.

Maybe if Panasonic have loaned him a GH2

Maybe if Panasonic have loaned him a GH2

its an indication of the situation? seriously I think the whole site is tongue in cheeck, nothing too serious, at least I hope not. He's probably a nice guy

No way he has a GH2. LOL @ "We flew Airsprint from Toronto to Calgary then onto Vancouver."... he lives in, or around, Calgary.

He got you hook line & sinker.

This guy is an ass. I doubt he tried a GH-2. I can attest that I met Philip Bloom this month in LA, and he was great. He loves the Gh-1 hacked as well as his Canons. And he's not trying to push gear on people as this scarlet guy says on his blog. I know from Bloom, that the Panny guys who hired him to shoot the Joshua Tree short with the first GH-1, asked him to shoot something for the GH-2. When he gets back from his journey around the states. Ask yourself why Panasonic would give this camera to this Bozo, to test, but not Bloom first? Bloom would blow our socks off with a video. So far all the videos supposedly from the GH-2 look like sh*t. Not because of the camera, because these camera guys don't have a clue what they are doing. They might know all the specks and menu setting, but just look at their drivel on vimeo or youtube.
