GH2 GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

I have seen your clip and this coincides with my observations, I tried to follow all the rules, but my results are very similar. 25p on my 5D MkII is not so strobing.

Anyone else having this problem? Well, maybe not problem but irritation. Hopefully, Benn, and I have defective units. I'd like to hear from others that feel the same way and if they've found any answers.

watched the file.
i'm afraid this is the GH2 24p way of looking (or AF100 for that matter).
there are at least 2-3 other threads investigatin this, also in AF100 threads.
i must say, i also think it's mainly because of the crisp image (way sharper than 5D, that the only reason you are annoyed- anyone for a strobe comparison? :) )
i am also very bothered by it but i find most of my shots have a reasonable strobe.
i am also almost sure you'll have an exaggereted strobe ESPECIALLY when you pan on dark trees, with extreme white (snow) background and overblown (clipped) skies.
could someone back me up on this? i'm keeping a close eye on overexposing and highlights, so i might be getting less "hurting" strobe because of not clipping.

I can confirm that there is much less strobe (or none at all) with windows media player on 7 64bit, than with kmplayer (its unwatchable). I agree that dark trees (vertical lines) on a white background will intensify the impression of a strobe, but that doesn't explain why with wmp it isn't present will with kmplayer and apparently vlc it is.

why is that? it DOES explain that WMP is better for watching native MTS files.
i mean to say, it can play the file as it SHOULD be seen.
(as a proof - my projector shows the files with much less strobe that my PC with VLC. so indeed, WMP is closer to reality)
my best advice is to take this file and watch it on as much platforms as you can. different monitors, different computers, players, projectors, TV's etc..
you'll be amazed by the differences.

i dumped VLC over a year ago in favor of Splash Lite(free...there's a Pro version, but i havent tried it)...it'll play nearly anything you throw at it, and seems to really like the GH1, 13, 2 mts files. it also gives realtime bitrate info for those who like that sort of thing.

i compared Splash with WMP, and Splash still suffer from more strobe than WMP, so microsoft won this fight ;)

Well, I tested the camera with different settings and lenses for a few hours today. After reviewing all the footage I have determined that there is no way I can use this camera for my next film. I mean this particular camera, hopefully. I must assume that this camera is defective because the results are....well, pretty unpleasant. The strobe issues even show up in minor pans. I do hope there is something that I am overlooking but for right now this is my conclusion. I even broke out my canon XHA1 and did the same tests which turned out fine. There is something up with this camera. I would warn buyers to check it out before getting your heart set on this product. But do keep in mind that I could have a defective unit. I have always like Panasonic products and wanted to use the GH2 for my next film. This is a huge disappointment.

Sorry to hear of your predicament. Downloaded your clip and played it in VLC player. Also reconform the clip in Handbrake to mp4 for playing in QT. Both look equally bad. My feeling is that you have a defective unit. I haven't filmed anything that's exactly like your example, but I see absolutely no trace of this kind of issue in my GH2 footage - anywhere. Can you return it and get a replacement?

Either way, best of luck with your next project.

i'm almost sure that the panning trees test will look the same with other GH2 (or AF100 ;) )
can you upload some comparison test of your A1 vs GH2 on same movement ?
i also want to get to the bottom of this

Sorry Roei. I could go through posting footage and getting caught up in figuring out the issues but I just don't have time for that. I applaud your enthusiasm and appreciate your posts and concerns but I most move on and find a camera that works for me. I may be throwing in the towel a bit early but life, and movie making, must go on. Yeah it sucks and is a bit of a let down when these things happen. Time to spend my energy elsewhere. I just hope other people aren't having the same issue. If I ever get the chance to use a different GH2 or if it's fixed down the road with an update I'll give it another shot. Right now, this camera is not fit for prime time. Just my opinion and I do not wish to offend.

listen, i just tried to tweak my Nvidia card to customize 72Hz display, and your footage look GOOD !
when you pan slowly, there's no strobe ! when you get faster it start to strobe, but a lot better than before (that's indeed natural for 24p on different pan speeds)
and of course all MY footage now finally look as native 24p !

i guess 24p footage has to be played on a calibrated 48Hz/72Hz settings in order to be watched natively, otherwise you'll see a lot more strobe than usual. no idea how that fact helps with the canon comparison cause i never seen footage first hand, but now my mind is at peace :)

I believe there is something unconventional with the structure of the MTS files that come out of the GH2, that is why there is so much variance between using different players. Something Barry, Ian and others have always talked about ties directly into this.

Your workflow is critical, especially the first step of file conversion. That's why some editors can't do this properly as well.

Roei,

I've watched footage on my 60" plasma, my 50" LCD, and my 12 foot projection screen. None of it looks good. I can't shoot a movie and hope that everyone has a calibrated 48hz/72hz setup in order to see it properly but I'm glad it works for you.

Dazza,

A lot of the stuff I've been looking at is being played back directly off the camera. Shouldn't that look an playback fine? It does with all of my other cameras but I could be wrong. Yeah, it looks bad on my computer as well. I talked to a friend of mine who also has the camera and he's noticed the same issue. He intends to work around it. I'm not willing to do that since the footage actually makes me feel ill. I also don't think a decent distributor would take my film with it pulsating constantly.

I don't want to sound like a complainer. Good luck to everyone who buys the GH2. I would suggest you get your hands on one before you purchase it though. Take some time to really look at the footage. That's good advice with any camera anyway. In my opinion, there is something odd going on.

I think you should give it one more try:
As Dazza said, try to test an import or conversion to your
Editing software, it might solve it.

ingoandfloyd,

You're cameras does it too, huh? I got another email from someone last night who has the same problem. You know, I will probably borrow a Canon or Nikon until something new comes out. I'll use one of my Panasonic cameras with a Letus for outside use. Gotta go with what works.

Creative movie mode?

Creative movie mode?

Rigby,

I studied your first and second sample frame-to-frame, and both of them look similar, they have no motion blur. Are you sure you use "creative movie mode" to ensure that the frame rate really is 1/50 in your 2nd sample?
