GH2 display changes when I hit record... why?

So when I hit record on my GH2 I notice a slight green shift/gamma shift. After hitting stop, the image goes back to "normal" - This is observable on a SmallHD DP6 monitor as well. What gives? What's this issue?

I see the same. There is just a difference in the preview feed vs. the recording feed. Took me a while to get used to the preview because the shadows are very muddy to judge the density and see the off-color look.

So what's being written to the card? The preview feed or the recording feed? The recording feed has a noticeable green cast to it.

The GH2's display when it's in pause mode bears no resemblance to what gets actually recorded. The display during record mode is closer to what actually gets recorded, but still isn't accurate. I did a simultaneous record on the nano through the HDMI, and to the GH2's internal memory card, and found that the color was noticeably different between the two. You cannot see what the GH2's actually going to record by looking at its live output, you can only see it once you've recorded it and played it back.

Yeah that is f up alright, I wish I have done more research before I bought it but for only $700.00 with a lens, I can live with it and will fix in post.

spend a little and get yourself an external monitor, the monitor during record shows you EXACTLY what you are recording. Who uses onboard monitoring anymore?

On my GH2 the display preview and what's recorded are similar in bright light, but the greenish cast takes hold when I up the ISO (despite changing the white balance to account for color temp). External monitor is an inconvenience/liability for the work I do (and where I do it).

I welcome all suggestions on how to compensate.

well, no, actually it doesn't. It is closer to what's being recorded than the paused display is, but it absolutely doesn't match whatthe recorded footage is. I posted a clip on vimeo that shows the difference. The color saturation is the main difference.

so how i must set camera to see what will be recorded? like on canons. is there any chance or i should return gh2?

Wait, you mean I have to mail this crap off, wait for like a week till I can get it back, unless I pay extra for a rush, and then screen it before I can see what I shot? What the hell? Who is going to ever use that?
You guys are crazy, this film concept will never fly.

it isnt only problem of on-board lcd. people say that its not much better with ex. monitor. so it isnt minor issue. for more serious work you need to set colours etc properly and have an idea what will be recorded...

I think you're expecting too much of a $699 consumer stills camera. If you need reliable accurate monitoring you probably should be looking at a regular video camera.

Agree. Yes, there is a color shift... does it make the footage unusable? No. A little color correcting will do wonders. Like any camera, you learn it's quirks and how to deal with them. I've been shooting with the GH2 since they came out, and I've just learned to adjust to the color shifting.

It's $699, and shoots crazy good 1080p video, with some quirks. Take it or leave it :)

Hey Awel,
What's your work-around?

I either light it how I want it to look, accept that it will change during recording, and do some minor CC'ing to get it back to how I want it.

Or, I'll record a few seconds, play it back, and make lighting/white balance adjustments based on what recorded footage looks like.
