GH1 Shipping Today! According to Panasonic Sales Rep

I can't even place order from Panasonic Direct now, the page says back ordered till Sep 09 and add to cart button is removed :crybaby:

OMG....WTF is up? Japan has being selling these units since April!

I just checked: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-...eras/model.DMC-GH1K_11002_7000000000000005702

What if they don't deliver to any of us for over two months?

Something is definitely is going on now.........!

This is high strangeness; I'm calling George Noory! :-D

.

What if...

They are delaying the shipments so they can install the battery crippling firmware so that no battery except Panasonic can be used?

If you figure the extra battery cost it's probably close to a $70 gain on each battery. Why win just 200-300 on the sale of the camera when you can get a lot more for very little effort!

I think it is far more likely that Panasonic SERIOUSLY underestimated interest in the camera, didn't provide enough factory time for production and is now so far behind on pre-orders that they stopped taking orders ... either they piss of more people trying to order with more unrealistic delivery expectations or they set the expectation at "not available"... while they deal with the distribution nightmare they created. Hopefully that means that those with pre-orders will start seeing cameras arriving in batches over the coming weeks.

Not that I am defending them, I had the worst customer service experience in a long long long time with them, but I think that is the result of incompetence and corporate bureaucracy more than an plot to take advantage of every last consumer.

If you can commit the icons in camera menus to memory and do a little research AND are in a hurry then perhaps GH1s straight from here (Japan) is an option worth considering. I admit it is not as ideal as having the English menus and reselling in your English speaking country ONCE distribution has normalized may prove a lot more difficult but it is definitely workable even if you can't read Japanese...either that or, like Kholi said, PAL...just not from Australia with the ridiculous mark up. Hong Kong seems more desirable.

Edit: Also Kholi, I clicked on that link in your sig...my eyes saw "seeds" my heart saw "speeds"...thought it was a lens directory or something!

LOL. Nah no Superspeeds! Just narcotics.

I think the ONLY reason not to go Pal or JP right now is resale value in the US. Otherwise, waiting until September? Nah.

The menus are easy to understand and once you do things a few times you can pop through them without even thinking. Literally, once the camera is setup you generally only roll through to format the card anyway.

Hang in there, i just got an email from Pana Direct saying my order shipped and credit card charged. Only thing is, no tracking number was given and says expected delivery July 13th. But i payed for overnight, so... not sure on that one. Either way, clearly nobody has any real idea what the situation is, but if your in line, best to stay put.

That just happened to someone else yesterday or the day before. Their card was refunded because it was inaccurate.

Shouldn't Panasonic release some info on the reason for the delays by now? Seems like that would be good practice. I'm finding it harder and harder to wait on this with no explanation.

Ahem. Abel Cinetech. Short line. Like a bunch o' cluckin hens in here with your 5 orders at 4 different places, paying interest on cards for cameras you'll have to resell! Shipment is supposed to be before the 20th. Bone thrown.

Let us know when you get yours.

No where charges the cards until product ships and you can cancel order at anytime and a lot of places let you return unopened product for full refund.

Yep that was me :violin:

7/1 Charged , 7/2 told by sh**tron shipping info would be sent asap, nothing....... 7/7 was told my account would be refunded and eta is September.

I raised holy hell with sh**tron. Their solution? "would you like to cancel your order sir" .... I'm like: "is that some sort of veiled threat?" .... "wait or cancel those are your options sir" :furious3:

YEP! Your right! Just sucks when everyone receives stock on the same day and thusly ships it to you that day. Also, those brazen returns f*ck with the stock expectancy and replenishment numbers. A lot get returned and fewer will be ordered for the next stock cycle. But thanks for bolstering the refurb market. In my opinion, this screws things up for everyone else and is generally just compulsive behavior and childishness.... Just like hovering over a forum and gushing over a gizmo (me).

Another confused GH1 squatter here. I pre-ordered from henry's late june and was told I was next in line for a late july shipment. Vistek had told me august 31st was their next scheduled arrival, but also said that it could come sooner.

Now with the buzz of a september backlog, I'm not sure who to believe. I've been reading this thread since mid june and hoped it wouldn't last. But I've found myself looking for alternatives to the gh1. Am I the only one whose started to think this way? Or is everybody pretty comfortable just waiting it out? I ask because this is the first time I've seen a camera's demand shadow its supply in such a way. Is this normal practice in the camera retail community?
