GH1 vs T2i

I think its pretty clear that the professionals are on board with canon. They have the choice of literally any cameras on the market and that is what they choose.

George Lucas
Robert Rodriguez
Ron Howard
the list keeps growing and growing, and they are all choosing Canon. I cant think of one instance that a professional known director has chosen a GH1 for anything.

So are you saying that all those people are wrong?

This is all conjecture at this point. You just cherry picked 3 recent stories where Canon cameras were used. Lucas hasn't even used it for anything yet. They're experimenting with the possibilities. Rodriguez was seen shooting a music video and Howard a cheap web sketch. How do you know any of these haven't used the GH1 or other cameras? You don't. How do you even know it was their decision to use DSLRs in the first place?

This "my camera is better than your camera" BS brand loyalty is tiresome. They all have their selling points. They all have their drawbacks. And all are suited better for different situations.

In the end, content is what matters. A true artist has the ability to create no matter what tools they're given. If one needs to feel validated by what others are using or needs the latest and greatest gear as a crutch for their shortcomings, then maybe they should look to another business.

While Lucas is doing something with the camera, and others on that list are as well, I actually don't believe the Gh1 has been brought o everyone's attention, since the net has pegged the Canon as the professional cam, and folks like Bloom have gone that route as well. I have both, use the Gh1 more, would probably use the 7D more on certain kinds of narrative work.

For folks shooting run and gun/casual sorts of things primarily geared for web or large plasma screen delivery, I do believe the GH1 is the better camera. They cut together pretty well. Looking forward to seeing some GH1 footage projected at SXSW, if I can make it, then maybe I'll know for sure, for my eyes, what the strengths and weaknesses of both are. (I've seen the 7D on a 2k projector and it's gorgeous.)

All of these filmmakers are using the 5D or the 7D. This discussion is about the GH1 and the T2i. I will remind you that the T2i is not only a different camera, but it is considered by Canon to be a consumer model.

By the same logic if a racecar driver was driving a Nissan Z it should make my Nissan Quest minivan just as good a choice for racing.

lol, the GH1 has been out FAR longer than the 7D, and already people are using it more. There has been no single article despite its long shelf life so far about the GH1, your saying that famous directors "MIGHT" be using it? Oh, but they must be doing it in secret, they dont want anyone to know right? Dude, stop being a panny apologist and smell the roses.

Im certainly no canon guy, ive been a nikon guy since before i was born literally (born into a nikon family), ive owned a few nikon dslrs and made lots of shorts and a documentary with a D90, but after looking into taking the next step, nikon never stepped up. As much as i hated to, i had to go to canon, and honestly panasonic was never an option in my mind (at least as far as the GH1 is concerned). Once the GH2 comes out, it will likely be on par with these cameras, but much like the D90, there are to many work arounds, etc... Can you still get beautiful footage from them? Of course, and in fact in some ways (like ergonomics), the are actually better than the canons (i really wish it had a GH1 style screen).

For a professional and narrative workflow the canons are simply the best option. Obviously an indie film maker can make their choice either way and still at the end of the day its going to come down to who is the better film maker (in other words they are close enough to where one isnt GLARINGLY better than the other).

But to laugh in the face of some of the top names in the business is simply the same kind of mindless brand loyalty that your speaking of.

I have no ties to canon or any other brand, i go with what works the best. Ill sell my 7D tommorow and buy something else if it comes out and is largely better and still in my price range.

Oh and the T2i is mentioned because it has the same exact video quality as the 7D.

There's enough info on the web and enough video samples to make an informed decision. I think at the end of the day, you should just check them out in person, handle them, and pull the trigger on one. Paralysis of analysis and all that.

I'm far from a Panasonic apologist. I've never owned a Panasonic camera. In fact, I recently sold my EX1 and am buying a 7D soon. I haven't been following any or the news or rumors on the GH2, but I would expect it to be more than just "on par" with the current Canon lineup when it's released.

And my apologies if you didn't intend it to, but your post read like so many of the others on here making subjective claims as to why their camera of choice is better. The DSLR video market is very exciting right now and it will only get better. It is cool to see some of these bigger names in the industry involved with DSLR production, but everything I said is true. I certainly didn't laugh in their face. The point is no one really knows the circumstances behind the use of the 7D in the Rodriguez and Howard productions. And as stated before, Lucas is interested in the technology but has made no official plans to use it. So to claim that as a victory for Canon is premature.

As much as I liked the GH1 and am not really on board with JonE5, I must say handsome pete that George Lucas is using the technology.

I think that's an important distinction from what your saying...yes they did some tests, but they've moved out of testing mode and are using the Canon's on a feature film. (Not for the whole thing of course.)

And this is amazing news for the HDSLR movement as a whole.

I'm trying to get it together last minute to go to SXSW, and I think those that do make it are going to be very excited by the Barry Green/JDS short going to be screened there, shot on the GH1.

I want to see how different and how similar it is to Bloom's work that I saw projected this past weekend, then in my own head, at least, I'll know exactly when to use my GH1, and exactly when to use my 7D.

My bad if that's the case. I was still under the impression that they hadn't done anything with them yet, and just tested them to see if they were an option.

You guys debate on importance on what celebs (to us) use the Canon 7D/5D or whatever (not the t2i)... We really dont know if its based on personal preference, personal needs or personal gain...

Jay Leno talks up and demos the hybrid on his show all the time, but doubt you will actually see him driving it around.

The following remark makes the most sense, which is what I have done. There are FACTs that lead me to the GH1 for now, not subjective opinions of quality and celeb support.
