GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

there you go. tried it at 1/50, as this will be my main usage.
there's a line at the lower part of the screen.
so i gather that the Japanese cams have it.

My apologies for being dense, but where is the line? (I'm not saying that it doesn't exist, but that I can't see it.) I imported downloaded and imported it into Premiere CS5 and played on two different monitors. I can't see a line. At what point in the clip is it most evident?

Thanks,

Dan.

Good to hear that i'm not the only one who cant see it on 800. Apart from that, as Vitaly mentioned, no product is perfect.

well, keep being dense :)
at least there's negotiable opinions. i can't really point a specific point on the 3200 clip as i see it down to the 800 clip, but at least YOU cannot see it,
which is sort of an advantage. what monitors do you use? :)

I've seen some comments around the web that this is going to cause the GH2 to be delayed until February or March... I wonder if that's true. Either way... I might just wait a bit and see if this thing clears up. Hopefully just a firmware deal.

thanks so much Sage for advising practically and logically.
i tend to get obsessive and depressed from this s@#$t.
so you're saying that crushing shadows on 800-3200 can work on problematic shots like these ?
(the only reason i bought GH2 is to start shooting an indie film asap, with some natural night shot, and dark indoor activity - so knowing the GH2 can take 1600 rather easily was a main advantage for me)
and i sure hope that Panny would try to minimize this mistake FAST-by any means possible (write this up - Panny agents !)

please tell me some more positive constructive stuff :)

Sure, crushing is a great game plan to save a noisy shot.
Crushing and then raising really put this shot over the top. It eliminated the noisiest areas, replacing them with a clean gray.
Film shows grain throughout the frame and has lower contrast and shadow detail when projected. By altering this very noisy shot, it took on a grungy and mysterious film look, and its subject became more ominous. (video jujitsu!)
Also, if you don't want to see any noise whatsoever, try Neat Video. Its really fantastic noise removal!

I actually like noise, as long as it looks natural as on film.
The problem is how to reduce ugly artifacts like these bending in post

In fact, after studying all the gh2 iso shots I could find, I made the decision last week that ISO 800 would be the highest regular Iso I would shoot on the gh2. After that point, I would try anything - lighting, brighter lens, moving shot - before going up to 1600. And I would never use 3200, no matter what (I've never shot 1600 on my current camera).

Panny should fix this issue before shipping. I don't mind waiting longer. roei, I hope Panny can fix it for you or you have enough money to buy another one later. I can't afford to buy more than one GH2... so I gotta wait and see. Actually this feels worse than GH1 banding issue... cuz they had the time to fix it but missed it... again.

I have a new Samsung 2443 (TN panel) and an old Viewsonic VP201 (IPS panel). I'd love to get a new, better quality video editing monitor, but I already have four monitors (two different 'puters) around my desk and have no place to set it.

Dan.

I feel I should probably jump in here as the footage linked in the original post (http://www.vimeo.com/17281822) is my footage.

The line definitely jumps up and down as you raise or lower the shutter speed. Interestingly enough, it disappears if you should at 1/30th of a second (not ideal, but at this point at least workable), and it also needs to be underexposed for it to be noticable, as other things I've shot in more evenly lit areas, even at iso 3200, it wasn't visible. Only seemed to be visible at 1-3 stops underexposed with mixed hard lighting.

I purchased my camera from Henrys camera, in Canada, a full production model, so if their holding them back to fix the issue, they don't seem to be doing a very good job.

If anyone has any questions or things you'd like me to test with my retail model please reply here.

I should also add, that my banding isn't blue so much as a darker line. Black really but semi-transparent.

Can you clarify what you mean by different cinema modes? Do you mean film modes (aka color) or recording rates? (Aka 1080i, 720p, 24mbps)

In regards to the banding I get, I did try different film modes and each one exhibited the same problem. At this point, I'm pretty strongly convinced its a hardware or processing issue.
