Gh1 Patch for low light handheld gig

Hi I've been using the 75mbps peak performance patch for a couple of weddings and I've had no problems for the most part except when I film at the gig/disco at the end of the night. I usually film this part handheld with a simple handle attached to the bottom of the camera so I can move around freely. However footage is quite muddy in the blacks and it tended to fail a lot if I filmed too near the disco lights used by the band.

I'm filming a gig for a friend's band as a favour tomorrow and I was wondering what might be the best patch for the job?

At the moment I've decided to use the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch just to be on the safe side.

I'm using sandisk extreme pro 45mbps sdhc cards

I live in PAL land so 25/50 fps all the way :-)

I've pretty much put LPowells 100mb Max Lat hack and forgot about it. I think that's as good as it gets because the biggest problem with low light is Hardware not software.

I'd shoot at night to overexpose the image a bit at as high an ISO as looks decent. Even if it doesn't look decent, you can then darken it in post a bit and that will hide some of the noise. Add a little denoise and it will look even better.

Another thing is to set the max iso limit on shoot 3200 iso in Smooth B&W. That will give you as good a low light image as you can get. It will still be a touch noisy, but way better than color at 3200 iso.

If you want to shoot low light and low iso then go for MJPEG. Low light and Low iso MJPEG blacks look the best imho, but if you go low light and high iso, AVCHD has less noise.

That's good to know. The only thing is I'm afraid of the camera stopping recording at any stage. With the 75mbps patch as I said when I was in a similar environment It stopped and started quite a bit :-(

I've done some extreme testing and EVERY patch I've tried has failed under the most extreme settings...only stock firmware didn't fail. So the way I look at it, all are equally reliable. If you're really worried...stock firmware at 720p would probably be the best bet. Load stock firmware and just remove time limit and max iso. That shouldn't fail and it will give you a slo-mo option.

75 peak is my standard patch too. but on the rare occasion it fails, i just switch down to 720p. not that i want to lose the extra resolution, but better to get the shot than not.

the problem is not low light, the problem is strobing party/DJ lights that crash the camera. the same as any highly detailed bright outdoor scene. it is all the tiny points of extreme contrast in the image that cause a hack to choke. you'll probably need to load the reliable patch but without native 24p just for those night time dance scenes. i've found the native patch setting to be more prone to crashing.

The Native 24p patch has always been more prone to crashes, which is why the Blackout-Powell patch was designed.

well i ended up using the reliable in camera playback patch and it didn't crash once, glad I used it. Will put the video up when the band decide what songs they want to use
