GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

the main test should be first to succeed recording the native H24p to 422 res (tested to reliability i hope), and then to test underexposed via the recorder. or both at the same time :)
like Peter, i too don't trust the vimeo link until proven legit.
to be optimistic, when will the Ninja be available?

I think that this is sensor issue, not firmware only.
May be it occurs due to fixed noise removal process.
Bad thing that it is must be also present in all AF100s.

This is unsubstantiated. I would not make a statement like this as if it were fact. I have not seen this on 800 or 1600 iso footage on the AF100. Let's not create FUD.

I think that no one actually saw any AF100 uncompressed footage from production cameras.
So, don't be fast.
All you know is images from 5-6 hand selected cameras.

Check this clip that was shot with the GH2. Focus on the out of focus 60D and the out of focus lens... I have no idea under what conditions this footage was shot but it worries me....

Thanks for this thread - (I think  )

I'm waiting to here from a UK supplier that my GH2 is in stock - I should be getting it on Friday, if all goes well.

Then I read this thread, and it's given me a serious pause for thought.

I'm convinced that later GH1's are better than the first batches. I'm thrilled with the iso1600 performance of my December 09 GH1, and I'm very worried that the GH2 early models might exhibit another banding fault that will be corrected in later cameras.

I remember Vitaly's interview with 43 rumors, in which he spoke of sensor problems with the GH2, and it's hard not to conclude that he was bang on the money.

It's not impossible that Panasonic are currently modifying the GH2 - but were anxious to get some on store shelves in time for Christmas, even if they won't be as good as the ones that follow them. If that's the case, I don't fancy a sub-par camera just to assist their marketing department!

I *really* want that GH2 on Friday - but my common sense is suggesting that I pass it by, and wait to see what happens in the next couple of months.

You'd think that Panasonic would get it right second time around, wouldn't you?

Ok. Sounds like I'm waiting until spring and seeing where this sits then. No problem as I only have $375 for it right now anyway. ;)

Can't say I noticed lines/flickers in Philip Bloom's "Movember Gala Party" video, and that was shot in a wildly variable, mostly dimly lit nightclub environment.
http://vimeo.com/17245744

Sure he used a relatively inexpensive, fast lens, but I don't think it matters. I don't mean to say this line/flicker issue isn't happening, but it doesn't seem to affect every camera or every shooter.

Owners of GH2 cameras with this issue or any other problem should contact Pansonic and ask them to fix it.

People who bought GH2 cameras from outside their region and who have no easy repair/replacement route to Panasonic, you have my sincere sympathy (really), but then again, this _is_ the sort of risk you take in this situation. That might suck, but sorry, that's just the way it is, and generally speaking it's not a situation unique to Panasonic or the GH2. And thank you very much for the heads-up.

Or, if you bought a GH2 with this issue from an authorized Panasonic dealer local to your region who are covered under Panasonic's normal product warranty, contact your dealer and/or Panasonic and ask them to deal with it. Best of luck for a happy outcome.

The lens that Philip used is the Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 and costs $1000

Philip is an accomplished photographer/videographer. You should see his first GH2 video.

This video was also taken with it.
I do not see any banding in this video.

And here is Philip shaving - LOL

I have lost 100% of my faith in Vitaliy. His claims are silly.

Really? - all I know is that he gave me a terrific hack for my GH1 that gives me a high stable bitrate, no timed recording limit, and freedom from Panasonic's rip-off batteries.

He's also done the same for GF1 & G2 owners, and now seems to be working on the Pentax K5.

However, if you've got a less 'silly' mod for my camera, I'll be happy to download it.

I am pretty ok with you losing your faith in me :-)

But all I wrote in this thread is based on actual footage made by predproduction and final production camera.
Horizontal banding problem is not some fantom. It is real.
Panasonic do not want it to be widely mentioned.
It could be fine during predproduction cameras testing.
But it is not ok to keep silence after final cameras are available.

Im a nobody in the camera world, but my question is to which group is this GH2 targeted to and what cameras is it supposed to compete with in the market?
Surely regardless of my knowledge to image artifacts etc. how could this pass the panasonic quality control if it is true that this "banding" is not a result of simple user setting miss?

the joke is on us.. it was discussed that there were similar problems with first shipments of the earlier GH1's. so now it seems they've done it again. call them and ask them why ;)

My own suspicion (and it's no more than that) is that Panasonic are aware of the problem and are attempting to fix it - BUT need to get some cameras on store shelves for the Christmas period.

Hence, they might not be above shipping cameras that they know are not 100%, just to get some sales started, prior to shipments of the 'fixed' cameras.

Of course, I could just be completely paranoid.

One thing, however, that I *am* pretty sure of is that one or two of the 'somebody's' in the amateur video world are so deeply nested inside Panasonic's pocket (or would like to be nested there) that they would still continue to praise the GH2, even if large numbers of them were exploding in the hands of purchasers!

Personally, I trust Vitaly's opinion far more than the opinions of 'celebrities' who enjoy foreign travel junkets and other perks at Panasonic's expense.
