GH1 Shipping Today! According to Panasonic Sales Rep

Really the only way to get one right now is to watch the Panasonic site like a hawk and try to slip an order in whenever they go "in stock". My prediction is, even though the web site says backordered until September, they'll get small batches in, ignore the pre-order people like they have before, and just put them online for sale for an hour or two. That's what happened on June 17 and I snagged one while it showed "in stock" for an hour. Got it a day and a half later.

In addition, you can keep checking the half dozen sites who are expecting stock. I've made a list and here are the pages I always check. I don't want a second camera: I've just been checking a few times a day for the benefit of the group here. Anyway, here are the places I check:

Panasonic
Adorama
J&R
Amazon
Norman Camera
Vann's
B&H

Good luck.

Mike

MikeyDVX is right, This is basically how I got through this mess of a system. I would check Pannydirect, JR, B&H, and Henry's a LOT through the day. Low and behold, B&H showed "IN-stock" for a moment in time, I just happened to be there to snag one.

I picked it up last night from UPS, (wasn't home to sign for it). None the less, very excited to test.

I too have kept my links on my desktop, and have been checking them periodically through the day- as soon as I see any action, I will post, and PM as many guys as I can like before. We all can't be looking at the same sites, simultaneously, so the more eyes we can have spread out over this network, the better chances of getting someone a GH1.

best of luck guys-cheers

Z

For anyone that cares:beer:, my order finally did move to the UPS tracker as In-Transit. It supposedly shipped out at 9:30 am, and no status change til 9PM! At that point, the timestamp put on the first scan was 1 pm. Confusing, but I know it's a real shipment now - delivery for tomorrow. Continued luck to the rest of you.

I am canceling a Panny Direct order this morning (one up the list for some of you!), and one at Mostly Digital as well - People still stuck may want to try there, as they have 6 on order (to Panny) and only 3 (2 after my cancel) on customer order, according to their site. They are in Canada - 1849 CAD, careful of VAT and warranty issues.

Bill

Sorry, not sure what you mean exactly - May 5-Jun 24; 30 days? Anyway, mine changed to Shipped early afternoon today...final confirmation for me is when UPS changes from "Billing Info" to a true tracking status (when the shipment is in their hands). Hopefully see that later today.

I did get an email saying it's been xx days - "should we cancel this order" - I simply responded that they should keep it going, and that's what happened. Hope that helps...

Bill

Canceled Panny direct order last night. Will cancel Henry's when camera arrives. Definite one up list for those with orders at Henrys (I was third.)

Order from Mike's in colorado has officially shipped...from CO to Kentucky...and then over to me in CA by friday (probably.)

guess I missed my opportunity with B&H as well... Man my luck is bad on this one.

- monday called and the operator asked if I wanted to pre-order. I declined since I have three floaters.

-today called and the operator saz "we don't do pre-orders. it's not fair to the public"

interesting. :nads:

Well it's the 15th and no sign of GH1 coming from JR. This is it, we probably won't get it until end of the year without trying.

So, none of you gals and fellas have gotten from JandR, huh? Thought they had a hotter hotline than BandH. I vow to never shop anywhere with initials again! That includes you A and W Rootbeer, and you too, H and M, even PC richard.

I still have my order in with Panasonic Direct and called today to check on it. They are calling me back with status and said that some are "trickling" in. Also she said my order was some time ago so there should be some status on it by now.

So I may have one up for sale unless they call me back and tell me the camera is not coming for a while... in which case I will probably cancel the order.

I haven't preordered or anything yet, but I would love to have a GH1 by early September. What do you guys think are the chances of that happening, and what's my best course of action at this point?

I'm a 3D TD at work and decided I'm tired of refreshing B&H. Although it really ends up hurting my chances, I made a python script for everyone else in the same situation.

Just copy this...
Code:
import httplib,time,sys

conn = httplib.HTTPConnection('www.bhphotovideo.com')

inStock = False
while not inStock:
    print "Checking stock...",
    conn.request("GET","/c/product/608940-REG/Panasonic_DMC_GH1K_Lumix_DMC_GH1_Digital_Camera.html")
    req = conn.getresponse()
    response = req.read()
    try:
        inStock = response.split('class="value inStock"')[1].split(">")[1].split("<")[0]

        if inStock:
            while True:
                print "OH NOES B&H in STOCK!"
                time.sleep(1)
    except IndexError, e:
        print "Backordered"
    time.sleep(60)
into a file names something like 'bh_gh1_alert.py' and if you have python 2.5+ (linux and mac people should have it by default) then you can nerd out your frustration via console app!

It runs every minute and checks the gh1 page for a css class used by the site for styling the 'in stock' items for that page... If it doesn't have it it bails and will try again. If it see the correct tags it will flood you console window.

He he he, LOL!

I pity the poor souls in Panasonic's marketing & distribution channel.

Whom did you speak with?

Whats the back story on why this camera is so scarce? I thought panasonic said early June for the US and it already released overseas?

When I inquired to Adorama about a possible ETA for the camera, Scott, one of their "online" customer service reps emailed back this response:

"Hi,

This is a brand new item... and never released as yet. So no, there is no official ETA as yet. Keep the faith.

Thank you for shopping with us we appreciate your business."

I mean, WTH? Keep the faith?? It's almost insulting. I'm thinking the samsung nx10 will arrive en masse before the gh1 does at this point.

I cancelled my Panny order. Did not even bother to ask about status, it's useless. Even though I made no comment the lady was sorry about the delays. I will leave my Amazon order open but it is about to expire automatically I think. If that occurs this customer that Panny was going to earn (first time buyer of any Panasonic product) is now lost... forever. With all this money I am buying a great Canon or Nikon with a nice piece of glass and a flip HD and iPhone will solve my video needs which is all for web.

The woman I spoke with at Panasonic was Jolene... she is supposed to give me a call back today.

She said she was going to send out a couple emails to find out what is going on.
