GH2 external monitoring not working?

Hi!
My GH2 only outputs a HDMI signal when I'm in the playback mode and then when I go out of it the external screen goes black again.
Anyone had the same issue or know what I'm doing wrong?

Welcome to the forum Erik. Let us know what your monitor brand is and what resolution. This should be an automatic thing that requires no real setup. Have you tried it on a different monitor/LCD? Perhaps it may be that your LCD is failing to do a proper HDMI handshake. Happens with some devices though is rare. The GH1 outputs in playback mode only and the exciting addition to the GH2 was the ability to monitor so this is not right.

Another thing to try - set the HDMI output mode to Auto in the menu settings. If that fails then scroll through the others i.e 1920 X 1080, 720p etc

Also perhaps press the shutter button halfway in live mode.

Lastly and I feel silly to suggest this but some folks have done it before - make sure the lens cap is not on the lens. Apart from that - I have run out of ideas.

I have the same problem with my Totevision 703HD Monitor and the GH2 - I have a picture in "play" modus but no signal during recording. I tried every possible adjustment and I am rather sure that I havent overlooked something.
When I connect the GH2 direct via HDMI to my TV , it works. The Totevision people said, it must be a problem of the camera, when other cameras work fine with it and my 5D MKII works fine with the monitor.
If anybody has an idea which is better tha the forgotten lens cap - let me know please :-)

Thanks for the suggestions henryolonga but seems to be same problem as benn has...tried two different monitors but same thing happens.
benn: does your gh2 work with any monitor?

You're not using 1:1 pixel crop are you? HDMI disabled during recording on that setting...

No, I dont use the 1.1 and Eric, I have only my TV to try it and there the GH2 is showing a pincture.

I have monitored the GH2 with a cheap Lilliput and it works. I now have the DP6 by SmallHD and it outputs the signal just fine. The picture quality of the HDMI out in my DP6 looks outstanding. I leave the HDMI out in the GH2 in auto, and have had no problem with video out in preview, rec, and playback modes.

But as I said: The Totevision 703HD monitor is working with my 5D MKII very well, but not with the GH2. I tried it with HDMI on auto, 720p and 1080 but no succes.
Has anybody an idea what we are doing wrong? (Except buying an other monitor)

Hi,
I'm having this same problem with HDMI output. It'll play back fine but no live monitor while shooting. different monitors same issue. If anyone knows what's going on here please let me know. Thanks, Erik

Seems pretty random. My TV cuts the feed when moving the camera.... nope, not the cables. Could use a firmware update, or two...

Hi people,

I have a similar problem, I want to view video signal un realtime using the classic AV out, not HDMI, it looks not possible, am I wrong?

How to use the standard AV cable?!?

It looks to be used only to play recorded stuff but not to send out the realtime signal.

Please help!

This problem might be related to the random cadence in the HDMI stream which has been observed in the GH2 output. The consensus opinion about this seems to be that it is a deliberate bug introduced by Panasonic to make the stream unrecordable, but still visible on most monitors.

I have had occasional "no go" HDMI. It can be picky about what you have set the monitor to, as well as the GH2 output.
Try changing the hookup order. Turn the camera off, monitor off, connect cable, monitor on, camera on, and so on. Sometimes the connection gets scrambled and you have to power everything off and try again.
It is slightly buggy, but usually works after a couple of reboots.

did you ever manage to sort this out? i have a cheapo monitor that came with my jib but it won't show a live feed, only playback which is very odd. The monitor is super low res and I'm thinking it's too much for the monitor to handle which is low res shitty sd as best.

I have a 5in Marshell and a GH2. I have picture in record but only a still of the recording shows up in playback. I have tried auto and the rest and all the monitor setting listed. Still no playback. Ideas? thanks, Rj

Same problem. This is crap Panasonic. I just spent $600 to use this for a shoot where we absolutely have to be able to monitor puppets and bought this because it says it will hook up to an external monitor. Here comes your camera back!

Plus, I just spent the last three days trying to figure this problem out. Now I have to go RENT a camera for our shoot. How about you make THIS thread a sticky if this is a known problem with the GH2?

All of my sync problems went away when I started using the HDMI cable that came with my Canon camcorder. However, this could still be kind of random, and I suppose it could be something else, but right now my best guess is the signal stability of the cable is certainly a factor.
