GH1 sample footy and pricing

I did actually see a 5D clip a couple of days ago that had been converted to 24p in twixtor that looked pretty good, but the colors weren't as warm as the D90 stuff. I've managed to lose the url.

people aren't just using the D90 because it's cheap and small....they're using it because it looks good.

The clips on EXes and 5DM2s all seem to have very distinct color configurations. It would be enlightening to see them matched either in advance or in post.

Many have converted 5D clips to 24p, and they seem to look fine.

In the US, you can get into lots of trouble filming, especially for commercial use, without permission. Lots of trouble.

Every well produced clip i've seen from the D90 looks great (i.e. lighting, dolly, proper hand held rig, etc), likewise for the 5d mk II. The whole waiting for the next cam thing is like deja vu...

I am waiting for the one after next, that's definitely going to be the one.

All these oversampled cameras with good glass and high bandwidth/low loss recording are going to make many more demands on the cinematographer to get it right.

My rule of them is the camera should be no more than 20% of the equipment budget. That would include 35mm adapter and lenses, but not legs, filters, etc.

hehe, always is

I am the D90. I overheat quickly, I have no manual control, I'm a bit soft, and after a few beers.....much skew and jello. My kids are the new improved model...well here's hoping.

Bah, the D90 is capable of great looking footage people, stop hating on it just because it has some quirks, many of which are now fixable in post. So far the only thing the 5D Mark II has on it is resolution and full frame, otherwise they have similar image characteristics and similar setup quirks.

As I've said before, the GH1 is probably going to be pretty cool but I can already forsee some opting for a 5D Mark II for the sake of full frame. The D90 can still draw some users in as well because of its straight up filmic look (let's face it, it is the DVX of VDSLR's). Lens choices factor in too because you won't exactly be able to use, say, the Nikon 18-200mm 3.5 DX lens on the GH1, that is until someone develops an electronic conversion mount or comes up with a Long Valley Equipment-esque Nikon mount for the GH1 to use electronic lenses manually. You'll also have to factor in the lens magnification too if you try to use your Nikon primes on it. I don't care all that much myself, but some people are downright passionate about that.

As far as price goes, I'm happy with that. The GH1 is at a good price medium between the D90 and 5D Mark II. I wish it would come out sooner though as I have the shooting dates for my big project for this semester going on from April 5-12th and I certainly could use some manual controls and maybe that 7mm lens option. Oh well, at least I'll have an excuse to get one of those Tokina 11-16 zooms in the meantime I suppose.

The differences (including those ones you've mentioned) are a way more than what you're saying. The codec and bitrate just for beginning.

That 7mm zoom is way slow. The Tokina 11-16 will probably be a better medium for wides, even though you miss out on about 4mm of real estate.

John, we know you don't like the D90. It's okay, man. You may want to channel that energy into something a bit more productive. Only a thought.

Can we drop the name VDSLR, it might become contagious. I really don't want to rock up to a shoot with a "VDSLR". Maybe DFSLR would be more appropriate.

It's a love hate relationship with the D90.

The 5D will be obsolete very soon I suspect.

Like enlightening people on the fact

Yeah i guess it is a fact that you didn't manage to get good results out of it but where did you get the idea that there was anything productive about that or that we needed enlightment in that respect? I'm very open with the limitations of the camera and so is everybody else here with significant experience (unlike you) so there's plenty of info for anyone to create their own opinion. I guess ultimately its a matter of whether people should listen to the aspiring event videographer or the professional feature filmmaker. A tough call indeed. :-) /matt

how is it that some folks can get fascinating shots with the D90 and others are just ordinary? That first clip "Henkell-clip (Long-Version)" looked great and so was the music video. Not that the others looked bad...it's just I'm suprised by the variance in quality. Maybe it's just me.
