GH2 GH2...is 1080i? No 1080p?

I"m confused, I just got my GH2 yesterday and thought it shot 1080p 24fps....but the only option I see is 1080i. So I have to deinterlace my footage first?

I use Premiere Pro CS5.5 btw.

For AVC-HD it shoots 1080p @ 24 FPS, 1080p @ 30 FPS(25 FPS in PAL land) with the v1.1 firmware, 720p @ 60 FPS, true 1080i/60(needs to be deinterlaced, and other SD resolutions.

I can shoot 720p60 on 1.0 firmware. And what do you mean by needing to deinterlace 1080i60? Isn't the point of shooting 1080i60 to get interlace in the first place?

The GH1 and GH2 shoot in 24p but encode that in a 60i "wrapper" that needs to be unwrapped in post.

The hacked firmware can supposedly work around this, but there are reportedly some stability issues when that is enabled (the 24p native part, not necc. the hack as a whole), so I haven't tried that with my GH1.

The GH2 creates a native 24p file, no unwrapping is necessary. The GH1 wraps the 24p footage in a 60i file container. In either case, no deinterlacing is necessary, but the GH1 files may need to be transcoded or unwrapped to a native 24p file if the NLE you're using doesn't handle the native files properly. As noted, a hacked GH1 can be setup to create native 24p files.

That's the thing though, the only 1080 24fps option I have is 1080i 24fps, which means its not native? Its one of the pet peeves I had with my GH1 (besides Panasonic's terrible warranty program). I guess I have to update the firmware.

Also, I've been spoiled by native editing Canon DSLR footage so I may have "deinterlacing" and "unwrapping" terminology wrong and have been using it interchangeably.

No one ever would shoot interlaced intentionally. The only reason to shoot interlaced is because someone else can't utilize your footage unless it is interlaced.

Until the 1.1 update i filmed with 50i with my GH2 and it was FINE now with the 25P in a wrapper available i use that because its even better and sharper,24P ugh not for me.

Where are you seeing 1080i 24fps? Regarding 1080, it's either 24p (progressive) or 60i (interlaced)-- no other combinations. If you've selected "24P Cinema" from the menu and you see "24H" (or "24L") on the display, then you're shooting 24P, otherwise the 1080 mode will record in 60i.

Simple as that.

Version 1.1 adds 1080p @ 30 FPS in a 1080i container. Therefore, technically there are 2 1080i modes with the new firmware.

Yes, though OP indicated he had not yet updated to 1.1 firmware, so the information was in reference to 1.0 firmware, rather than confuse him further with features/modes that aren't even available on his camera.
