GH1 sample footy and pricing

David you seem to want to analyze the sh*t out of stuff, but is Joe Popcorn going to look at the screen and say "ohh duuude, did you see those chroma artifacts, that just ruined the whole movie for me!" am i wrong or is the majority of the guys who're on here looking to make indie films with these camera's and not commercial work?

It's cool to analyze like this. Correct Joe popcorn doesn't care or notice.

However we are not joe popcorns here. DP's, Engineers, directors etc do break down this stuff, cause it's the tools of our occupation. No different than a nero surgeon looks at his tools. I have dealt with a half a dozen of the best Nero surgeons in the USA and these guys are very technical... So the same goes for us, in our occupation or any occupation for that matter. If you care about your work, and care about everything related to it. Then you study every part to the smallest level, to know our tools in and out so we know how to get the best out of them. As well avoid the surprises of something negative in the future..

The big company's would love for us to be so accepting and not analyze; if that was the way we were, so complacent like sheep, just imagine the crap that these companies would supply us. We keep the bar up, not the companies. If we ever slack on that, they'll gives us even worse performance. I for one will never just sit back and accept, I can't and I won't!

So analyze away, it's a good thing............

when we see video, especially short videos (commercials, YouTube, etc) we are drawn in my good production quality in video and sound.
you're referring to yourself and your lice i take it? ;-) when i see "professional video" i feel nauseous. if it contains crisp images of kids, animals or detergent i'm gonna puke for sure. shoot film or make it trashy if you want my patronage, to put it bluntly.

There are a few trade-offs. Since we are comparing H.264 High Profile@Level 4.1 we can use the compression ratio as a rough indicator. These all use DCT which favors correlated values with similar spatial frequencies.

Update: I forgot to highlight 25Mb/s at the top row...the HMC150.

Can you explain your chart. I can assume, however you know the phrase...

What's the base point that all this data is being compared to? or what codec?

It should be better than the HV20 by far. The sensor ( pixels too ) are way bigger than the HV20. Now that said, I have HDMI captured straight from the HV20 and if you bypass that crappy HDV codec, then the HV20 is quite nice for a 3MP HD-camera. It's the low bit rate codecs and such on the HV20 and cameras alike that ruin all this.

Here is a guide . . . .

The GH1 has more than 10 times to sensor area (!)

i'm joe popcorn and wanna be filmmaker. i care for good lighting, good acting and good direction. not necessarily in that order. sounds plays a major second and then the quality of video. even as a wanna be filmmaker i don't strive for the best possible picture. i for one can't stand a movie/short with no dialogue. it can have all the pretty bitrate and eyecandy it wants, but to me, it comes down to how well your acting and story is. that's why crank 2 will still suck. reason why fox sucks as a studio.

First, where I live we have lots of clean running water...I shower often...no lice. :)

Second, if you professional video makes you ill, do you purge when viewing your own website?

Lighting is part of the quality of the video. It certainly doesn't affect the sound or acting, unless your actors are scared of the dark.

Actually, I would go for good script first, good direction second, good acting third, good editing fourth, good sound, then good video. We just spend are time contemplating the most insignificant things!

Hey I'm Joe popcorn.....I don't notice anything because I'm too busy trying to get in my GF's pants. 90 minutes of darkness that's all that matters.....and popcorn.

My first D90 clip is full of kids.....can't wait to see what Matt has to say

If you don't care how professional your camera is then don't start complaining about codec, bit rates, lens speed, blah, blah, blah because the discussion looses all its value. You don't need a Genesis, Viper, Varicam or a Red One to produce a good movie but you do need a solid camera that performs top of the line. Thanks God and the manufacturers that that quality is affordable to many of us that do professional stuff and would have been out of the game some years ago. I say professional because I consider myself a professional and proud of it. I love my job but at the same time it pays my bills. The HV20 and company are good enough maybe for the price, that's all. If you are hoping to hit that fastball harder you need a bigger bat.

Totally agree, and those who know me , know story/casting/performance etc will always come first, over anything. However this is not a story forum. This is a DSLR forum that discusses cameras, cameras, cameras; specifically the D90. Yet it has been hijacked to be an over all DSLR or now non DSLR which the GH1 is. The Mirror is gone ( hence deletion of the "reflex " ) so I guess it's become a generic phrase now.

It's technical forums like this one, we get technical. That's why J. Land created a list of filmmaking forums for Screenplay/Writing/directing etc under "filmmaking" on DVXusers front page. There we can geek out all over story, writing, cinematography, lighting etc.

It's like race car driving forums. There are one's for mechanical discussion. Then there are ones for racing technique discussion. This forum would be the mechanical equivalent, just it's about DSLR's..

Anyway right now for indie filmmaking the GH1 appears on spec to be top dog so I think I'll take the plunge come end of may with an olympus lens that costs more than the bloody camera.

Watch Nikon bring out something better a week later. Techno slave joy

Amen to that sir........

Funny her pants were already off the last time I saw her..... :-)

.
Just kidding!

There is no way I'm spending 20bux on tix to try and get in my gf's pants. I'm watching that movie man.

Think NetFlix man.

Then you can enjoy the girl all you want............. Without late fee's, referring to the DVD. ;-/

hehe her pants are always off

I spose I should be on the script forum seeing as a GH1 is completely useless until I finish mine.
