GH2 GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

Looks like a high shutter speed.
Outside you really need ND filters on the lens so you can shoot
at 1/50 of a sec.
If you shot the same scene with any other camera at the
shutter speed you shot at it would look the same.

timo,

Thanks for looking at the files. I was in creative mode and you're correct when you say there seems to be no motion blur. Do you have a GH2? Are you getting better results?

HVXGuy,

The shutter speed was at 1/50. ( It said that in the post ) Also, it does not look like that with other cameras. ( It said that in the post ) Thanks anyway.

Not wanting to be defeated, I took the camera out again today. Same results. There is a definite pulsating thing going on. This is happening with others as well. I encourage anyone who owns the camera to do their own tests. I'm sending mine back and I just wanted other buyers to be aware of what my experience, and a few others, has been. Once again, I could have a bad camera or could be doing something wrong. Hopefully that's the case.

Rigby,

Yes, I have GH2, but I'm afraid I cannot share my experiences, since I do not use 24fps (I use 720p50). I checked again your 2nd sample, and I'm pretty sure that you do not have 1/50 exposure. My advice to you is that set the exposure to 1/25, shoot a pan, and verify that the motion blur is present.

timo,

Thanks. I'll try that. Though I did go down to 1/30. I appreciate your help and I'll look at it one more time.

timo,

I went down to 1/25 with the same results. Motion blur, with distant objects, is not present. When you're close to the camera it makes a difference. Like waving your hand back and forth. I am sure that I have been filming at 1/50. I even reset the entire camera and started from scratch. After talking to a fellow gh2 owner we've come to the conclusion that it is what it is. May be okay for some but not for others.

did you try to import the file to an editing software and exporting it to a different format?
and please try to shoot the same trees pan with a canon, so i could understand the differences...

Hi,
as he said, he DID use 1/50.. also with 1/40, i get the same strobe-
unless i watch the footage on a 72Hz or 48Hz calibrated monitor (most screens won't let you do that)
do you think that if you'll do this pan shot your footage will be less strobier ? do you have a sample of similar pan with different result?

I can't speak to your later clips, but I downloaded the first clip in this thread, converted to Cineform avi, and stepped through it frame by frame. It was clearly shot at an abnormally high shutter speed .... there is almost zero motion blur!

Since that shot is nowhere close to approximating a 180degree shutter (i.e. 1/48 or 1/50), the stobing effect I saw is exactly what I would expect for that kind of footage.

I have shot almost identical woodland scenes in recent weeks at 1/50 - they don't strobe and when examined frame by frame they look very different to your clip.

Grahamh, I'm with you. That's what I thought when I first started trying to figure out what was up. I've checked 50 times and the camera is at 1/50. I just don't get it and I wonder why others feel the same way. Bad batch of cameras? So, you have had success with panning shots like that? If you don't mind: could you give me a step by step guide to your settings? And, I mean treat me like a little kid. " Turn this knob with the picture of a camera on it" type guide. I've been using cameras, just about everyday, for years but that's not to say I can't be making a stupid mistake. Maybe others are as well. I would really appreciate it but I also understand it you don't have the time.

Stoneinpond, thanks for taking the time to look at the clips. Actually, thanks to everyone for looking into this.

Very simple: please upload the footage so we could all
compare it. that way Rigby will see if the strobe is different than his,
And I also want to see it first hand.. cause I'm sure my camera will strobe
The same as Rigby's.

Thanks :)

I went back through the GH2 setup that Ben did. That's what I've been doing so I can't see what's going wrong on my end. I do believe it's a shutter issue. I'm pretty sure I have a bad GH2 and I think others do as well. I got mine in DEC as did a friend of mine and we both have the same complaint. Don't know if that means anything.

i won't come to any conclusions until i see some comparison footage that i see for myself. all these facts doesn't add up to sound like a defective camera.
seriously- guys, if you have other footage with no strobe on THE SAME CONDITIONS please upload those pan samples that look perfect to your eyes, so i could examine them.
thanks.

You don't have trees in Israel?

I'm not going to mess around with this much more but one thing I noticed.... Any of you having this issue try moving the camera back and forth while looking through the evf. Scroll through the shutter speeds at the same time. My camera looks fine until I hit 1/50 and below. Suddenly it just looks like crap and strobes like crazy. Don't know what it means but maybe it means something. Anyway, I might call Panasonic if it's not a huge hassle to get through.

no only bombs and Arabs ;)

no, i meant that MY GH2 would give similar result as Rigby.
i want to see native samples from people who claim their GH2 or GH1 or canon will NOT strobe like that on same tree pan.

*rigby, it's exactly the same as my cam, when i change shutter speed. but at 1/60, doesn't it look TOO smooth??
(so why won't you use 1/60 :) )

Yeah, it does, but that's not right. Anyone else? I just talked to Panasonic and they said send it back. Keep in my that the girl I talked to had no clue as to what I was asking her. I do believe some of us have bad cameras.

Rigby, as a final test for every expert here to see, would it by any chance be possible for you to make:
short clips (5 sec each ?) of your nice tree pans or simialr view from your window, with all the 'weird' shutter speeds? (1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50. 1/60)
if it's too much for you i might be able to do shoot something.. but i don't i tripod or trees at my work, and i return home when it's dark.
(after all - YOU started this... ;) )
