GH2 - isn't sharpness too strong ??

Even if I set sharpness at -2 it looks too sharp to me, it makes some sharp details that flicker a bit when you start to pan the camera, especially on small backlit details such as trees..

Is there any solution ?
Do you see the same issue ?

Thanks

edit: with "too sharp" I mean digital sharpening artifacts visible and not just sharp. Clean detailed sharpness is a good thing !.

If i said that they would say i have bought the wrong camera, the GH2s resolution /sharpness is a strong point for me.

I love the sharpness of the GH2, what I don't like is how it flickers when you pan and that is not possible to turn it off to avoid digital sharpening artifacts

I hope if they hack the firmware they will add higher mbps and sharpening Off option... then it's a perfect cam

DO you film in 24P as we are in pal area i find panning with 24P can cause the effect you describe that is why i only use 24P with a tripod and pan very little otherwise i use 720P which still has good resolution.

I'm not referring at the progressive filming strobing that is normal in progressive mode, I'm referring to just the super bright details in contrast with darks.. they are over sharpened in static shots but when you move the camera there is a loss of details and the bright area become less bright and sharp so that shows a kind of flickering that could be greatly or totally reduced if we could turn off digital sharpening completely. In Nikon cameras there is the same issue, but you can set digital sharpening to zero and then it's ok. GH2 only offers -2 to +2 but it's always ON, and even at -2 it creates strong sharpening artifacts (visible if you zoom 400% a screenshot of the video in photoshop)

They just need to add a On/Off sharpening option in the next firmware imho.

Oh i dont care for interlaced on the GH2 or any cam thats personal choice mind you but i dont get flicker with 720P which is as sharp as 1080i in the tests i have done.

dude the gh2 sensor is smaller than the 5dmakrk - so the shallow shallow dof is not as agressive as 5dmark2. Can you please state the lens which you are using and the settings?
also please upload the video into vimeo.

It kinds worries me that the 1080p footage from GH2 has more sharpness (even on -2) and detail than all of the 1080p downsampled Red Epic footage which is currently online. Why is that? GH2 downsamples from 16 M chip but Epic does a 13,8 MP raw. All things being equal the differences should not be so big.

So maybe it's just in the downsampling algorithm between the one on the GH2's firmware VS the downsampling algorithm in the composition app they used for the Epic footage?? (or just the codec the Epic users used??)

you're confusing DOF with sharpness, I'm talking about Digital Sharpening filter and the possibility to reduce it or turn it off completely.

Matthew, adding blur is not the same thing than having a sharp image without digital sharpening filter applied, if you apply a blur on a sharpening artifact you will have a blurred artifact and not the removing of it.

Infaltionary, it's just that GH2 has digital shapening set too high even at minimum, it's a fake sharpness, not true sharpness captured by the sensor and encoded as is.

yes but that's not a solution, sharpness can be a very good friend when you need it, my problem is with the artifacts of digital sharpness, not with lens sharpness.

That flicker is most likely aliasing. Cameras resolving true detail and not aliased detail don't flicker.

anybody try to do a "crop mode" camera pan vs "normal mode" camera pan to see if it is the scaling-sharpening algorithm that makes the footage stutter? sounds likely to me. also did u disable the AI sharpening (or what its called)?

would be nice to see clips from:
1. AF100
2. gh2"crop mode"
3. gh2 "normal mode"

camera pan on the same scene. (similar to the forest snow scene we saw before)

AI sharpening is something i have not touched on my GH2,which menu setting has to be found for the on off of the setting.
