GH13 with Canon FD/FL Lens Thread.

Im absolutely loving this thread! I went down to my local camera shop today and picked up a breech 50mm 1.4 that looks in great condition for $60, I havent gotten my gh1 yet so I dont know how it works but the shops got a 6 month warranty which sealed the deal for me.

Anyone had experience with the 70-214mm f4 macro? They have one for $125, what do you think about that price? I was checking photozone.de on it and they have much lower ratings for it than for the 80-200mm f4, but as much as everyone loves the 50mm f1.4 their ratings are mostly in the 80s. Can someone tell me a good price on the 80-200mm f4?

That price for 70-210 is way to expensive. You can get it for a lot cheaper than that on eBay. Of if you are interested, I'm selling one for $60 shipped :)

I tried my FD f1.2 55mm S.S.C. with FD adapter and picture was flawless. But I also got some hazing from light reflected from adapter when sun was in certain position (imaging circle is twice as big as m4/3 so strong sunlight will bounce from the adapter walls, I guess I need matte box)

The FD 55mm f/1.2s are just awesome - I can't believe how much lens you get there for the money! A mattebox is really helpful however, I use a Cinetactics Matteblox w/oversized flag - it's nice because I can take it wherever I go, it's light, easy to setup and you don't need rails or anything for it.

Very interesting thread. I went through my old camera bag and sure enough, I have an 50mm 1.8 FD plus a very slow zoom (100-200mm 5.6, guess it would be good in the bright AZ sun!). Before I go out and buy an adapter, have any of you had the chance yet to shoot on the 50mm 1.8? Would like to get some opinions on that lens, thanks.

It wasn't until I was about to hit the Buy It Now button that I remembered that 50mm FD lens I'd stashed in the closet back in '89...

My mistake is telling people who've had an old forgotten cache of legacy glass in their closet for decades that there's been a resurgence of interest and that they're worth something on eBay. As soon as I let that slip, their eyes roll up in their sockets and come back down with dollar signs like a cash register window in Tom and Jerry. I need to stop doing that.

Hey everyone,

This thread was really helpful in deciding to purchase some used FD glass. Thanks!

I just bought an 85mm fd f1.2 S.S.C Aspherical lens, and I should have it by the end of the day. I can't wait to take this guy out for a test run and give the 5d Mark 2's DOF a run for its money.

I'll be posting some test shots. Any suggestions, or tests that you guys would like me to run?

I have one of those as well. It's mildly interesting as very fast telephoto lens but it's a tad too long for video (with 2x m4/3 sensor). 55mm 1.2 is more usable as portrait lens but what we really need is fast wide-angle. This is the nirvana:

What camera functions are disabled with the use of retro lenses like the FD's? I dont really care for auto-anything, but i was starting to like the manual focus assist.

You might be mixing two different things up Chris... I agree the "automatic" focus assist when using m4/3 lens is annoying (it pops up everytime you just brush againts the focus wheel). I disabled that myself. But focus assist in general (when you need it) is very, very helpful (especially with 3rd party manual lenses).

Why did this thread stop moving? It's sooo interesting!!!

I'm in the market for some Canon FDs and thank you Matt for starting this thread:)

I think we kind of covered it all, no?

Old Canon FD and FL lenses can be mounted on GH1 and GF1 cameras with the right eBay adapters.

Aside from the FD50/1.8, they're all excellent for video, and even that one is pretty good.

The standouts are the 28/2.8, 35/2.0, and 50/1.4.

Best bang for the buck, 50/1.4.

Don't de-click old lenses, God will punish you.

Wear Depends the first time you shoot video with an adapted FD.

Okay, the well is capped. Thank you everybody, and good night.

i see your point Ian...but i won't change my opinion...maybe it's the magnified image on my LCD i don't like. that's all i'm saying.

You don't, at least when it comes to legacy Canon glass. The GH/F1's 2X crop factor doubles the effective focal length of the Canon manual lenses, so on an m43 camera that FD35 becomes a 70, the FD50 becomes a 100, etc. I guess you could hunt down an FD14 or an FD7.5 fisheye, but I think you might run into vignetting.

I would genuinely love someone to jump in and tell me I'm wrong, but I'm afraid you need to stick with native m43 glass if you want wide. I keep waiting for one of the alt.lens kids to discover some nutty post-war Russian c-mount that does credible wide with a cheap eBay adapter, but so far these kids aren't working hard enough for me.

Nice lenses... But what do you use for wides?!
