GH1 vs T2i

So I want a video DSLR but I don't know if it will be better a GH1 or a T2i

I know the T2i is cheaper than the GH1 but the lens kit on the GH1 look better

I have a GH1.
Its a great cam and the usefullness of the articulating screen cannot be understated, however there are two issues that would have led me to the T2i if it existed:
1. Availability of fast lenses - the GH1 kit lens is nice, for sure, but at f4.0-5.6 it's not exactly fast. The used lens market is so robust with Canon that this alone would nudge me towards the T2i.
2. Crop factor - its hard to get wide shots with the GH1 due to crop factor. I prefer wide to long so this is a particular issue to me.

The GH1 is better in 2 ways, but they are less inmportant to me:
1. Articulating lcd
2. Autofocus - it works REALLY well with the kit lens. But, there are very few lenses it works with.

Fast lenses are plentiful for the GH1, because it can take every lens made for Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Leica, c-mount, you name it... any lens can be adapted to a GH1.

They're quite different products, aimed at different users. Go to the articles section and read my comparison article of the GH1 vs. the 7D; for video purposes the 7D and t2i are very comparable so the article should still hold. After that, you should have a clearer idea of which product is more suitable for your purposes.

I knew this was coming.

You're right but you have to go with another manufacturer.... why not go with Canon which has plenty of lenses made by the same manufacturer?
Additionally you need to get an adapter - extra $.
And, if you really want, you can get an adpater to mount Nikon lenses on a Canon.. so that factor is pretty much a draw.

PLUS - you lose the autofocus capabilities which is one of the two benefits of the GH1, so the only thing in the GH1 favor is the articulating screen.

PLUS PLUS - sure you can get fast lenses but due to the crop they aren't very wide.

Three other things I didn't put in the Canon column:
1. Better low light capabilities (we've all seen the strange lines that occur above ISO400 on the GH1)
2. Better codec.
3. Third party support - in third party lenses and all products there is far more made for Canon than Panasonic.

Really I can't see why anyone would go with the GH1 at this point. Given the 7D vs GH1 cost it made sense... but with the T2i I just don't see it.

The main disadvantage with the GH1 for me is on the wide angle end of lens availability. You essentially have one lens you can buy -- the Lumix 7-14 and that's over $1,000 and is a slow F4. The Canon T21 could use the Tokina 11-16 2.8, which is a bargain at $600. If you're a wide shooter -- and let's face it, sooner or later we all need the wide shot -- the Canon's seem to be the only game in town. It's too bad because I like the GH1's articulating viewfinder and its more video-centric controls and features. I'm going to wait out my DSLR purchase until my next big job because surely better and possibly cheaper cameras will be out soon. Hopefully a Nikon full frame in the D700 form factor.

Sure, the Tokina could be adapted but then it's really a 22-32mm lens (35mm full frame equivalent) on M43.

But on the Canon, that Tokina is a 17.6-25.6mm lens (35mm full frame equivalent). The extra 4+mm on the wide end is HUUUGGE if you like to shoot wide.

Well wide wont be good for gh1 anyway or youll get mud. But for me, 24 is wide enough. Anything wider is gravy

obtw gh1 should be slightly wider due to the diff ways the sensor in 16x9. Cud be 20-21 mm

how much are the adapters?

Barry when people say there's no fast lenses for the GH1 - they mean FAST ZOOMS WITH IS - which is true - the GH1 is TOTALLY VOID -

Canon you can have a 70-200mm 2.8 IS - you can't get that on the GH1, just a kit lens two stops slower on a body that's at least a stop slower ISO wise.

You can adapt primes sure, but again, no IS, and no 85mm 1.2, which is worth maxing out a credit line for.

Exactly... and also not only that but if you put the Tokina on the Canon you get a nice wide auto focusing lens for stills.
On the GH1 it's completely 'dumb'.

Before the T2i the GH1 made a lot of sense. Now it doesn't.

The slow zoom problem seems to cut across brands. There are all kinds of 3.3-5.6 variable zoom lenses out there regardless of brand. That's fine. We don't all want to carry big, honking 2.8 zooms like either Canon or Nikon's 24-70. But it would be nice to have a couple of tiny primes that were F2 or even F2.8. It's clear that the success of the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens means that people value small, light, and fast lenses.

My Tamron 17-50 F2.8 is about the same size as the GH1 14-140.
I certainly wouldn't call that "honking" big.

+1 on GH1... sold a t1i for it. No one mentioned the 10-12 minute record times on canon? eh. To me the GH1 is a better video camera than the whole canon lineup (at least up to 5d)....

Reasons why GH1 rocks:

Auto focus

no record time limits

kit lens is far better than anything "kit" from canon

Only grey aliasing, not bright green/orange

Articulating LCD

Only wish: HDMI out while recording...

Except the one reason why the T2i and all the other Canon pro Dslrs are better is due to better compression. GH1 is a great camera but we need to be realistic here and realize that the T2i is a better one.

Canon with all of it's lens options that fit natural and still allow Auto Focus and IS is simply the winner here. Barry needs to make another right up, because I have used both cameras and the T2i is just better overall. You have used an Hmc-150 and now GH1, when you get to finally use a T2i then you will understand.

'Better Compression' - pretty broad statement there... and did you say pro dslrs? t2i is a pro dslr? lol

Show me better compression at 720/60p... That's what I shoot the most.

Please don't assume you know what I have shot... especially basing it on what I own... I own what I found is the best for me. If I thought a 5d/7d/t2i were better, id own it instead.

You did finally make sense with the barry should to do another write up... Charts and side by side time!

Pfffttttt....WHAAAT......EVER!!! I don't care what the rest of ya'll say...MY camera is better than yours. :)

...they just have not made it yet....but I swear...when they do make it.... it'll probably be obsolete before i could even afford it.

Its not like that... each camera has its strengths, and right now the GH1 offers more things I need :)

Coming from 10 years of canon's.... I do shed a tear once in a while supporting panny so much :embarasse

Yes it is pro and yes it has better compression. Now if you shoot live video at 720/60 and have found that works best for you then fine. The T2i just came out less than 2 weeks and judging by your post the GH1 was/is your first dslr you worked with as you come from standard cameras.

I owned several dslrs including the Gh1 and my opinion is I like the T2i better & factual statement is it has better compression and looks better online which I mostly post my work.
