GH2 official discussion thread

Almost all modern 2/3" lenses were made for 3 CCD's through prism blocks. While you could probably get half decent images from them, it would be better to use 16mm or Super 16mm glass which is meant for a single film plane through air, and so those film lenses would be better for bayer pattern single chip cameras.

May be.
But I don't know why 3CCD design can be so bad.
Prisms only slpits light to three colors, and nothing more.
I don't see anything wrong with my Canon B4 2/3" zoom other than heavy vingetting (as it has no 2 extender).

Apologies for this noob question ...

But would I be able to successfully use a high quality Fujinon 1/3 Type C-mount lens (5.5 to 77 mm) lens with the GH2 -- or would it not be worth the effort?

Thanks

Believe what you want.

My question is what added functionality does 1.34 provide over 1.32? Why will Panasonic not answer my questions about why 1.34 was put on the last production batch but is not available to anyone...even my friend a professional, "official" Panasonic camera repairer can't get it.

Coincidence? Purpose?

I am totally with you.
I was just quoting a guy from a german forum, who said something like that came from Vitaliy.

I also find it disturbing.

Also, in Germany there is already a test of the GH2. they got the model 2 eeks earlier. There they quote the japanese "chief developer" of th GH2, that with the GH13 many processor died because of overheating.

Well, I have never heard anything about this in any forum from anybody, who used a GH13.

So not everything one reads is to believe..... Of course

Yeah, tragedy :-)
I think they mean that many of their overpriced batteries died due to overheating in storehouse.
I hope that few Europian managers who make all this 30min stuff had been with them at the moment.
But I am not sure looking at GH2 restrictions :-)

P.S. I suggest you to watch Idocracy and compare this words with quotes from this film. Seems like perfact match.

2/3" chip diagonal is 11mm
1/2" chip diagonal is 8mm
1/3" chip diagonal is 6mm

If all our speculations will be confirmed, the GH2 sensor in video crop mode become a virtual 8mm chip, and could accomodate all 2/3 and 1/2 broadcast and professional video lenses without vignetting.

As for 1/3", consiidering the smaller image circle coverage is likely to expect some vignetting.

I have tried an old Fujinon A7x7 (1982 ca.) on my DY90, and it performed better than my modern Fujinon with aspherical elements.
It was developed and optimized to work with old tube cameras, and I have heard all sort of nasty stories about using this kind of lens on modern ccd cameras...

Thanks for that. I assume that vignetting would be apparent throughout the entire zoom range. Is that correct?

1/2" looks to be fine, yeah. But tests must be perfomed.
Normally, 2/3" glass is simply of higher quality.
Unfortunately you won't get wide angle with 2/3" lenses in 1:1 mode.

If chinese guys make cheap B4 to m43 converter I expect that cheap 1/2" and 2/3" zooms will be exterminated on ebay.
It is very high quality glass in most cases.
And as a bonus you got motorized control (add used electronic lens remote and you'll have FF with zoom control having few preset positions).

Differences between 1/2" and 1/3" are substantials (about 1.33x factor).
But I think we need to see some user test to be sure.

The bigger file (500mb) will be online tomorrow...

As promised the upload of the bigger file (520MB) is running. It will take about 3 hours. - Hopefully the strong banding and flickering is caused by a "lemon-camera" or a software issue and pana is able to fix it. Please not a similar procedure as with the gh1 - lowlight-streaks (fpn) and mud. Nevertheless, someone treated the first clip with neat video and got a lot better result. Take a look:

Btw: this time you´ll get an extra download link to a file hoster...

Isn't it better to privide link here, instead at some "password protected" vimeo page?
Plus I really suggest you to use torrent for such large files.

P.S. And, please do not cite large images or player, ok?

GH2 mjpeg sample?

GH2 mjpeg sample?

Looks like a mjpeg sample upload too, compare that to the nx10 from Samsung ;-)

Just downloading the original file now to take a look. Is it because these cams are ntsc and being used in europe that we are getting the flickering?

I think you are a bit rude to the poster who has tried honestly to provide something which is very rare now, which are GH2 footage for us all to see. I guess we will all be laughing in one month time on these show floor footage but now everything counts and we don' t know how the poster internet connection, computer, etc... work, so if he finds it is the fastest way to send it, then be it, we should be grateful of his effort.

OK.
But this footage is intended for many people to watch and explore.
This means - easy to get and working fast.
Torrent is best solution. Or link to good file hosting, as second one.

About the crop mode.. would the aperture stay the same even when the 2.6-3.9 "zoom" is applied?

Would we be able to use a motorized 2/3" or 1/3" zoom lens? Where would it get the required power?

edit: also what does the possible hacking of GH2 depend on? Panasonic releasing a new firmware?
