GH1 vertical and horizontal line artifacts

Apparently. I get vertical banding when I severely underexpose my shot..i.e. I shoot weddings and I'm using the slow kit lens during the ceremony...and not using any lights...and it's super dark in the venue. This is NOT a good wedding ceremony camera. But at the reception, I slap on the 20mm f1.7 and a Switronix TL50 LED on-cam light (which I use VERY RARELY and at the lowest settings), and the footage blows me away. It's an awesome wedding reception combo...and no banding in the darkest shots.

this is not a very good kit lens for wedding ceremony. it's not the camera.

no, but you should maybe consider another option on what lens you use at the ceremony ;)

That's whay I'm asking for...suggestions. :D

I've had to shoot a couple small venues with the 20mm f1.7 and a 50mm f1.8 OM lens...and that's a PITA when shooting alone....no zoom....all manual...no wide....and 50mm won't cut it in most churches. On a GH1 you need something like 250-350mm on the long end, and 14mm on the wide end, and over twice as fast as the kit lens, to make it as practical as a regular video camera.

But, I'm having fun making it work...it's becoming a lot of fun shooting weddings with the tiny GH1. I ain't going back to a regular video camera. I just quit booking as many church weddings...I charge brides more for them to cut back. lol

I called Panasonic, and they did not even know about this known issue. I don't understand how not since I am not the only one having this problem. It took them 2 weeks to respond my email, nut it was no help either. I called them and they said would call me back but they never did. I had to call back again and the person I spoke to said that they did not know what I was talking about, that no one had reported this issue. Vertical lines should not be a problem at all, even at low ISO's, the camera should only have grain not vertical lines so I am done with it. I sent it back and now I am using a Canon 7D.

Problem with verical crap solved!

Problem with verical crap solved!

Hi man, at first sorry for my english.
I have solved (particulary) the problem just now. Everythink depend on mod of shoot. If you use P,M,S, etc. Video use AUTOMATIC ISO correction!!!
If you choose Movie mod, you may set ISO and other stuf. Is it clear?
For reclaim best video with low light conditions it's not magic thinks, only you bay better lens with low F and set ISO on 100 max 200.
Edit: Its is true, but only for AVCHD and in some case is better get high ISO.You get some noise but not vertical artefacts:( .

My GH1 had awful banding. I got another one and is is almost free of this problem. I am convinced it is a sensor problem. There are different GH1's around. Panasonic sells some bad camera's hoping it will go unnoticed. I am sorry to say.

I shoot weddings with two GH1's and camera operators.

In order to avoid the banding issue one must use fast lenses, the good thing here is that if you take your time on ebay, you'll get really good deals. I own the following lenses:

- Nkon 55mm f/1.4 (paid $50 dollars used)
- Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 (paid $270 dollars new) http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-Asphe...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1279068863&sr=1-11
- And I recently got a Tokina 80-200 f/2.8 zoom lens to use it during the ceremony for $200 dollars used on ebay.

We use the prime lenses and zoom tokina lens on one camera and the kit lens and pan 20mm 1.7 lens on the other one, where we need the autofocus for the steadicam shots.

I hope this lens selection helps people out there, I took me a while to read a lot of reviews and find this set of fast lenses.

Not yet, I'll upload some soon. check this one in the meantime:

The Rokinon 85mm 1.4 optics quality is very very close to nikon's quality. Basically you are purchasing only the glass and no autofocus motors or cpu's that makes the lens a lot expensive.

I purchased both GH1 from B&H photo as used items a bout three months ago, so I don't really know how old are they, is there a way to check with the serial number?

some good work, let me tell this, on my older (first release -aug 2009 patch) gh1 , with a 50mm 1.4 at iso higher iso (even if im exposed correct or maybe a little underexposed) the banding is much worse than on the newer one, like yours ..I think, many owners of older gh1's have this issue...

Oh no, I didn't shoot that video, I just found it on vimeo, but it is the same lens and I can assure you that the lens copy I own produces the same optics quality. Yeah, I've read that everywhere, the first GH1 owners report very harsh banding

Hah - I was going to say.... it seemed to show (to my untutored eye) some pretty intuitive and skilful film making! You should have tried to take the credit :cheesy:

I only bought my GH1 (red) 2 months ago and it is banding like crazy at low light so not sure about this old vs new sensor stuff.

Maybe it is Japanese versus Chinese. I read, that Panasonic opened new factory in Japan. Maybe chipsets from that factory are superior.

It could be nice, if people shared their serial number(first 4 digits) and describe the level of banding they are experiencing.

Mine is WE0LA001004 and has terrible binding problems Its's both vertical and horizontal sort of rgb noise net :/ I'm using Minotla Rokkor PF 55mm 1.7 Lens and an Olympus M. Zuiko 14-42mm, 3.5-56 II MSC logically Minolta has less of that visible but Olympus is a bit noisy as in general... As for acutations mine has about 18K... This sort of noise+binding appears rather logically at lower Shutter speeds and also mine is hacked with LPowell: Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch v2 setting and quite honestly I think that hacking might've introduced the binding or at leaset incresed it :/ specially after seeing this video https://vimeo.com/24642360 - if you pause at 1:23 you'll see what I mean and that sort of binding is very close to mine... I think moving to Nikon d5200 although I'm not keen to that idea but after browsing the web everyone states that d5200 is better than GH2 despite the fact that on 5200 you cannot control aperture and etc. in live view
