GH2 - isn't sharpness too strong ??

man!!! its THE killer gh2 feature :). the ETC "digital" zoom.
i dont own a gh2 so i dont know how to set it up...i think u can set it to one of the custom buttons if u dont find it anywhere else.

looked at dpreview its called :

External Teleconverter

in

FN button set

maybe make sure the:

i.Resolution

is set to off too

or "EX tele conv" to on in the red movie menu option(motion picture) (according to dpreview)...3rd page

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmcgh2/page7.asp

the point is that ETC mode records video without downscaling the footage (and maybe without adding downscaling sharpening artifacts?). i guess to make a valid test u have to move back to get similar framing on the scene aswell.

Ok I just tried, 2x is a crop of the full sensor captured image, so it results pixeled and even more aliased, worst at 4X. Not really a killer feature, it's very bad actually.
It's not possible to turn sharpening OFF.

EX tele conv ON has no aliasing problems, nice thanks for telling me about this feature.. I didn't know it yet.

Have you tried shooting with everything set to -2, except for color saturation ?

Sharpness -2
Contrast -2
Noise Reduction - 2
Color Saturation 0

Are you talking about E-T-C,i find it very poor and it adds a lot of noise to the picture,in 24P and 1080i it give 2.6x extra zoom and 3.9 in 720P mode, usefull for extra close ups when the extra noise can be put up with.

I find the image much better (no aliasing moirè) but yes the crop factor is very limiting, especially in my case where 90% of my jobs are wide views of interiors..

Once (if ever) Panasonic releases a firmware update and it gets hacked with higher bitrates most of these artifacting problems should go away. But really, the sensor is razor sharp + the 14-140 lens too, it tends to have a very video-isch sharpness in itself.

Also i think the not-so-discrete banding makes things worse, all the fine gradients are crushed & mauled and the poor 8-bits can't keep up with all the sharpness and resolution going on.

Either use softer lenses or filters, basicly. Or...... get a Canon ;o)

Martin my complain is more about the digital sharpening applied at the raw image, I don't like those dark halos around bright subjects and bright halos around dark objects.. these artifacts are way too visible and they makes aliasing even more disturbing.

About banding.. you're right, that's also very disturbing, let's hope for some extra mpbs....

edit.. I remember what Ansel Adams said..: There's nothing worse than a sharp image of a blurry concept... Panasonic should help us in the first part of this sentence..
